Trump’s Abandonment of Pro-Lifers Is Complete

Over the course of the campaign, as he’s internalized the idea that opposition to abortion is a drag on Republicans, President Trump has been tempted to revisit his old pro-choice positions. Up until now, however, he has calibrated his statements in a way that could still be defensible from a pro-life perspective.

That all changed today, however, with a single post on Truth Social:

It’s one thing to argue that abortion should be left up to the states, which is a position of disagreement among pro-lifers of good faith and one to which I am sympathetic. Trump has on several occasions gone beyond that by criticizing state laws, such as the Florida heartbeat bill signed by Governor Ron DeSantis, as “too harsh,” but such criticism was left out of the RNC platform that Trump endorsed.

The latest Truth Social post is different. The idea that his administration would be “great” for “reproductive rights” is hard to interpret in any other way than as an affirmatively pro-choice statement. By the common usage of the term, if you support reproductive rights it means you want broader access to abortion.

Trump deserves all the credit he gets from pro-lifers for appointing the justices who overturned the legal atrocity of Roe v. Wade. But overturning Roe was only the necessary first step of a much longer battle to protect the lives of the unborn. And on that battle, it increasingly looks like Trump is joining the other side.

In addition to being a moral abomination, it’s unclear what this does for him politically. With this post, Trump will further alienate pro-lifers and divide his own party while doing absolutely zero to win over anybody pro-choice.

I think this is probably going to be a short lived abandonment. Were he to win the election , in order to stay in good with the Freedom Caucus etc he will have to be pro-life, and at that point he will be willing to sign a bill banning all abortions.  Why not?  He is not going to have another election to flip flop in.

How can he stop all abortions? It's up to the states. A majority of the Republicans in the House and Senate would never go for it, even if they were in control.

Correct.

On the other hand, Kamala Harris has vowed to enact a federal law enforcing abortion on demand nationwide.

Trump has simply taken the issue off the table.

“Trump has simply taken the issue off the table.”

No, he has decided, deferred, and deflected the question to the states rather than answering for himself and defending his platform…thus attempting to avoid giving any answer in his negligence of accepting the mantle of leadership.

Some issues require a federal statute and the freedom to make an intrinsically personal decision is one… and the heart of the debate.

It is an ultimately a losing proposition and is yet another example of his gutless disregard for the rights so many hold dear.

Lol. That it's a matter for the states is a perfectly defensible platform and is consistent with the purpose of our governing system. Not everyone is a fanatic who has to force their morality  on the country by passing national laws.

Rest easy, the 2nd Amendment will never go away so the ‘fanatics’ can put that issue to bed, with a warm ‘peace-keeper’ secure under their pillow, regardless of what any particular state or their populace may desire.

Yes, that's an Amendment. Not a law.  They are different things.

Agreed.

The former being a Constitutional right, enshrined in a totally different time and circumstance to own, wield, and/or use weapons that can, have and will continue to kill fellow citizens. A fundamental freedom if only for ‘law-abiding’ citizens? Plenty of daily examples in today’s reality showing how times have changed. Yet somehow this freedom is unassailable.

How then is not the latter a fundamental right allowing ‘law-abiding’ individuals to choose and control their own personal life choices? Choices that have no existential effect on the lives of others? The disconnect is unexplainable, unless of course, those with a political or religious agenda continue to intercede and legislate to make those who provide responsible services and those who seek them criminals.

That isn't completely correct. Most Americans favor reasonable restrictions.

The media set the narrative that Republicans wanted to ban abortions and Republicans could never clarify their positions. That is why they lost elections and that is why Trump buried the issue for good.

The only important issue for me has been settled: Roe v Wade was wrongly decided and now the states can let people decide.

Republicans should put forward a bill to outlaw abortions on healthy, full term, delivered babies then, since Trump insists it is happening.  That will make them look like geniuses!

Let the people decide on an individual decision that suits them and their circumstances and keep states and busy  bodies out of it.

The media simply reported the facts of the campaigns, which were that Republicans in many states were pressing for total abortion bans and in many cases passed legislation that was effectively the same. That is why they could not "clarify" their positions.

Republicans across the country are stained by not only their anti-abortion stance, but by their intolerance of other peoples desire to live their lives in peace without intrusion of the sanctimonious few.

Yup - abortion should be a Federal issue - allowed in all states with common sense restrictions, none after 12 weeks other than exceptions.

It is fortunate that they didn't pass, but Republicans were the ones introducing bills in some states requiring doctors to reimplant ectopic pregnancies if they were removed surgically, which is 1) dangerous to the woman and 2) not possible, anyway.

It is clear that the GOP is infested with uneducated people who want total abortion bans, and will fight to ban even abortions that save the life of the mother when the pregnancy can't possibly result in a live child.  They don't care if they kill the women, so long as they look like they're trying to save the embryo and can pat themselves on the backs for their efforts.

The dead women will go to heaven to bond with their dead babies … and to bond with their lord and savior JD himself!  What could be better than our reality, but the land of milk and honey - where thousands of generations of your family members are stuck with each other for eternity.
