Secretary Of Defense Nominee Hegseth Refuses To Say He Would Object To Shooting Protesters
Mentioned Jesus as his lord and savior a few times, something no one asked him about.

Hegseth's confirmation hearing was completely depressing for people who care about this country.

1.  He deflected many questions to his subservience to Trump.  When asked what he would do , he repeatedly defaulted to the "wisdom" of the incoming president.  This included questions about what he would do if Trump gave him an illegal order.

2.  He didnt make a single statement that indicated he would disagree with Trump about anything, even privately.  Rather he acted like quite the fanboy and toady of Trump.

3. Answered none of the questions about his alleged personal scandals, deflecting all of them .

4. Mentioned Jesus as his lord and savior a few times, something no one asked him about.

5. Said that he will look for people to demote or subject to disciplinary measures among the officer corp of the military, based on "wokeness".

The thing that depressed me about the hearing is that no one asked him about his Christian nationalism. Hegseth is a member of a far right Christian congregation whose pastor is described correctly as an advocate for having a country run by Christians.

The Republicans have apparently rallied around him, which given his inability to honestly answer questions is disturbing.  It was as bad as everyone who is not MAGA thought it would be.

The Democrats' histrionics have guaranteed his confirmation. What an embarrassing showing for the Democratic Caucus.  Having Mr. Stolen Valor himself question his credentials was a great visual.

By any objective standards, Hegseth did nothing today but prove he is not qualified.  Not a single Republican would vote for a candidate like this if he were a Democrat nominee.

Hegseth will unquestionably roll over for Trump, he exhibited that repeatedly today.

When asked if he would object to an order to shoot Americans protesting, he said he would leave that up to Trump.

This coming from someone who knows Hillary quashed all of the legitimate rape victims of her husband for many years. .

Dems have once again how little they care about this country and all it stands for. He's more qualified than most of Biden's appointees. They tried to "Kavanaugh" him and it failed miserably.

What a sad display of the left's hypocrisy and fear mongering.

The thing that depressed me about the hearing is that no one asked him about his Christian nationalism.

With good reason. It’s unconstitutional. Religious tests for office are prohibited.

Having said that, it is expected that a public servant will be able to separate his faith from his duty. If there were something in the nominee’s past that indicated he was incapable of that, I believe that would be a reasonable line of questioning.

Seems pretty religious.

Most religions are political, though not necessarily partisan, in that they are concerned with issues that affect people. Religious organizations routinely lobby the government on issues they care about.

At the same time, political officials commonly invoke God or religious beliefs.

Christian nationalism is an ideology that is based around the idea that this is a Christian nation, that this was founded as a Christian nation, and, therefore, it should be a Christian nation today and should be so in the future.

According to survey data, Christian nationalists agree with statements like the federal government should declare the United States of America a Christian nation. Our laws should be based on Christian values. being a Christian is important if you want to be a real American.

US Constitution, Article VI, Section 3:

The Senators and Representatives before mentioned, and the Members of the several State Legislatures, and all executive and judicial Officers, both of the United States and of the several States, shall be bound by Oath or Affirmation, to support this Constitution; but no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States.

I totally get that you don’t like them. I don’t either. But you can’t go interrogating them about their religious beliefs. It has been tried before and it never has a good result.

To his brotherhood within a theologically conservative, hard-right church coalition, Fox News host Pete Hegseth's ascension as President-elect Donald Trump’s pick to lead the Defense Department wasn’t merely opportunistic.

It was providence.

This church coalition, associated with a denomination called the Communion of Reformed Evangelical Churches (CREC) and mobilized by firebrand Idaho pastor Doug Wilson, has grown considerably in recent years by appealing to conservative evangelical Christians who are drawn to a more combative and openly rightwing temperament. Hegseth’s church, Pilgrim Hill Reformed Fellowship outside Nashville, Tennessee, is part of this recent influx to the CREC.

This success has gained the CREC-aligned camp a reputation as an important group in a broader movement on the religious right known as Christian nationalism, though it’s been slower than other Christian nationalist factions to curry favor with Trump's inner circle. Hegseth’s   proximity to the president-elect   is changing that.

The Trump transition did not respond to a request for comment.

But to this group of Wilson-led Reformed evangelicals, Hegseth’s prospective appointment also represents an early return on investment in its yearslong aspiration to create a theocratic state in which traditionalist Christian men lead the military and other essential government institutions. At a minimum, Hegseth’s nomination energizes these Reformed evangelicals to dig in their heels and keep fighting.

