Over 100 Former GOP Officials Endorsed Harris Today
As President, he promoted daily chaos in government, praised our enemies and undermined our allies, politicized the military and disparaged our veterans, prioritized his personal interest above American interests, and betrayed our values, democracy, and this country's founding documents.

More than 100 former staffers and national security leaders from past Republican administrations endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris on Wednesday—adding to the growing list of Republicans speaking out against former President Donald Trump.

A number of outspoken Trump critics, including Miles Taylor and Adam Kinzinger, signed the letter.

Key Facts

The letter—released by the group Reagan, Bush, McCain & Romney Alumni for Harris—is signed by 111 former officials from those administrations as well as ex-Trump staffers like Miles Taylor, along with some former Republican members of Congress like former Illinois Rep. Adam Kinzinger.

In addition to criticizing Trump's national security record and "demonstrated chaotic and unethical behavior," the letter condemned Trump's actions on Jan. 6, 2021.

The letter comes after other notable members of George W. Bush's administration—including former Vice President Dick Cheney and former Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez—endorsed Harris over Trump in recent weeks.

Forbes has reached out to Trump's campaign for comment.

Key Background

Earlier this month, the GOP group put out another letter signed by more than 200 Republicans who said another four years under Trump would "hurt real, everyday people and weaken our sacred institutions." A number of Republicans who oppose a second Trump term spoke at the Democratic National Convention in August, including Kinzinger and Olivia Troye, both of whom signed the letter, along with four others. Still, polling indicates the vast majority of Republican voters intend to support Trump, who has typically lashed out against Republican critics and accused them of irrelevance.

Chief Critic

"These are the same people who got our country into endless foreign wars and profited off of them while the American people suffered," Steven Cheung, spokesperson for Trump, told Forbes in a statement. "President Trump is the only president in the modern era not to get our country into any new wars."

Here's The Full Letter

We are former national security and foreign policy officials who served in the administrations of Presidents Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush, and/or Donald Trump, or as Republican Members of Congress. We have served in the White House, the Departments of Defense, Treasury, State, Justice, Homeland Security, Commerce, and other agencies and in Congress.

We believe that the President of the United States must be a principled, serious, and steady leader who can advance and defend American security and values, strengthen our alliances, and protect our democracy. We expect to disagree with Kamala Harris on many domestic and foreign policy issues, but we believe that she possesses the essential qualities to serve as President and Donald Trump does not. We therefore support her election to be President.

We firmly oppose the election of Donald Trump. As President, he promoted daily chaos in government, praised our enemies and undermined our allies, politicized the military and disparaged our veterans, prioritized his personal interest above American interests, and betrayed our values, democracy, and this country's founding documents. In our view, by inciting the violent attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021 and defending those who committed it, he has violated his oath of office and brought danger to our country. As former Vice President Pence has said "anyone who puts himself over the Constitution should never be President of the United States."

Donald Trump's susceptibility to flattery and manipulation by Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping, unusual affinity for other authoritarian leaders, contempt for the norms of decent, ethical and lawful behavior, and chaotic national security decision-making are dangerous qualities - as many honorable Republican colleagues and military officers who served in senior national security positions in his administration have frequently testified. He is unfit to serve again as President, or indeed in any office of public trust.

Vice President Harris has demonstrated a commitment to upholding the ideals that define our nation — freedom, democracy, and rule of law. Her experience as Attorney General of California and her leadership on the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence and as Vice President have helped prepare her to be President.

We are prepared to support her as President because she has:

  • Consistently championed the rule of law, democracy, and our constitutional principles;
  • Pledged to "ensure America always has the strongest, most lethal fighting force in the world" and to honor and respect those who wear the uniform;
  • Committed to sign the bipartisan Border Security package, drafted under the leadership of Republican Senator James Lankford and other Republicans, which would hire 1,500 new Customs and Border Protection personnel and provide more resources for law enforcement but was opposed by Donald Trump to avoid giving President Biden any political advantage;
  • Supported a strong NATO to stand up to Russia and protect European and American security and been firm in her support of Ukraine;
  • Declared her intention to ensure that the United States will meet the economic and military competition with China;
  • Declared her intention to "always stand up for Israel's right to defend itself" and "to take whatever action is necessary to defend our forces and our interests against Iran and Iran-backed terrorists";
  • Demonstrated that she can engage in orderly national security decision-making, without the constant drama and Cabinet turnover of the Trump Administration; and
  • Committed to appoint a Republican to her Cabinet in order to encourage a diversity of views and restore a measure of bipartisanship and comity to our domestic politics.

We appreciate that many Republicans prefer Donald Trump to Kamala Harris, for a variety of reasons. We recognize and do not disparage their potential concerns, including about some of the positions advocated by the left wing of the Democratic party. But any potential concerns pale in comparison to Donald Trump's demonstrated chaotic and unethical behavior and disregard for our Republic's time-tested principles of constitutional governance. His unpredictable nature is not the negotiating virtue he extols. To the contrary, in matters of national security, his demeanor invites equally erratic behavior from our adversaries, which irresponsibly threatens reckless and dangerous global consequences.

In short, Donald Trump cannot be trusted "to support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic . . . and bear true faith and allegiance to the same." We believe that Kamala Harris can, and we urge other Americans to join us in supporting her.

That is a very impressive list filled with prominent, highly accomplished Americans who have made significant contributions to our country.  I'm a life-long Democrat but I have also long admired many of those individuals, who happen to be Republicans.  Any campaign should be proud of their endorsement.  Of course, the haters, the reactionary extremists and the maga trump cultists will disparage and belittle them.  That's to be expected.

On Harris:

Vice President Harris has demonstrated a commitment to upholding the ideals that define our nation — freedom, democracy, and rule of law. Her experience as Attorney General of California and her leadership on the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence and as Vice President have helped prepare her to be President.

