A montage aired on Tuesday's CNN NewsNight reminded viewers of some of the overheated rhetoric that former President Donald Trump has used against his opponents.

Republicans in recent days have re-upped their attacks on Democrats for calling Trump "a threat to democracy" after he tried to overturn the 2020 election and inspired the 2021 Capitol riot. On Sunday, a would-be assassin was spotted with a rifle near Trump's golf course in West Palm Beach. The Secret Service said the suspect did not "have line of sight" on the former president and did not fire his weapon. The incident came two months after Trump was shot in the ear by a registered Republican at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Officials said the gunman had searched for nearby locations where Trump and President Joe Biden were scheduled to appear.

Republicans have slammed Democrats for calling Trump a "threat" and have demanded they tone down their rhetoric. On Tuesday, CNN host Abby Phillip aired snippets of the ex-president going full bore against his political opponents.

But first, she aired a clip of Trump's running mate, Sen. JD Vance (R-OH) chiding Democrats.

"Look, we can disagree with one another," he said on Monday. "We can debate one another. But we cannot tell the American people that one candidate is a fascist and if he's elected, it is gonna be the end of American democracy."

Phillip noted one issue with Vance's remarks.

"Except here is Vance's actual running mate saying exactly that," she said before playing snippets of Trump at various rallies:

It's a choice between communism and freedom.

This is communist, this is Marxist, this is fascist.

There's a radical left, Marxist, communist, fascist.

She's a Marxist. She's a fascist.

Comrade Kamala Harris.

If comrade Kamala Harris gets four more years, you will be living [in] a full-blown banana republic ruled by an anarchy and a tyranny… They're scum. They're scum and they want to take down our country. They are absolute garbage.

On Jan. 6, 2021, Trump infamously told rally-goers in Washington, D.C. that if Congress certified Biden's election victory that day, America as they knew would be over. While the former president did say to march to the Capitol "peacefully," he also said, "And if you don't fight like hell, you're not going to have a country anymore," while telling the crowd, "You have to show strength."

Watch above via CNN.

I don't expect any, the premise that Trump has caused attempts on his life is a ridiculous idea, which was my point.

What else is different? Trump nearly always is doing the things that he chides his detractors for doing, but usually in a more over the top fashion.

You don't actually expect any of the MAGA sycophants to understand the differences do you? That would require more than an eighth-grade education and an above room temp IQ.

Flop: Trump does the exact same thing as Harris!

Can you just stop the pretense Democrats are any different than Trump?  When you constantly use him as your moral exemplar, the idea that's his actions are beyond the pale becomes ridiculous.

Well, it was a rebuttal and a statement of fact to your contention that all wrongs are the same in terms of degree of severity. I.E. all lies are equivalent in scope and effect.

Your comment reduces all immoral acts to a flat line and recognizes no difference between the lie about who did your hair coloring juxtaposed against the Big Lie about the election in 2020.

So you admit I never came close to claiming Trump's  "behavior is somehow like that of any decent, moral human being?," a strawman.

As i'm equating Trump's behavior with Harris, which I'm severely criticizing, the opposite is in fact obviously true.

Well, your use of it in your commentary is indeed a strawman. My use of the statement was meant to show the difference in degree.

You said to JR (and the statement which I quoted in my first comment):

Can you just stop the pretense Democrats are any different than Trump?

To paraphrase this comment: Democrats and Trump both tell lies and those lies are of equal severity. That is what the above sentence, your sentence, means. As a statement it is quite obviously false. No one can hold a candle to the repeated and incessant stream of nonsense that passes Trump's lips. Hence my comment:

Can you stop the pretense that Trump's behavior is somehow like that of any decent, moral human being?

I think that most politicians would like to think that they are moral and just, some are and some are not. Your claim was that all Democrats are like Donald Trump, which they are not. I would hope that most politicians are not as bad as Trump, because Trump tried to reverse a free and fair election and still claims to this day that he won when he obviously lost.

So Democrats, and hopefully Republicans, too, are not as bad as Donald Trump and are therefore "different than Trump."

The first "marksman" was a registered Republican.

The second character voted for Trump in the past and just wanted his time back but lost his nerve and ran.

Whether he's for or against Trump depends on which day of the week it is and whether he's too broke for beer or not.

Either way DeSantis wants to give him life in prison, which is probably exactly what Routh was looking for all along.

Lol.. The shit people will make up because of their partisan needs. The guy published a book calling for Trump to be assassinated.  But sure, it's just a mystery how he felt about Trump.

But he did vote for him.

To be fair and accurate he did not publish a book calling for Trump to be assassinated. He wrote a rambling mess about Ukraine and Russia.

He asked why hasn't Putin been assassinated yet? He also gave Iran permission to assassinate both himself and Trump.  Seriously?

In February 2023, Routh self-published  Ukraine’s Unwinnable War  on Amazon. The book comes with a hefty, pessimistic subtitle: “The Fatal Flaw of Democracy, World Abandonment and the Global Citizen-Taiwan, Afghanistan, North Korea and the end of Humanity.”

...

Routh’s book, first reported on by the  Associated Press , included references to the assassination of world leaders. An entire chapter is entitled: “Why has Putin not been assassinated?”

In another excerpt, Routh wrote “Iran, I apologize. You are free to assassinate Trump.” He also called the former president “fool” and “buffoon.”

“You are free to assassinate Trump as well as me for that error in judgment and the dismantling of the deal,” Routh wrote in another passage first spotted by the  Wall Street Journal , criticizing the former president for pulling out of the Iran nuclear deal. “No one here in the US seems to have the balls to put natural selection to work or even unnatural selection.”

...

It is unclear if Routh, who has no previous military experience, ever met with Ukrainian defense officials. Despite his vocal support for the organization, Routh “has never been part of, associated with, or linked to the International Legion in any capacity,” the volunteer unit told the Daily Beast in a statement.

A spokesperson for the Foreigners Coordination Department of the Ukrainian Ground Forces Command echoed this sentiment to the AP, noting that Routh came to them with “nonsensical ideas” that “can best be described as delusional.”

So yesterday Trump finally took questions from a townhall participant.

She asked how he would lower the prices of groceries.

Trump responded that Harris wants a Communist type of government, he is looking at what windmills are doing to crops and suggested that he might restrict the import of fruits and vegetables.

Huh?

To a student who asked how he is going to bring down prices in general.

Trump answered that we are going to be the Energy Capital of the world, we're gonna pay down our debt, reduce your taxes still further, and your groceries prices are going to come tumbling down, and your interest rates are going to come tumbling down so you can afford that big new beautiful house.

Very light on specifics, high on magical politics.

In further rambling Trump blamed Harris's rhetoric for the second assassination attempt that ended when the gunman was shot after a high speed chase....

let that bit of unreality sink in.

Trump's answer to another question about the economy was

"Drill baby drill" when I get gasoline down to $1.87 everything else will follow.

and they cheered....jrSmiley_80_smiley_image.gif
