Religious notes

Christ commanded us to love one another.

These "Christians" seem to have lost that message.

The hatred being spewed by self-styled "Christians" is perhaps the most amazing aspect of Trumpism.

Millions of people have turned away from the God they have always worshiped, to bow down and adore such a creature as Trump.

Their "spiritual leaders" have much to repent.

Evangelical Pastor Spreads Election Lies: “No One is President-Elect”

I had to double check when   Pastor Tim Sheets   gave this sermon to Oasis Church in Middletown, Ohio. The answer: Sunday morning, about 24 hours after   Joe Biden   won the election.

And yet   Sheets spread lies   to his congregation, telling people the media was full of “prophets of Baal” — a false God — as if they were making up their election calls. (They were not.) He also dismissed Biden’s victory and claimed (without evidence because there is none) that Democrats were committing fraud.

They have been fake news for quite a while . Why would we listen to the fake news?

Now the fact is   no one is president-elect . The fact is there has not been one state certified. The fact is the votes are still being counted. And the fact is we have God on our side…

We’ve been praying for chaos and commotion and corruption to be exposed. You just saw it!

A lot of people said, “Oh, no, no. It’s not that bad. It’s not.”

Well, you just saw.   They are willing to lie. They are willing to be fraudulent. They’re willing to stop an election and, in the middle of night, find thousands of votes.   And the deplorables I know are not weak-kneed warriors. I run with a crowd that believes what God says is possible. May have gotten harder, but it didn’t get impossible.

Just your standard Christian sermon right there…

To be clear, while the paperwork isn’t completed for a few weeks, all of that is a formality. The counts are in. Joe Biden won. He will likely win with the same number of electoral votes that   Donald Trump   received in 2016 — but with a larger popular vote share and wider margins in several swing states. All the Trump lawsuits currently working through the courts won’t overturn that.

Sheets is a sore loser — and his congregation, if they’re willing to listen to him, must be even worse — who only accepts God’s Will when it perfectly aligns with the Republican Party’s wishes.

This is what white evangelical Christian has become. It’s pathetic. Any pastor willing to lie about an election should be expected to lie about God, too. No one should ever take these people seriously.

Texas Pastor: Any Christian Who Voted for Democrats “Made a Covenant with Death”

Some Christians are not handling the election results well.

Here’s   Pastor Kenneth L. Redmon   of   Abundant Life Worship Center   in Midland, Texas offering a   straightforward message   to his congregation: If you voted for Democrats, you deserve to die.

Every believer that voted a blue ticket made a covenant with death.

You listen to me online as well, those of you that are watching today and those of you that will see me later on, on YouTube, I’m not taking this down. You’ll see me on YouTube, you listen to me.

You believers that voted against the righteousness of God, a day of reckoning is coming. You made a covenant with death. You not only said that “I do not condemn the babies that   have   been aborted, I do not condemn the babies that   will   be aborted.” You’ve made your covenant with death and God will not forget that.

You can repent. But even after repentance, sin carries a consequence. You can pull the nail out of the piece of wood, but it will leave a scar. You can repent for it. And I’m pointing at you: God help us if anyone in this church voted [for] the unrighteous man and the unrighteous death of babies.

You put a worshiper of Moloch ahead of God’s righteousness … And what He did with Israel, He’ll do with those who have made that covenant.

Totally sane guy right there…

Redmon is saying that voters who had a problem with a Republican leader who ignored or downplayed COVID ( 239,000 deaths   and counting), who tore apart refugee families, who was accused of sexual assault, who caused limitless misery, and whose own policies made it more likely that women would need to seek abortions in the first place deserve biblical condemnation…

Sure, they voted for decency, professionalism, and addressing the underlying problems that often lead to abortions, but THAT MAKES GOD ANGRY!!!

The truth is that if a different Christian pastor used similar words to (fairly) denounce Republicans, that guy would be condemned by right-wing and Christian media outlets everywhere. Redmon will barely be acknowledged because we’re so used to this kind of insane rhetoric from preachers like him.

Turning millions of people away from a gospel of love... persuading them to follow a gospel of hate...

That is evil.

There must be a limited number of motives. Their behavior is not random.