Why Pete Hegseth nomination is a milestone for the rightwing Christian movement he follows

Rather than waste his time with people that had already made up their mind they were not going to vote for him he spent time with Republicans that may have been on the fence.  That shows more intelligence than fear.  Trying to say a guy that was awarded a bronze star in Iraq was afraid of talking to a bunch of blowhard senators vying for a soundbite just shows how much some on the left will make things up to try and discredit him.

Is that so?

Among the Democratic Senators who are currently members of the Senate Armed Services Committee:

Sen. Tammy Duckworth -

She became a  commissioned officer  in the  United States Army Reserve  in 1992 and chose to fly  helicopters [ 28 ]  because it was one of the few combat jobs open to women at that time. [ 31 ]  As a member of the Army Reserve, she went to  flight school , later transferring to the  Army National Guard  and in 1996 entering the Illinois Army National Guard...

Duckworth was working toward a Ph.D. in political science at  Northern Illinois University , with research interests in the  political economy  and  public health  of southeast Asia, when she was deployed to Iraq in 2004. [ 32 ]   She lost her right leg near the hip and her left leg below the knee from injuries sustained on November 12, 2004, when the  UH-60 Black Hawk  helicopter she was co-piloting was hit by a  rocket-propelled grenade  fired by  Iraqi insurgents . She was the first American female double amputee from the Iraq War. The explosion severely broke her right arm and tore tissue from it, necessitating major surgery to repair it . Duckworth received a  Purple Heart [ 36 ]  on December 3 and was promoted to the rank of major on December 21 at  Walter Reed Army Medical Center , [ 37 ]  where she was presented with an  Air Medal  and  Army Commendation Medal . [ 36 ]  She retired from the Illinois Army National Guard in October 2014 as a lieutenant colonel.

Sen. Mark Kelly -

In December 1987, Kelly became a   naval aviator   and received initial training on the   A-6E Intruder   attack aircraft. He was then assigned to Attack Squadron 115 ( VA-115 ) at   NAF Atsugi   in Kanagawa, Japan. He was deployed twice with VA-115 to the   Persian Gulf   aboard the aircraft carrier   USS  Midway , which was homeported at   Naval Station Yokosuka   in   Yokosuka, Japan . During   Operation Desert Storm , Kelly flew 39   combat missions . After the Gulf War, Kelly received his master's degree and then attended   U.S. Naval Test Pilot School   from 1993 to 1994. As a naval aviator and test pilot, he has logged over 5,000 hours in more than 50 different aircraft and trapped over 375 carrier landings. [ 10 ] During his Navy career, Kelly received two   Defense Superior Service Medals ; one   Legion of Merit ; two   Distinguished Flying Crosses ; four   Air Medals   (two individual/two strike flight) with Combat "V"; two   Navy Commendation Medals , (one with combat "V"); one   Navy Achievement Medal ; two   Southwest Asia Service Medals ; one   Navy Expeditionary Medal ; two   Sea Service Deployment Ribbons ; a   NASA Distinguished Service Medal ; and an   Overseas Service Ribbon .

Sen Jack Reed -

Reed graduated from  La Salle Academy  and the  United States Military Academy  at  West Point , where he received a  Bachelor of Science  degree in 1971. After graduating, he spent several years in active duty military service. Reed earned the  Ranger Tab  and was a  paratrooper . He served as a paratrooper in the 2nd Battalion,  504th Parachute Infantry Regiment 82nd Airborne Division  where he was a platoon leader,  company commander  and battalion staff officer,,,

He returned to West Point in 1978 as an associate professor in the Department of Social Sciences. [ 2 ]  He left active duty in 1979 after earning the rank of captain. He served in the  United States Army Reserve  until 1991, and retired as a major.

Sen. Gary Peters -

Peters joined the   United States Navy Reserve   in 1993 at age 34. [ 14 ]   He served more than ten years in units at   Selfridge Air National Guard Base , including   Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 26 . [ 14 ]   During his Navy service, Peters earned the   Seabee Combat Warfare Specialist   designation and carried out assignments as an   assistant supply officer . [ 14 ]

Peters's reserve duty included time in the   Persian Gulf   supporting   Operation Southern Watch ; he served overseas again during increased military activity following the   September 11 attacks . [ 14 ]   Peters attained the rank of   lieutenant commander   before leaving the Reserve in 2008; his awards include the   Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal   and the   Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal . [ 14 ] [ 15 ]   In 2018, he received a diploma from the   College of Naval Command and Staff , part of the   U.S. Naval War College . [ 16 ]
