The three pictures I've posted have nothing whatsoever to do with one another, except that I took them.

Let's see what you've got.

great x3 !

when did you take that picture at lake powell? the reason I'm asking is that without a boat in the foreground for scale, I can't tell how high the watermark is on the canyon wall. the water mark is back from '85 I think, when the lake hit it's highest capacity of water ever. the lake usually hits it's highest water elevation in the first part of july. I was there on a fishing adventure in may that year. that lake changes it's topography a lot with any major influx or release of water.

2 years ago it was very low. finding sunken boats on the bottom of the lake low. it's come back some since the snow pack in colorado has been above average for the last couple years, but with it feeding phoenix and vegas, it won't be hitting full pool anytime soon.

I looked out the window late Monday afternoon just as it was starting to get dark and saw this owl sitting on the tiles separating the pool from the Jacuzzi.  I grabbed my phone and took a a few of pictures through the window from pretty far so the pictures are not as clear as I would like.  After about a minute or so it flew away.  It was a big guy.  It does seem like cropping them as I did and using a couple of other editing tools creates something of a painterly effect.

My mom has kept hummingbird feeders for years.  My high school's colors were black and red, so at any give time when I was growing up, several of us were probably wearing a red t-shirt or sweatshirt.  Hummingbirds love red, and we got buzzed all the time.  Hummingbirds are also much more aggressive than their size justifies.

6.1.4  devangelical  replied to  sandy-2021492 @6.1.3    one month ago

I spent a big part of youthful summers with my cousins trying to catch one. it never happened. my mother kept a feeder outside her kitchen window on the deck in the mountains west of denver. she was constantly filling it. the territorial battles for male dominance of the feeder raged endlessly. she also upset the balance of nature by feeding the raccoons dry cat food. she basically made her deck hazardous to humans 24/7 during the warm months.

6.1.5  sandy-2021492  replied to  devangelical @6.1.4    one month ago

Yeah, they're voracious.  Sometimes, she fills her feeder every other day.  I guess it takes a lot of calories to keep those wings beating that fast.

We also had raccoons, but we didn't feed them intentionally.  They got into the trash.  The garbage company kept smashing the metal garbage cans, so we got the Rubbermaid ones, and they lifted the lids right off.  So we put a cinder block on top of the lid, and they ate a hole all the way around the cinder block so that it fell through, and got at the garbage that way.  Clever little assholes.

The brushies are kinda cute.

Raccoons are cute, but they can be a nuisance if they get too comfortable with humans, and unfortunately, they can be a vector for rabies.

I have the occasional bear, too, which is why I don't put out any bird feeders.  They like to eat from my pear tree.

I haven't seen any raccoons around my house since I moved in 15 years ago.  I did see one at a neighbor's house, but I'm almost sure it was rabid.  It was stumbling around in the middle of the day, not able to stand up, and completely unconcerned at my presence.

L.A.

Home.

That particular skyline is primarily Wilshire Blvd in and around West L.A./Westwood.  Downtown L.A. is several miles east, to the left in the picture, and the downtown skyline is too far away to be shown.

The photo could be showing smog, or at least some smog, but since there are clouds it could also include some of our marine layer.  It's a little hard to say.  The ocean is only about 6 miles to the west (to the right in the photo).

The stonework in the photo is part of the Getty Center, which is in the hills in that area (Brentwood).  Since the Getty Center did not open until 1997, I don't think that photo can be from 1983.  Construction didn't begin until 1989.

Another view from the Getty Center (photo is from the internet).

It can't be 1983.  The area where the stonework is was just brush back then and there was no road up there to see that view.  It would have been quite a hike to reach that spot, but the giveaway is the stonework.

Memories, memories.  When I was a kid, spending school summer vacations at my grandmother's summer cottage at Burlington Beach (the thin strip of land separating the far western tip of Lake Ontario from Burlington (a\k\a Hamilton) Bay my uncle would take me fishing at the end of the pier on the bay side of the canal that permitted the boat traffic from the lake to the bay.  No fence, we sat on the pier with our legs dangling over the water. rods in hand.  No fear, the fish weren't big enough to pull us into the water.  We caught mostly carp, perch and sunfish.  My grandmother would make gefilte fish from the carp and perch - the sunfish were too bony.
