Safer Vaping
A few years ago I got a routine eye exam. It revealed two things.
1. I still have 20-20 vision.
2. I have dry macular degeneration.
Yep. My eyes are degenerates. I guess I must have watched too much porn. I probably shouldn't have watched that slightly perverse " Girl on Girl on Midget on Goat " video. I couldn't resist watching it because it sounded so creative and artistic. And the goat was an excellent actor.
My eye doctor perscribed Bausch & Lomb PreserVision Eye Vitamin & Mineral Supplement (Areds 2 formula). I was relieved. No hypodermic needles in my eyes!
Then came the bad news. He asked me if I smoked cigarettes. I told him I quit about fifteen years ago. He said "that's good. If you don't want to go blind, you need to stop smoking everything . " He must have noticed how bloodshot my eyes are. I knew better than to tell him I believe in an "ounce of prevention" to avoid glaucoma. So I told him I was using my wonderful Traegger Smoker Grill on a regular basis (true story). He told me to wear swimming goggles when I cook or I would go blind.
Damn, he said to quit smoking everything. I had been smoking weed every day (usually all day long) for decades. Oh well, at least he didn't tell me to stop masturbating. So I bought several different kinds of snorkeling goggles (I also enjoy snorkeling). And I also bought a couple of these:

Review: Firefly 2
As we touched upon briefly, this unit features on-demand convection heating, a first for the vaporizer industry. Most vaporizers have a 1 – 2 minute heat up time and once they reach the set temperature they maintain that temperature during the entire session, while this is an effective way to vaporize herbs it can be a bit wasteful because the herbs are cooking even if you are not drawing from the unit.
With the Firefly 2 your herbs are only cooked when you press the heating buttons and begin drawing from the unit. Once you let go of the buttons and stop drawing your herbs no longer cook, which helps preserve their integrity for the next draw. Unlike most units the Firefly 2 does not have an on/off function, the unit is constantly on and in standby mode. There are 2 touch sensors, which we will refer to as buttons, on either side of the unit, when both are pressed the green light at the top of the unit will flash slowly for about 5 seconds until it turns solid.
When it turns solid you are ready to start drawing from the mouthpiece, for best results we recommend extremely slow, long draws. The device goes back into standby mode after holding the buttons down for 30 seconds, we found for the best draws you will want to inhale for that entire duration. This device does have a fairly steep learning curve, so if you find yourself underwhelmed after the first session do not be discouraged, you essentially have to unlearn everything you knew about vaporizers and start fresh with this device. When we first used the unit we had the same sense of disappointment, but after a couple more sessions we finally figured out how to take proper draws and produce some very nice vapor.
The Firefly 2 also includes an app which is used to change your temperature profile, switch to concentrate mode and even change which buttons need to be pressed to heat the device. In our experience the app was a little finicky when connecting to the device. We found the easiest way to get the device to connect if the app won’t recognize the vaporizer is to close the app, switch your phone into airplane mode and then disable airplane mode, tap both buttons on the firefly to ensure its awake, and then open the app again.
I know what you're thinking. Vaping is destroying people's lungs. Vaping is very dangerous. I agree. Here's a quotation from Perrie's current seed ( Michigan Teen Needed New Lungs Because Of Vaping ):
Investigators at the CDC reported a breakthrough last Friday, saying they had discovered vitamin E acetate in lung fluid samples of 29 patients from 10 different states.
Vitamin E acetate , an oil, is a synthetic form of vitamin E. It appears to be used as a cutting agent in THC e-liquid as a way to dilute the product. It's been found in half of the 419 THC product samples tested at the Food and Drug Administration. Patients affected by the illness have reported vaping both THC and nicotine.
As solid as the evidence is for vitamin E acetate as a source of the outbreak, it's likely just one of multiple causes.
The FDA has found other diluents, such as medium chain triglycerides and polyethylene glycol, in products. Medium chain triglycerides are sold in oil form as a dietary supplement, and polyethylene glycol is the active ingredient in over-the-counter laxatives.

I vape organic buds (from growers I know, and trust). I use a grinder to produce a coarse grind. I don't vape THC oil, I vape good ole "medical" marijuana. And I do NOT add Vitamin E or laxatives to my weed.
I also use the lowest temperature when I vape. I can adjust the temperature of my Firefly 2 with my i-Phone (the app is available online at the Apple Store).
Since the weed doesn't burn, no smoke is produced . Butt, I still use goggles (most of the time). My vision doesn't seem to be deteriorating.
After I hit the Firefly several times, I open it and stir the bowl with a toothpick. Then I can get a few more hits. And when the bowl is played out, I dump the "dregs" into a container. I can make canna butter with the dregs (the dregs are decarboxylated weed) and I cook lots of high flying recipes with the butter. The dregs can also be smoked (butt I can't do that).
