Non-citizen Chinese immigrant is sworn in on SF's Election Commission
Kelly Wong, an immigration rights activist who came to the US in 2019 from Hong Kong for graduate studies, was unanimously appointed by San Francisco's Board of Supervisors to the city's Elections Commission on Feb. 14.

A Chinese immigrant has been sworn in to serve on San Francisco's Election Commission despite her lack of US citizenship, raising national security concerns as one US senator warns that Chinese President Xi Jinping is playing the "long game."

Kelly Wong, an immigration rights activist who came to the US in 2019 from Hong Kong for graduate studies, was unanimously appointed by San Francisco's Board of Supervisors to the city's Elections Commission on Feb. 14.

She is believed to be the first non-citizen ever to sit on the commission, after California voters approved a measure in 2020 to eliminate the citizenship requirement to sit on San Francisco boards.

"There are always voices inside my head, like 'You can't do it. You're not competent. You're an immigrant. This is not your country,'" Wong told KQED following her historic appointment last week.

"If I can do it, you can do it," she said.

In her new position, Wong — who cannot legally vote — is one of seven people who will oversee and implement policy for the Department of Election.

She will oversee voter registrations, vote-by-mail ballots, voting locations and election observations.

"This appointment is a milestone for all immigrant and marginalized communities throughout San Francisco," Wong wrote on her now-deleted LinkedIn profile last Thursday, according to the Epoch Times.

"Representation matters: thousands of immigrants living in the city hold stakes in politics, and there is no better way to have us be represented than to serve in leadership positions.

"I am deeply committed to ensuring that everyone, regardless of immigration status, has a seat at the table in shaping the future of our city," she added.

Wong said she hopes to increase voting engagement among immigrants and those who do not speak English.

"Even though I'm fluent in English, I still encounter challenges in navigating a new system, let alone participating in political conversation and activities," she told KQED.

But because the position is unpaid, Wong is also planning to continue her work with the advocacy group Chinese for Affirmative Action — a non-governmental organization founded in 1969.

Its mission is to protect the "civil and political rights of Chinese Americans and to advance multiracial democracy in the United States," according to its website.

The group was previously responsible for lobbying the government to change the law to allow non-citizens to vote in San Francisco school board elections if their children attend a school in the district.

3Sen. Eric Schmitt (R-Mo.) warned that Chinese President Xi Jinping is playing the "long game" in an interview with Fox Business' Maria Bartiromo. Fox News

But Wong's appointment to the elections board has some around the country concerned about China's increasing influence, with Sen. Eric Schmitt (R-Mo.) warning that President Xi Jinping is playing the "long game" after 452 Chinese migrants were caught at the southern border in just the past three days, per Customs and Border Protection data.

"Look, they're flooding our borders with fentanyl, killing Americans," he told Fox Business' Maria Bartiromo on Tuesday.

"China is playing the long game here," the Republican said, arguing that the Chinese have "completely populated the spaces that people make decisions, including the White House.

"This is how civilizations, you know, ultimately lose their way — and the idea of having an open border where anybody can come from anywhere without asking any questions is nuts," Schmitt continued.

"We need to do everything we can right now to sort of hold Mayorkas responsible and [President] Joe Biden responsible," he said, referring to Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, whom the House of Representatives impeached last week.

The Post has reached out to the Elections Commission and the San Francisco Mayor's Office for comment.

Let's not forget that >20,000 Chinese illegal alien military age men have entered the US through Jacumba, CA in YTD2024. The CCP doesn't allow their citizens to freely travel without its authorization. There have been thousands of acres of farmland near military bases bought by the Chinese. Then, there are the Confucius Institutes, Chinese police departments, the mysterious Chinese "balloon" that was allowed to fly all over the USA. One more thing ... illegal alien Chinese men have been documented doing firearm practice in the USA.

Of course this is a trial run and goal.

I'm really amused by the excessive paranoia overflowing from the article and comments here.  All kinds of effort is being made to tie Xi Jinping into this, and, wait for it, the scary word is coming...COMMUNISM.  She immigrated from Hong Kong, not China's mainland, two years ago.  People who leave Hong Kong are usually those who DON'T WANT to be controlled by the government of the mainland, and it's unlikely that they would be spies for the mainland government.  The article and most of the comments are just plain outright RACIST, and I truly believe caused by FEAR!!!  Why don't you fucking scaredy-cats start a movement to reinstate the China Exclusion Act?

