Olympics boycott calls nothing but affectation

Luo Jie/

As expected, some Western politicians are calling for a "diplomatic boycott" of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.

This is self-serving showboating.

In accordance with the relevant regulations of the International Olympic Committee, it is the Olympic committee of each country that invites its state leaders and government heads to attend activities related to the Olympic Games as guests.

Given the grim COVID-19 situation around the world, it is not appropriate to invite foreign guests to the host country of the Olympics Games on a large scale. This was the case for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics as well, which was postponed to this year.

Athletes should always be the leading actors on the stage of the Olympics. The success of the Games has nothing to do with whether certain Western politicians will appear in the spectator seats or not.

Foreign athletes, many US athletes included, are eagerly looking forward to coming to China for the Games.

And under the guidance of the Olympic spirit and with the efforts of all sides, the Beijing Winter Games will undoubtedly be a splendid showcase for the Olympic Spirit and the new inclusion to the Olympic motto, "togetherness".

Like the 2020 Tokyo Olympics which was also held against the backdrop of the raging COVID-19 pandemic, the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics will provide the world with an opportunity to demonstrate the indomitableness of the human spirit and the unity of the world in the face of this common enemy.

Those narrow-minded politicians trying to hijack the Olympic spirit with their ignorance and prejudice stand against humanity and on the wrong side of history.

The success of the Beijing Winter Olympics will be reflected in the performances of the sportsmen and sportswomen from around the world and their embracing of the Olympic spirit.

The shameless and selfish hamming of those Western politicians hoping to politicize the event to boost their support at home merely exposes how mean-spirited they are.

My sentiments as well.  Politicizing the Olympics, when the whole purpose of the Olympics is to soar above such behaviour and promote the unity of humanity, unify all the world through sports competition, is nothing but a childish ploy to impress the constituencies of the  politicians - a useless gambit because it will not pressure China into changing its domestic policies notwithstanding the purpose of such a strategy.  The games will proceed, the athletes will do just fine without their infantile political leaders present, and China will put on a magnificent show as they did in 2008.
