Netflix - Don't Look Up
This was released in December, but I only watched it last night. Great flick! Impressive cast, too — Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Meryl Streep, Cate Blanchett, Rob Morgan, Jonah Hill, Mark Rylance, Tyler Perry, Timothée Chalamet, Ron Perlman, Ariana Grande and Scott Mescudi. (list from Wikipedia)
You can find it on Netflix.
From Netflix:
Two astronomers go on a media tour to warn humankind of a planet-killing comet hurtling toward Earth. The response from a distracted world: Meh.

Thoroughly entertaining. It held my attention the whole time, and I found the political and media satire to be quite poignant. Biting even.
It was also great to see Jennifer Lawrence again. She seemed to have dropped off the radar there for a while.
Definitely worth watching.
Watched it and I would have to agree that it is worth the watch.
If I get on youtube or or social media sites, I'll be greeted with videos or posts suggesting that this film is trash. (note: not posts by friends, but the random crap that somehow makes it onto the feed, and I can never really be free of) I've been seeing those for a while, and I'll admit that I watched with those in mind. I enjoyed it. This was in my realm of interests to begin with. Makes me wonder about the media machine, data tracking, etc., though. Is there a group of people that think this is trash? Is there a brewing controversy here? Or, am I the victim of targeted marketing?
From what I've read it was intended to be an allegory of the less than stellar response to scientific warnings about climate change, but to me it feels like it also applies to the way that many have treated the pandemic, and it makes quite a statement about deplorable politicians and an uber-wealthy tech/donor class paving the way to disaster with lies and self-interest.
I imagine people who feel like they're the ones being satirized don't like it very much. There's probably quite a few of them out there, running the gamut from climate deniers to anti-vaxxers. Not to mention that Meryl Streep's presidency in the movie was obviously meant to mock Trump – the nepotism, the hats, the slogan chanting, awarding high office to donors, etc.
I'd say you're 100% right. Funny though. Apparently Trump is the only president anyone remembers using hats, slogans, and awarding posts to donors and family. Regardless, I assumed Trump was the target, understood that all of these jokers play the same game, and enjoyed the movie.
I'd say the "don't look up" chant at the rally was just a little too close to "lock her up" to be anyone else but Trump.
Yeah, definitely the movie digs at Trump. My point is we've all become so enamored or engrossed in all things Trump, people are forgetting nepotism isn't new, nor is pay to play. None of it is.
They hit the media pretty hard in their portrayal, also. Probably why the so-called critics don't like it
While phonetically it matched up to the "Lock her up" chant, the message was clearly different. It was mocking the right wing conservative Republican demand to not believe your own eyes. "Don't Look Up!" is exactly what right wing conservative media has been chanting for years now, everything but what they are feeding you is "fake news", climate change isn't real, Trump didn't really get help from the Russians, Trump didn't actually extort Ukraine for dirt on Biden, Trump didn't really cheat on his taxes or pay porn stars to shut them up during the campaign, Trump wasn't really for abortion before he was against it, trickle down economics isn't really broken, Christmas and Christians really are under attack regardless of the lack of evidence, and there really is a 'Deep State' because if there wasn't you'd be able to trust your own eyes, but there is so you can't so believe us instead...
The entire platform for the Republican party is essentially "Don't believe your own eyes!" aka "Don't look up!".
Very broad satire of modern media in all its current forms. I think it's a niche film. Great cast.
This is one of the best "doomsday" films ever produced. It was better than Dr. Strangelove because it was more believable.
The mix of science, media, politics, egos and big tech was outstanding.
Such a great movie! I loved the biting satire and while watching it kept thinking...this seems all too real.
It's on my watch list. Eventually I'll get around to it. I'm not really big on satire.
You gonna luv it. There were a lot of parts that I actually laughed at - which is rare for me. Seeing all the biting satire and the political gambits being played out was hilarious.
I'm about 15 minutes in and have laughed out loud several times already.
I might like it because I like weird movies.
What is stopping me is it comes off as one of those movies with an all star cast that basically has a bunch of egos that think they are the best things around.
I paused it to do some laundry, but so far, I'm not really getting that any of the actors are divas. It has an "ensemble cast" feel to it.
When you get to the end (if you haven't already) make sure you flip through the credits, there's a couple more scenes hidden in them – one about mid-credits, and another at the very end. I imagine some people miss those not knowing they're there.
The Bronteroc was satisfying.
Haha. Interstellar justice.
This got really bad reviews to the point i didn't want to give it a shot. It looks like some found some value in it so maybe it's worth a try
Different people will seee this movie differently. It is definitely not for every taste. Reactions will range from masterpiece to garbage based on ones expectations and affinty for extreme satire.
Meryl Streep's tramp stamp made the movie worth watching.
I was wondering how much of the nude stuff at the end was real. Does she really have a tramp stamp?
