Pics from Maine
Last month, I took a trip to Maine with my parents and sister. Dad and Sis did a lot of golfing, and Mom and I did a lot of sightseeing. Here are some pics from that trip.
At Portland Head Lighthouse - the Annie Maguire wrecked near the lighthouse on Christmas Eve, 1886. All aboard were saved, with the lightkeeper, his wife, and their son crafting a temporary gangplank from a ladder. In person, the gap spanned by this gangplank was pretty intimidating.
The beach at Portland Head
Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse
Penobscot Narrows Bridge. If you look closely, you'll see that there's an observatory at the top of the bridge, to the left in the pic.
And here's a view from that observatory.
Bar Harbor
The view from our cabin on Chemo Pond, before sunrise.
Beautiful photo essay, Sandy. I love the one at the beach. It has a really nice moodiness about it.
I have got to get to Maine. It is the only state on the east coast that I have never been to.
Thank you! It is a beautiful state. If you like moody beaches, here's one:
This is beautiful.
I've always loved the fog.
that place looks a little too chilly for my liking, even in the summer months...
We used to go on vacation in Cape Cod and Lake Winnepesaukee? (s0elling?) Weirs Beach, in New Hampshire and no matter how warm the summer was, the water was always cold!
Nice photos, Sandy. I especially like this foggy one. It is really beautiful.
Thanks, G.
It was in the 80s one day, and folks were complaining about the heat, which gave us southerners a chuckle. The rest of the time, it was 60s or low 70s. We didn't go in the water, but the few people doing water sports were mostly wearing wetsuits.
Neither have I.
Vacation pics.
You didn't visit Steven King? Haha
We did go through Bangor, and the cabin wasn't far from there, but we didn't want to scare him, so we left him alone.
Come to think of it, I don't think I have ever been to Vermont either.
Neither have I. Before this, the farthest into New England I'd been was Massachusetts.
Maine is the only New England state where you have a sense of size and distance and unlike Cape Cod, people go up there for the "great outdoors" as well as the beach.
Everywhere we went, people were out walking or biking. In Acadia National Park, there were no parking places available near any of the hiking trails.
That would be one of the first places I'd go in Maine. I'm a huge King fan, ever since I was about 12.
The article pic is Portland Head Lighthouse. The view from the parking lot is pretty much postcard-perfect.
Can wave to the lighthouse in the distance...
Nice photo essay, sandy.
I've been to Bangor a couple of times. I got lost going to Quebec.
Thanks, Kavika. We got lost a few times, too. One thing I will say about Maine - they do not know how to do street signs. One we really needed to see was posted behind a utility pole. Very helpful
you ended up in Bangar ? when you asked for directions, were you told , "ya caunt get theah from heah ." ?
my attempt at a maine "down east accent "
Although I've either spent time in, or at least driven through all the east coast States myself, I never did get to Maine.
Sandy, would you like me to enlarge those photos for you? My vision is waning and I couldn't make out the Penobscot Narrows Bridge.
Try them now, Buzz. I was trying to strike a balance between picture size and resolution.
Better, of course, but on my own I copied and clarified and sharpened the photo of the bridge and saw that it runs between the two towers just under the horizon. You took some pretty good photos - and you should start posting your photos on A.Mac's NT Creative Arts group weekend photo sessions.
If you can improve on them, I'd be grateful. I lost some sharpness when I enlarged them.
Compare what I did with yours. You might prefer the softness of yours and I might have made my adjustment too harsh, but I had to in order to actually see the span of the bridge. Let me know if you want me to edit your other photos.
Thanks, Buzz. Would you mind seeing if you can improve the pic of Bar Harbor? I lost a lot of resolution there.
It's a little better. I found that if I sharpen it more the waves start to look weird. You can delete the images you don't want so there's no duplication.
Thanks, Buzz.
Evening... great photos and looks a lovely place...for me the sea always wins hands down...
Love seeing photos of other parts of the world where other people live or go for holidays....
Thanks for sharing!
One of my favorite states. Many summer vacations were spent there, long ago.
Looks like You had a great vacation
We sure did.
Just read this, hope you don't mind Sandy.
Neat!
I don't mind.
I did have to laugh a bit when stores would advertise that the sold Stephen King books. Ok? Like I can't usually get the latest at Walmart, and just about everything he's ever written at Barnes & Noble.
Beautiful photos, Sandy! Thanks for sharing them with us
Thanks, Trout!
wait a minute, I just realized you probably left your teenage son at home alone. what a cool mom.
He's 18. So, teenager, but an adult.
lucky you, most 18 year old males aren't usually 100% mature at that age... /s
so..., no apparent damage?
... when will his girlfriend be moving in?
truthfully, maine wouldn't have been in the top 10 on my domestic vacation list, but whatever. I'm glad you had a chance to get away from it all with your family and have some fun.
He and his gf broke up, and I'm doing a happy dance over that.
While I was gone, he changed the exhaust in his car, and promptly got pulled over for the noise. So, that whole "adult" thing is relative.
I'd have liked to have gone later in the fall, when the leaves had changed a bit more. Maine was more my Mom's thing. She, Dad, and my sis went back in the mid 90s, but they had barely crossed the state line when they got word that Mom's brother had died unexpectedly, so they turned around and came home. So this was a do-over for her.
>sigh< ..... we need to talk...
it was nice that the do over worked out and you got to go this time.
I'll send you straight to him. When I talk to him, all I manage to do is piss him off.
fuck that, I failed twice with that age group. that amount of testosterone in the bloodstream causes temporary insanity for 3-5 years. convince him to go to school where that behavior is considered an acceptable rite of passage, or start looking for an excuse to throw him out, like asking for his share of the room and board. then he can graduate to the roommate in the party house phase.
We're working on year 8 of that temporary insanity. But at least he pulls most of his stupid shit somewhere else. He didn't wreck the house while I was gone. He didn't literally wreck the car, just paid to have its exhaust messed up.
a straight pipe header, mating call for a segment of the opposite gender in that age group, no pun intended. he'll probably move out on his own...
