Just as we were leaving the house yesterday afternoon, we saw this guy next to the driveway, so I got out of the car and took a couple of pictures. He was eating a lizard, and then, he slithered up the wall and disappeared on the hill.

yeesh, no thanks. this is the time of year when I'd be installing telecommunications for a homeowner and forget to kick the ped and one of these guys would slither out over my lap when I took the top off. not a fan of snakes...
That was just a harmless Garter snake, good for pest control. I haven't seen one for several years. The thing I don't want coming around is a rattlesnake, although they do live in the canyons and hills here.
classifying the type of serpent wasn't the first thing that crossed my mind as it slithered across my lap.

I'm already in a 40 year long war with spiders, why add another species conflict.

Unfortunately, we found a mouse nest today that the snake hadn't taken care of. This one was trying to swallow a live lizard. We have little lizards hanging out.
My wife is terrified of the snakes, even the harmless ones.

I can honestly say they don't scare me at all, have the greatest respect for them and leave them alone in the bush etc..
But if they are in my backyard then they are fair game.. killed a few over the years but hated doing it...
can't you just pick them up and set them over the fence in a non-threatening and gentle way?

my touring bicyclist friend told me that ozzies are absolutely the worst drivers on the planet. naturally I challenged him on that statement since he's never ridden in asia. today he starts his summer ride from naples to norway.
In Beijing and Shanghai the traffic was coming from every direction, but they all seemed to know what they were doing and I think I only saw one accident. Of course, they were all moving pretty slow. I wasn't driving, just a passenger.
That is a LONG ride.
he's insane. he rode from toronto to BC last year but didn't make it to vancouver because some farmer forced him off the road while passing him with a tractor and hay baler and he broke his shoulder. he's ridden across the US 3 times.

Around 6 weeks ago they finished the Japanese garden in the park next to us and we went over to see it. It uses rocks in place of water then to me I thought it was quite beautiful and just imagine what it will be like in a couple of years when it matures.

Spring is progressing. The oaks have started tasseling out with catkins, filling the air with that yellowish pollen that gets everywhere.
A cardinal in the snowball bush.
Irises.
Indigo buntings returned yesterday.
Eastern towhees have been back for a few weeks.
The hummingbirds have returned, too. They didn't visit the feeder while I was waiting with the camera, but some honey bees did.
April's bounty, asparagus from the garden. I've been getting about this much every two or three days.
The weather is still being freaky. It was hot like summer for a while, but now it's cool again, and there's been very little rain so far.
Garden time is fast approaching
Most of the potatoes I planted early survived the handful of frosts and freezes that happened after the warm winter fooled me, and they look like they're doing well. It's kind of weird to have those green, growing rows in the middle of an otherwise bare garden.
yikes. you need one of those highway maintenance tractors to cut the grass in that yard.
Couple of sheep would do the trick.. portable lawn mowers, free fertilizer and roast lamb...yum..
Watch out for those sheep. I just read an article, that I may post, about the sheep that killed the shepherds.
It takes several hours, usually split up over a couple of evenings, but it's really not so bad. A lot of it is open with nothing to mow around.
Arvo...if it was in NZ it was a pensioner couple it killed..
Was a ram and killed the man first and his wife went looking for him..the ram killed her as well and the police shot it...
Yep, a pair of 80-year-olds in NZ. It was a ram that did it. I'd venture that it rammed them, and I guess they couldn't dodge it. .

The Intrepid farmer Darted into the field like a Roadrunner, raising a Fury in the Ram. Possessed by a Demon, like a redeyed Hellcat, it became a Charger at this Challenger. The farmer made a Valiant effort to get away but ended up a Duster

I kind of like having winters off, lol.
I don't think my wife wants to stop. Remember, she grew up on a farm and is not at all afraid of hard work so for her it's a labour of love.

I've seen the Northern Lights from my lakeside home in Ontario, but they were NOTHING compared to those.

Never seen anything like those...we have the Southern lights (Aurora Australis) but nothing like that...

Saw similar sights from my time at McMurdo Station, Antarctica back in the late 80's. I will never forget them.

I remember in 1990 I flew from California to Christchurch, New Zealand in May for a couple of weeks, courtesy of the US Government. It was nice and balmy and warm in Southern California, but in Christchurch it was cold, windy, and rainy. Good thing I had warm clothes with me.