I recommend using two Fireflies. One Firefly can be on the recharger while you're vaping.
I don't claim that what I'm doing is "safe vaping", butt it is a safer way to get high. Smoking anything is bad for your lungs (and you eyes). And, as David Brinkley once said, "Everything that's fun is either carcinogenic, fattening or illegal." Butt, I like to have fun, so I risk it.
As you can probably tell, if you seen my stupid content, I usually vape when I NewsTalk. I also imbibe "medical" ethanol. That's why I enjoy NewsTalkers so much.
This article was originally published in MrFrost's new group.
Unfortunately, it didn't show up on the "Front Page" or even under "Columnists".
So I republished it here in SiNNERS and ButtHeads to make it more accessible.
Now everyone can tell me how stupid I am.
The Firefly is very nice and portable.
I consider the Storz and Bickel Volcano to be the finest vaporizer ever made.
Very cool.
That's an amazing device.
Does it also produce plutonium?
There was a case in Florida a day ago where a 20-year-old was on life support because his lungs could not support him because of vaping. He said that he only used store-bought vaps and no THC...If he is telling the truth there is a hell of a lot more danger than we are aware of at this point.
Another study just came out today and the testing that was done was on bootleg vaps and they consisted of formaldehyde and that is deadly as can be.
It also mentioned that even on the store bought vaps they can be heated to twice the accepted temp and that again causes serious problems.
My mother always told me that I'd go blind if I didn't quit. It was really hard but I managed to... ahem... pull it off while I was only severely nearsighted. Oh wait.. vaping?
Do you have hairy palms?
Those vapes are dangerous.
The can contain almost any chemicals because they're not controlled.
The temperature of the Firefly 2 can be controlled using a smartphone.
I keep the temp on my Firefly at the lowest temperature and, of course, I don't use any "additives".
And I only need a fraction of the quantity of weed to get high as I did when I used a bong.
Burning weed destroys some of the THC.
Is vaping marijuana safer than smoking marijuana?
Yep.
Wishing you only the best, I have to advise against lying to - or hiding things from - your doctor. It's not like he's going to turn you in to the cops. He can only give you his best advice and care if he has complete information. You never know: he might be able to give you some options you weren't aware of.
Many years ago, I was honest with a doctor about my marijuana use.
Two days later a couple of county social workers (from the local department of social services) came to inspect my home and interview my children. They came unannounced. They said my doctor reported my "drug use". They said if I didn't permit them to investigate they could "take my kids into custody until I vacated the dwelling."
I told them to leave my kids in the house with my wife (naturally she denied using drugs) and I would pack a bag and leave immediately.
They said I had to wait until their inspection was complete (including privately interviewing my kids).
When they came back downstairs about an hour later, they interviewed me. I lied to them and said I never smoked in the house. They smiled and stood up. They said the investigation was over and they apologized for the inconvenience. They shook hands with me and told me not to leave because they had determined that I'm a "good father" and complemented me for having such loving children.
WTF? Wasn't that a HIPAA violation?
How awful!
Well you said "many years ago" and HIPAA only dates to the 90s; so, maybe not?
However, I think most states recognize some kind of doctor-patient privilege that prevents the state from using your communications with the doctor against you in court. That means your statements to the doctor couldn't be the basis for the government taking your kids away from you.
I suppose this could have been overridden by some mandatory reporting requirement that says drugs in the home are a threat to kids, but that seems like a stretch. Usually the exceptions are for things like gunshot wounds or contagious diseases.
In 2002, I went to the ER with a boxer's fracture.
While I was getting casted another doctor walked in the room with a cop and a patient with a broken jaw.
The cop said "Is this the guy that hit you?"
The broken jaw guy said said "no" and they left.
WTF? Was that legal? A one man line up is BS. And what about HIPAA?
Yeah, probably. Neither you nor anybody else had been charged with anything at that point, so an official adversarial case didn't yet exist. You also weren't in custody. Both of those factors means your rights hadn't really kicked in yet.
It's the same as if a victim gave a description to a cop on the street and the cop points at someone and says "that guy over there?"
Well, they didn't question you or your doctor about your medical issues. They just wanted to know if you hit a guy.
I had no idea those things were so complicated. They look like little flying saucers. On the other hand, that is probably an accurate description.
I guess you're talking about Dean's video.
I used a older Volcano (before they made "hybrids"). It only had the "balloon" option.
Volcanoes look complex, butt they're fairly easy to use.
OTOH, the Firefly 2 (in the article) fits in my pocket and is easier to use.
BTW, that's a huge fucking blunt in your avatar pic (unfortunately the tobacco portion can cause you to have low birth weight babies).
