'Moving to Canada' Searches Spike After US Election
Responding to news of Trump's presidential win, Americans are looking online for information on how to move north.

So, why not Mexico?  (Cancún is supposed to be a popular year round destination.)  Or Central America?  (Costa Rica had become a popular destination for ex-pats.)  Why not Argentina or Peru in South America?

The southern border is wide open.  Thousands cross the border unimpeded every day.  And there's no need to worry about legalities; just walk across like millions of other undocumented migrants.

Hypocrisy?  You betcha.  Democrats don't really want to mingle with those south of the border Hispanics, after all.

Searches for "moving to Canada" have soared following Donald Trump's election win.

As news trickled in overnight that the former president would return to the White House, many Americans seemed to consider the idea of relocating north, with Google Trends reporting a peak number of searches related to the topic.

With 277 electoral votes to Vice President Kamala Harris' 224, Trump has won the 2024 presidential election. So far, the former president has carried the key swing states of Pennsylvania, Georgia, Wisconsin and North Carolina. During a victory speech in West Palm Beach, Trump said his win would usher in a "golden age for America."

By 8 p.m. ET on election night, searches for "how to move to Canada" had a 400 percent day-to-day increase.

Searches for "how to legally move to Canada" were also up 200 percent over the last day, Google Trends showed.

Searches about moving to Canada were highest in Vermont, Oregon and Washington, states that voted overwhelmingly for Harris.

Related searches along the lines of "moving to Canada requirements" and "moving to Canada from U.S." were also breakout Google Trends, meaning they increased in popularity by more than 5,000 percent over a given time-period—in this case the past day.

On social media, comments about moving to Canada appeared to be proliferating.

"I'm packing my bags and moving to Canada," wrote one user on X, formerly Twitter.

Another posted information on the ways in which Americans could immigrate to Canada.

On June 27, following President Joe Biden's televised debate with Donald Trump, searches for moving to Canada significantly increased.

After Trump won the 2016 election, the Canadian immigration website crashed because of the unprecedented high numbers of traffic. At the time of writing, the website continued to be up and running.

However, those wishing to move north might find themselves in a tight spot, as Canada is due to cut the number of immigrants it allows next year.

On October 24, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that in 2025, Canada would reduce the number of permanent immigrants from 500,000 to 395,000, a 21 percent decrease.

Explaining these changes, Trudeau said, "We are acting today because of the tumultuous times as we emerged from the pandemic, between addressing labor needs and maintaining population growth, we didn't get the balance quite right."

Federal data shows that in 2023, 97 percent of Canada's population growth was driven by immigration.

Canada's unemployment rate is 6.5 percent, rising to 14 percent for those between the ages of 15 and 24.

Democrat gripes and bellyaches can't even live up to their political rhetoric and talking points.  Democrats aren't going to be embracing Hispanic voters by fleeing north.  Why should Canada become a sanctuary for Democrat migrants?

Canada = A lot more space, universal free health care, free prescription drugs for seniors, considerably lower crime rate, IMO better primary and secondary education, majority rather than electoral votes rule, 20% of the world's fresh water, poutine,  maple syrup, but however, the negatives of having to spell some words with correct British English, getting used to the metric system such as kmh on the roads and hockey is more important than football and basketball.

Surprisingly,  many more Canadians move South than Americans move North, both in raw numbers and in percentage of population.

Mostly retirees, moving south for the climate, and those whose profession provides more opportunity (like my son), but sure as hell not because they prefer the politics.

I know what peat moss is, but if there is some obscure meaning for "peat moss magnates" other than those who might create, store and sell it could someone explain it to me?

Morning..

Australia...all of above for Canada but we have better beaches and sun sand and surf..

Well there a few minor draw backs, somethings, may bite, sting or eat you but they are minor details...

And you will need to convert to Aussie rules, no need for ice hockey here and my favourite Vegemite..

The Great Lakes have some nice beaches, in my memory one at the western end of Lake Ontario where I spent my summers as a kid at my grandmother's summer cottage.  However, Canada's denizens might be bears, wolves, rattlesnakes, poison ivy and poison mushrooms but not much else, as long as you don't irritate a moose or stag.

Geez Buzz..land locked lakes or swamps doesn't qualify for a decent beach...you need rolling surf, decent sand and salt water..

These beaches MAY make the top 20 here..

Sob not my photos..

Well, I've been to some pretty good beaches in my time, the pink sand beaches of Bermuda, the beaches of Eleuthera and Paradise Island in the Bahamas, the beaches of Jamaica and Barbados in the Caribbean, the beaches on both the ocean and gulf sides of Florida, the beaches of Nantucket Island and Provincetown, the black sand beach of the big island of Hawaii and the beautiful ones of Kauai and the iconic Waikiki Beach on Oahu.  As well, the beach at Malaga, Spain, and both the Tel Aviv and Netanya beaches in Israel. All were saltwater beaches, but I grew up with the Lake Ontario freshwater beach that was sandy and although the breakers were not anything a surfer could use, they were big enough for me.  Crystal Beach was on the north shore of Lake Erie and Burlington Beach was on the western point of Lake Ontario. This is the image of Burlington Beach:

Burlington-Beach.jpg

As you can see it had clean pure sand and you could walk out a long way as it gradually deepened with a sandy bottom.

And this is Crystal Beach on Lake Erie, Ontario.

And by the way, The Great Lakes are not exactly swamps, they are a little bigger than that.

Right on, Sparty On.  I guess those who have only experienced coming out of the water with salt drying on their skin wouldn't know the feeling of being totally refreshed, same as having just taken a shower.

Yep, each have their attractions.    For example, one can drink ours without spending a ton of money filtering salt out of it.

So there’s that ….

Beach weather in the Great Lakes is around 3 months a year, swimming in Lake Superior or Gitchi Gumi as us natives know it in July you will freeze your ass off and some other parts as well.

Ah, but at the beaches I and JR pictured above the water is refreshing and not so cold as to "freeze our ass off".  Besides, we northerners are hardy people - have you never seen anything like this?
