Festive China: Dragon Boat Festival
The Dragon Boat Festival falls on Monday this year, which is the fifth day of the fifth month on the Chinese lunar calendar.
There are many legends about the 2,000-year-old festival, but the most famous one is commemorating the death of Qu Yuan, a patriotic poet from the State of Chu during the Warring States Period (475-221 BC).
Qu Yuan is said to have been loyal and patriotic his whole life. When he realized the decline of Chu was beyond recovery, his remorse knowing he could no longer save it grew stronger and stronger. On the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, he threw himself into the river and died for his beloved homeland.

I have never seen a dragon boat race live, but they do show them on TV. Today is Dragon Boat Festival, and we celebrated it by having the family here for a festive meal of the traditional foods for the occasion.
Anoon buzz. Dragon boat racing is quite big here especially up Queensland way. The food sounds good, what did you have?? Always nice to have family around...
I forgot to take a photo of it, but the main traditional food was zongzi, the triangular-shaped vine-leaf wrapped glutinous rice in which some pork, or a red date is inserted (the video shows them clearly), also a baked fish, and yellow veggies, in addition to fried puff-balls and some other things that I have no idea what they are. The video shows some of those things. I think it was last year that I posted a photo-essay of my wife and her sister-in-law making zongzi.
Dragon Boat Festival is celebrated by many, all over the world. Has anyone actually witnessed live a dragon boat race?