I understand perfectly.  I believe that people who live in a city, support the city's businesses, send their kids to the city's schools and if they own a home pay the city's real estate taxes have every reason to be able to vote on school issues and municipal issues, whether or not they are American citizens.  And pointing out that they happen to be Chinese IS RACIST.

And it amuses ME that the article and comments are NOT deemed racist and fearful.

i disagree.    In virtually every developed country in the world “citizenship” bestows upon a person certain rights and privileges more than non citizens.    That IS the norm.    Not the other way around.

Nothing racist about that.    Nothing at all and stop with the thinly veiled insults.   They are completely wasted energy.

This issue came up on this site years ago, and I believe and argued this point then and feel no differently now:

I believe that people who live in a city, support the city's businesses, send their kids to the city's schools and if they own a home pay the city's real estate taxes should have every right to be able to vote on school issues and municipal issues, whether or not they are American citizens.

Unfortunately I see that notwithstanding that particular issue has been litigated, at this point it has lost so far, as in this POLITICO article.

LINK ->

The Republicans won (explaining to me the tone of their comments on the current article) but who knows, the matter could be appealed further.

As for bias, the fact that Xi Jinping was brought into the issue by the article author when the individual, as I explained, probably wanted nothing to do with Xi Jinping and the mainland government, AS I EXPLAINED ABOVE was DIRTY ROTTEN JOURNALISM and the fact that he made a big thing about her being Chinese IS RACIST.   I would not have bothered so much with this article if the person who posted the article had properly declared the personal shots at me because I'm in China to be off topic, then maybe all of this could have been a little more BALANCED.

Although I have spent time during my life in about 17 different nations, I always obey the laws of those nations and never got into any trouble.  Different nations have different laws, do they not?  The whole world is not "The home of the brave and land of the free" America and as much as America boasts of its "personal rights and freedoms" this article and its supporters are negating it because there are many people in America who do not have the privileges that America boasts of.

Ah, I didn't realize you had posted this when I posted that decision above.  I have previously and still agree with the previous claim that was made, as I explained above.

Per ICE data, only 288 Chinese nationals were deported from the U.S. in fiscal year 2023, despite more than 24,000 Chinese nationals being encountered at the border during the same year.

The epicenter of illegal aliens' entry is now Jacumba and San Diego, CA due to Abbott's and other governors' strong actions in Texas.

As of 23Feb2023, 9:30AM (PT) today, 6 large buses picked up over 200 illegal aliens and transported them to depots or airports, so they could then freely travel to wherever they wanted to go in the US, thanks to NGO and cartel "help". Chicago, NYC, NJ, FL, and VA were the most prefered destinations. These unvetted illegal aliens, all military-age men, came from China, Syria, India, Afghanistan, Brazil, Venezuela, Mauritania, Turkey, Senegal, Ecuador, Costa Rica, Columbia, and Peru.

Tossup between Jacumba, CA and Lukeville, AZ. I'll go with Lukeville myself.

That is absolutely correct. Places that have a welcoming committee for the migrants, plus aid and a drivers license that involves voting.

Seldom do we see the Mexican migration anymore. When so come from so far away as China, the question is how could so many afford it.

The only color that attracts politicians' interest is green.  This does affect Nancy Pelosi's Congressional district, after all.  And just look at all the money to be made.

Maybe Kelly Wong is only a pathfinder preparing the way for her compatriots.  China does seem to play a long game.  And Democrats don't miss a trick.  Another Democrat created controversy, another dollar.  Vote early, vote often, vote Democrat.  Starving liberal politicians need your support.

A lot of outside moderation on a group article. It must be a Conservative group.

BTW this is not about race or residency, THIS IS ABOUT A NON-CITIZEN PRESIDING OVER LOCAL ELECTIONS.

San Francisco

Wasn't this Diane Feinstein's district?  The same Feinstein who had Chinese spies working in her offices?
