Why does Mississippi cling to the Confederate flag?
Mississippi and the Confederate Flag. Two incidents over the past two weeks in Mississippi deserve attention regarding the confederate flag.
1. A Mississippi gulf coast city mayor is refusing to fly the state flag because it contains the confederate battle flag.
2. The women's regional NCAA softball tournament is being played at Ole Miss and the state flag is being flown in various parts of the state. This has created controversy with some participants and groups.
For the life of me, I cannot understand why in 2017 the official state flag of Mississippi has to contain the confederate battle flag. I am a born southerner and I love civil war history. However, the confederate flag and confederate symbols do not belong in the public square. Mississippi has a great civil war park at Vicksburg where the confederate flag flies today. If this is really about "heritage and not hate" put that flag in a place where your heritage can be honored in its appropriate place.