Their devotion to Trump obviously has a fervor usually found in a religious context. Is it possible to "transfer" fervent devotion from one object (Jesus) to another (Trump)? That would seem (to me) to require an emotionally unacceptable "betrayal".

I'm sure it's important to understand the working of the Trumpist mind... but I'm not getting very far.

I've been trying to understand this behavior myself. It's as if they just totally ignored the Gospels and went straight to Paul by way of the Old Testament. They don't show any adherence to what their Savior told them.

No, they don't. Jesus was so involved in helping the sick... but these people parade their indifference to a quarter-million dead.

I'm mystified. Perhaps we'll see something significant in their reaction to the defeat.

"When about a third of the people saw that Jesus was so long in coming down from the mountain, they gathered around conservative Republicans and said, “Come, make us a god who will go before us. As for this fellow Jesus, who nobody's seen for 2000 years, we don’t know what has happened to him.”

The Republicans answered them, “Take off the gold earrings that your wives, your sons and your daughters are wearing, and bring them to me.” So a third of the people took off their earrings and brought them to the Republicans. They took what they handed them and made it into an idol cast in the shape of a golden fat man, fashioning him into a total tool. Then they said, “This is your god, conservative Christians, who brought you up out of liberal progressive secular rule!” - Exodus 32:1-4 (paraphrased)

It is group think.   The leaders backed Trump so the sheep back Trump.    This is the power of religion — it causes people to set aside their ability to think critically and instead accept as truth what their authority figures deem as such.

That's probably a part of it. Still... I cannot understand "Trump in church". The President's salient characteristics are polar opposites to Christian values.

Imagine operating as a sycophant for morally corrupt Trump (anything Trump does is right) while deeming Harris a whore because she had a one year long relationship with Brown 25 years ago and Brown (her boyfriend) helped open a career door for her.    The misogyny is strong with this one.

There should be some impressive cognitive dissonance there.   But, apparently, not.

In fact he was supposedly attacked by the Pharisees for going and eating and socializing with the tax collectors and prostitutes.

11 When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”( 12 On hearing this, Jesus said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. 13 But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’[ For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” - Matthew 9:11-13

Yes. I think that's important. No cognitive dissonance. They have no difficulty holding diametrically opposed ideas.

So it's impossible to reach them by pointing out incoherences.

Mary Magdalene was not a whore. Some pope back in the day gave a homily and mixed up the Magdalene with the prostitute that Jesus saved from stoning. From then on, people had the idea that the Magdalene was a whore.

I have read "research" that claims that Mary Magdalene was married to Jesus and gave birth to his daughter.

From my perspective, it seems like Jesus is a more useful tool for atheists to point out hypocrisy than as a tool for Christians to elevate their morality.  If Jesus came back today he’d be crucified all over again - by those who call themselves Christians but don’t understand a thing about how Jesus supposedly lived.

I met a guy in Venice Beach, CA once who was selling artwork.  In the one simple exchange I had with him, he appeared to me as the closest thing to the Jesus character that I’d ever met.  I asked if he could come down on the price of something.  He replied “how much would you like to pay”, and calmly accepted my offer.  He was unclean and living out of his packed van, but he just radiated a sense of peace that was unforgettable to me ... and I barely remember what I had for breakfast most days.  The piece of artwork was a small carved stone Buddha head.

Hey, somehow Christians sometimes seem to forget that Jesus was Jewish, and all of his disciples who knew him during his life, remained Jewish.  It was only Paul, who did not know Jesus except through a vision, who created a syncretistic religion (a combination of Judaism and Neo-Platonism) that became Christianity.  Right?  That's assuming, of course, that any of those people really existed.  Scholars do tend to think there was a historical Jesus.

As for Jared, I think he's a complete disgrace to our Jewish heritage and plenty of other Jews do, too.  And don't get me started on Stephen Miller.  Even his own relatives denounced him.

 It was only Paul...

IMNAAHO, Paul transformed Jesus's message to the point that he created a different faith.

Christ's message was very simple. Paul created a ton of rules. By fixating on those rules, Paul shifted the spotlight away from "love", opening the way for all the not-in-gospel things like the Trinity or Virgin Birth.

We've reached the point where those non-gospel items have crowded out "love".
