HOUSTON (AP) — A Texas deputy constable working an off-duty security job at a Houston mall was fatally shot by a man who gained control of the officer's own gun, police said. The suspect was shot by police and died at a hospital.
Deputy Neil Adams was working a second job Thursday afternoon at PlazAmericas mall in Houston when he was shot by a man in 30s, Houston Police Chief Troy Finner said.
Authorities are still investigating what led to the altercation. Finner said the suspect ran to the mall's food court where he was shot by two Houston police officers. The man, whose name has not been released, died later Thursday at a Houston hospital.
Adams had worked as a deputy constable in nearby San Jacinto County, north of Houston.
San Jacinto County Precinct 1 Constable Roy Rogers said Adams became an officer in 2012 and previously worked for the sheriff's department. Adams was the county's environmental officer, Rogers said.
"We lost one of our heroes. He was a good man," Rogers said. "He worked hard to take care of his family, to take care of the constituents of our county."
Scumbag. He is dead now though.
Good that the bastard is dead.
The number of brain surgeons who with guns are taking on the police just keeps going up and up. Would love a deep dive into the backgrounds of these people to find out what else is going on that thinks they are gonna get away with it.
I'm pretty sure all the anti-police rhetoric from 2020 and 2021 are factors.
Coming from the 'right'

I think there are a very large number of factors here, stretching all the way back to when Reagan shut down the mental institutions due to the law suit. There is a very large contingent of people with mental illness who are being left to their own on the streets and out in public. For a large segment of society there are "doctors" who proscribe anti-depressants which have shown to have increased anger and agitation in some. The problem just continues to grow.
And I'm not trying to sit here and say this was the underlying cause. There are many pieces that have festered for many years. So before the usual subjects come in with their drive-by sniping please think about everything that has happened to get us to this point.
How much of this was something that we basically did to ourselves years ago when (and yes, it was a good reason why the mental institutions at that time were shut down) they shut down the old institutions without anything to really take it's place and instead just let them loose in public to take care of themselves. A great society is judged by how it takes care of the lesser of themselves and I'm afraid in this regard we have failed badly and there isn't any movement in Washington to change that course.
not to mention the how to videos from 1/6/21 at the capitol...

I don't understand why everyday occurrences in America are considered "news". Now if a day goes by when someone ISN'T shot to death in America, THAT would be news worth reporting. Personally, I think it's such an ugly human rights issue I simply cannot comprehend how Americans have the hypocritical chutzpah to criticize other nations on human rights.