We are prepared to support her as President because she has:

  • Consistently championed the rule of law, democracy, and our constitutional principles;
  • Pledged to "ensure America always has the strongest, most lethal fighting force in the world" and to honor and respect those who wear the uniform;
  • Committed to sign the bipartisan Border Security package, drafted under the leadership of Republican Senator James Lankford and other Republicans, which would hire 1,500 new Customs and Border Protection personnel and provide more resources for law enforcement but was opposed by Donald Trump to avoid giving President Biden any political advantage;
  • Supported a strong NATO to stand up to Russia and protect European and American security and been firm in her support of Ukraine;

  • Declared her intention to "always stand up for Israel's right to defend itself" and "to take whatever action is necessary to defend our forces and our interests against Iran and Iran-backed terrorists";

I think a more rational perspective is to compare the two nominees objectively.   Start with fitness to serve.   Right off the bat, Trump is clearly not fit to serve in any position of public power, much less the presidency.   He is unacceptable and should be discarded.

Harris, in contrast, is as fit to serve as any other PotUS.   She is a normal, rational candidate.   You disagree with her politically, and that is fair and justifiable, but you completely ignore the myriad of truly horrible qualities of Trump.   Using his form of expression:  there has never been a nominee of a major political so unfit to serve as president.

When faced with a choice of a normal, fit person to serve as president and one who is wholly unfit, the choice should be obvious.   It is a fundamental failure of the electorate that Trump remains even under consideration for the most powerful office on the planet.

My point does.    Did he just become unfit in the last four years.    Was he unfit during his presidency?    How did we survive his four years if yes etc, etc.

Was he unfit during his presidency?

Clearly.

  • His wall initiative was a failure.
  • His replacement of ACA was a complete failure.
  • He raised the national debt more than any other PotUS in history during a four year term.
  • His ill-conceived tariffs raised domestic prices.
  • He is entirely irresponsible regarding the environment and climate change.
  • He is a clown who makes the USA look ridiculous on the world stage.
  • He is easily swayed by world leaders appealing to his immature ego.
  • His bullshit about the pandemic 'fading away', etc. to help keep the stock market high rather than immediately acting on the pandemic was a prime example of how Trump cares more about his personal needs than those of the nation.
  • He is the only PotUS in our history to thwart the peaceful transfer of power by using coercion, fraud, lying, and incitement in an attempt to remain in power.   He violated his oath of office by trying to circumvent the CotUS and disenfranchise voters.
  • He is an impulsive, loose-cannon who always thinks he is the smartest guy in the room and thus fails to leverage the wisdom and expertise of advisors.
  • He is a career con-man who puts himself over anything else (including the nation) and the most notorious liar I can think of in recent history.
Rationalizing that Harris is somehow more fit to serve than Trump

It does not require rationalizing.    In US history there has been no more unfit nominee of a major party than Trump.    Given you used 'somehow' suggests you do not understand why this is true.

His ill-conceived tariffs raised domestic prices.

He had to bail out the farmers if I remember right

Government payments to farmers have surged to historic levels under President Donald Trump as the Agriculture Department floods the industry with cash to stem the financial losses from Trump’s tariff fights and the coronavirus pandemic.

Correct.

His ill-conceived tariffs backfired and so he had to spend more money supplementing farmers with the Market Facilitation Program.   And in the long-term he adversely changed the global agriculture market which has still not recovered for USA farmers.

How about some specifics? I don't remember anything more than a couple of speeches. If we want to go head to head on some speeches then Harris is the clear winner. If we want to go by actions then it's comparing apples to oranges - Harris has not tweeted out military secrets from the SCIF, nor has she given Russia intel Israel gave us. Just 2 reasons why Trump shouldn't be trusted in office again.

Trump is old, irrational and easily swayed by those around him. Around him now are the worst right wing populists in US history.

There are so many it’s hard to believe you haven’t noticed but on the chance it will actually take this time, I will use one of the most recent ones.    In her recent interview with NABJ Harris droned on about being a gun owner (someone needs to tell her squirt guns don’t count) and she will not take anyone’s gun.    In her next sentence she says she wants a complete assault weapons ban.

This one example is an excellent window into Harris’s soul.

She can not be trusted

In her next sentence she says she wants a complete assault weapons ban.

Not surprising as it's a Dem platform issue. Reagan did it.

This one example is an excellent window into Harris’s soul.

You are not a god...

She can not be trusted

I trust her more than the guy found guilty of habitually cooking his books and civilly liable for grabbing pussy.

So then it should be simple to put up some examples.

I just did

Quote and link?

I watched it.    Guess you didn’t

You are not a god...

Doesn’t take one to make that observation.    Not even close.

She can not be trusted
I trust her more than the guy found guilty of habitually cooking his books and civilly liable for grabbing pussy.

Telling analysis.

Telling analysis.

It is. You can look into the souls of people, yet support a crook and a sexual predator. I do not. I will never support the admitted pussy grabber. It's obscene.

His handling of classified information would be comical if it wasn't already tragic. Even with the broken system we currently have he's not to be trusted with OPSEC material and a smart phone.

His constant scorn for our military where his only need was to have a 'big beautiful parade' down Pennsylvania Ave like some tinpot dictator is nearly as obscene as his sexual deviance.

What do these Republican luminaries expect from Kamala Harris in exchange for their support?  These Republicans are Deep State agents who utilized the bureaucracy to autocratically impose the ideological imperatives of liberal institutionalism and neoliberalism onto the United States and its allies.

These Republicans recognize that Kamala Harris is the best chance to revive and strengthen policies that have not served the country well.  With endorsements like these, why is it any surprise that Donald Trump is still viewed as the better choice?
