Republicans close to Donald Trump are planning an “intervention” aimed at resetting his campaign amid a political firestorm that has ensnared the controversial presidential nominee, according to a published report.

NBC News said former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, along with Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus, are among the Trump allies who want to convince Trump to shift his tactics .

The report comes after Trump lashed out at a Gold-Star family critical of his position on Muslim immigration and went on to decline to endorse House Speaker Paul Ryan for re-election.

Donald Trump is facing some of the harshest criticism yet — from heavyweights of the conservative movement. Are questions about his state-of-mind and fitness for the presidency getting more serious?

The Republican heavyweights hope to enlist Trump’s children in the effort, according to the report.

Asked on Fox News about the report, Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort said it was the first he’d heard of it. But he added: “The only need we have for an intervention is maybe with some media types who keep saying things that aren’t true.”

A separate report, from ABC News, said  Republican officials are exploring how to handle a scenario in which Trump would drop out of the race for the White House . Trump hasn't given any indication he no longer wants to be the Republican nominee, ABC noted. But the report said senior party officials are so frustrated and confused by his behavior of late that they are exploring how to replace him at the top of the GOP ballot if he did quit the race.

I read on another article that they (republicans) are talking about sending a senior republican with Trump on the campaign trail to ''keep him on message''.

LOL, the guy is running for president of the US and he has to have a baby sitter to keep him on message!!! That should scare the hell out of the American public.

What they need is to have him sit on the advisor's lap and use the advisor's hand up Trumps jacket to control what words come out of his mouth. Either that or just duct tape his mouth shut until after the election.
