At least 150 people were killed in hundreds of shootings over the Fourth of July weekend, according to CNN, as Chicago saw its deadliest weekend of violence so far this year.

Citing data compiled by the Gun Violence Archive, CNN said the US had seen a surge of 400 shootings over the weekend.

A total of 92 people were shot in Chicago over the weekend, according to  The Chicago Sun Times , with 18 people killed.

Six children were reportedly injured in shootings in the city during what Police Superintendent David Brown had warned would be the “most challenging weekend of the year”.

In one incident on the  South Side , two people were killed and four wounded, including a 12-year-old girl and a 13-year-old boy.

Around the same time, a six-year-old girl and a woman were shot in West Pullman, while another shooting hours later saw an 11-year-old-boy and a man shot on the South Side.

Two Chicago police officers were also among those who suffered gunshot wounds, according to the Chicago Police Department.

In a Twitter statement, the department said both officers were transported to Stroger hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

It comes as  statistics released by police on Thursday  showed that there were fewer killings in Chicago over the first few months of 2021 compared with the same period last year, despite a rise in the number of shootings and people shot.

According to the data, there were 332 killings in Chicago between 1 January and last Wednesday, representing six fewer than in the first half of the year in 2020.

Meanwhile, in New York, at least 26 people were shot in 21 shootings between Friday and Sunday, according to CNN.

While New York has seen levels of gun violence unparalleled in recent years, the figure represents a drop from the same time last year, when 30 people were shot in 25 shootings, the broadcaster said.

In addition to the violence in Chicago and New York, there were several mass shootings, or shootings involving four or more victims killed or wounded by gunfire, elsewhere over the holiday weekend.

In Norfolk, Virginia, four children were shot on Friday afternoon, including a six-year-old girl who was reported to have suffered life-threatening injuries, but is now in stable condition, CNN reported.

A 15-year-old boy has been charged in connection with the shooting, which also saw a 14-year-old boy, a 16-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl shot at, although they are expected to recover from their injuries.

In another shooting early on Sunday morning, eight people were injured in a shooting near a car wash in Fort Worth, Texas, following an argument between a group of men, according to the Fort Worth police department.

Looking at that picture made me think that one hell of a good investment would be in the company that manufactures that yellow tape.  It would be really ironic if it were a Chinese company.  What's it like to live in a nation-wide virtual open shooting gallery?

it likely IS a chinese company that makes the tape , just looked at some of my surveyors tape thats unopened , label says made in china .

these types or reports are no surprise anymore , i have even quit asking the where question , its predictable

as for living in a nationwide open shooting gallery , its not , it is like an esteemed contributor here says , one simply has to know where to go and where not to go and when to get out of there. with situational awareness its not as dangerous as the media portrays , that would be close to a quote i think.

Just reading the head lines here.

First for US.... New York declares gun violence a disaster emergency.

Not sure what that entails but maybe a glimmer of hope..

.So other words keep your head down at all times..

more like keep your head on a swivel and be aware whats going on around you .

now i will likely get lambasted for what i am about to say but these are my honest observations .

take where i said i dont even look anymore to see WHERE this is going on , its predictable to me , places with higher populations( i say over 100k to 500k is a high population area some might think its a million in a small area , but that is seeming to matter   and usually in places with some of the more already stricter gun control laws in the nation , like there is a race to prove those laws dont work. usually being run by the party of the blue ticket even if they are surrounded with suburbs that vote red .

Those are things i see , the geographic area , the political climate and control as well as the population density per square mile . as i said its being aware of where you are and watching whats going on around you .

i forget what the population density is in some of the cities , but where i am , 6 people per square mile in my county?  so my probability of being involved in a shooting , is rather low .

saw that , i wouldnt count on it doing much , from what i read the gov is declaring a border war with the states the guns are comig from , problem is those states are not in his jurisdiction and not under his control, about all he might be able to do is start searching cars coming across the border or busting the people in the state under his jurisdiction and sending them to jail.

saw that some funds were made available for summer jobs , and some for police task forces , ( sure to make the defund crowd happy) , and some other spending declaring a state of emergency opens up.

Gidday Mark...I think you are pretty well spot on with what you have said.

You call it as you see it and no not everyone would agree, but each to their own.

Pretty sad though you have to live like that eg where you are and what area you are in.

Here you never give it a second thought...and that is the way I like it.

Stay safe...

"take where i said i dont even look anymore to see WHERE this is going on"

That's in a way similar to a comment I made previously that since it's an everyday thing in the USA I don't consider shootings to be news any more.  If a day goes by when there ISN'T a shooting in the USA - THAT'S news.

just had one last week in my immediate area ( keep in mind , immediate area here is in a 50 mile radius) , first one in a year and a half , trooper doing a traffic stop, shot and wounded will live , guy that shot him ? well one does not shoot a wyo state trooper and live usually, DOA, but then again they know that and usually end up committing suicide .

I always thought that was one of the most selfish ways to try to kill oneself. Cops can feel.

The one here was a house in my area. I know where it is. Some piece of shit shot up a couple people.

No arguments on thinking its selfish , , here the leading cause of gun deaths are suicide , the state has the highest number nationally , but not all suicides are gun related here , the next leading cause is an LEO shooting , someone starts a shootout with the cops , next is drug or gang activity  and actually those 2  are interchangable depending on criteria ., other causes such as self defense or assaults with a firearm, accidents  are actually very low here .

that happened about 125-150 miles away from where i am , and its been what 25-30 years now? things have changed a lot in respect to  LBGQ , and somewhat for the better , its accepted that people are different and will be , doesnt mean there isnt discriminatory cat calling , or fist fights , but its not an all out broke back mnt scenario where if ones caught they will be beat to death because they are, not to say that cant happen , its not likely too, there are always going to be idiots that walk with us .. things change , even if that change comes extremely slowly ,  its that being willing to change and the time to thing.

When a university student travelling in a subway train is shot to death through a window, it underlines my belief that nobody is safe from being shot to death in America, no matter where they are and what they are doing.  and no matter how much members here pooh pooh that concern.  How about the adage that nobody is safe until everybody is safe?
