Hegseth on media, Democrats turning on President Biden: He is 'persona non grata'

Former President Barack Obama reprimanded his own former White House physician for criticizing Joe Biden's cognitive health on the 2020 presidential campaign trail, according to a forthcoming book.

In his memoir "Holding the Line: A Lifetime of Defending Democracy and American Values," Rep. Ronny Jackson, R-Texas, writes about a stern email from Obama for then-presidential candidate Biden's "crazy statements and concerning mental gaffes" — a criticism he was uniquely qualified to make having served as the White House physician to Presidents George W. Bush, Obama and Donald Trump.

"Biden was on TV again, making crazy statements and concerning mental gaffes; he didn't know what state he was in or what office he was campaigning for," Jackson recalls of the 2020 campaign season. "He apparently thought at one point that he was running for the Senate and later couldn't remember what state he was campaigning in. This had been going on for months and was getting worse."

For years, the media had accused Trump of being mentally unwell, and in 2018 many commentators mocked Jackson for saying that a cognitive evaluation Trump had taken showed he was in "excellent" mental shape and "had absolutely no cognitive or mental issues whatsoever."

WHITE HOUSE PRESS SECY LAUGHS OFF QUESTION ABOUT BIDEN'S HEALTH: 'NOT A QUESTION WE SHOULD BE ASKING'

"Trump never made crazy statements like the ones Biden was making almost every day," Jackson writes in his book, "but these people were jumping up and down: 'He's not fit to be president; he needs a cognitive test!'"

In 2020, when Jackson himself was running for Congress, the media's lack of attention to Biden's cognitive frailty bothered him greatly. He retweeted a video of Biden's "latest cognitive misadventure" with the message: "Remember the cognitive test that I gave @realDonaldTrump? The one he aced! Sounds like somebody else might need some testing done!! Scary!!"

Within 20 minutes of that tweet, Jackson received a "scathing" email from President Obama.

"I have made a point of not commenting on your service in my successor's administration and have always spoken highly of you both in public and in private. You always served me and my family well, and I have considered you not only a fine doctor and service member but also a friend," Obama wrote in the email.

REPUBLICANS URGE BIDEN TO TAKE COGNITIVE TEST, SAY HIS 'MENTAL DECLINE' HAS 'BECOME MORE APPARENT'

"That's why I have to express my disappointment at the cheap shot you took at Joe Biden via Twitter. It was unprofessional and beneath the office that you once held. It was also disrespectful to me and the many friends you had in our administration. You were the personal physician to the President of the United States as well as an admiral in the U.S. Navy. I expect better, and I hope upon reflection that you will expect more of yourself in the future," Obama told Jackson.

Surprised and flustered by the email, Jackson ultimately chose not to respond. Jackson recalls considering whether to call the former president, but a friend of his, radio host and conservative commentator Dan Bongino, reminded him that Obama did nothing while Jackson was in the midst of a Senate confirmation fight to be Trump's secretary for the Department of Veterans Affairs.

"So, upon reflection, I thought, You know what? Screw that guy!I'm not doing it," Jackson wrote."I just walked away from it, which was the last time I had any contact with [Obama]," Jackson wrote. Obama did not respond to Fox News Digital's request for comment.

"It's awfully ironic now, considering [Biden's mental fitness] is all anyone, including the liberal media, can talk about," Jackson told Fox News Digital.

"Let it be known, as the White House physician for the last three presidents, I was the first to say that we have a serious problem with this man's cognitive demise, and he will not make it four years in office. I've always said there would come a point where it wouldn't be just me talking about it, but his own party, and sadly, that has proven to be the case. Joe Biden's cognitive failures are on full display for the whole world to see," Jackson said.

"Holding the Line," which chronicles Jackson's journey to the White House as a navy physician, his relationships with the three presidents that he served, and his early political career at a time when the political Left was determined to destroy him, comes out on July 26.

That's a statement that still stands today.

the cheap shot you took at Joe Biden

it wasn't a cheap shot.  It's the reality of the condition of this President that many won't admit is a problem.

Feb. 1, 2017:   At remarks celebrating Black History Month, Trump ad-libs that “Frederick Douglass is an example of somebody who’s done an amazing job and is getting recognized more and more, I notice.” The remark, and its present tense phrasing regarding a figure who died in 1895, has never been explained.

Aug. 31, 2018:   At a rally in Tampa, Florida, Trump  makes the case  for voter ID laws by appealing to the ubiquitous use of photo IDs in American life and claims that “if you go out and buy groceries, you need a picture on a card—you need ID.” He would repeat the claim at least twice more.

Sept. 19, 2018:   From the White House lawn, Trump delivers an  analysis  of Hurricane Florence, which killed dozens of people in the Carolinas, as “one of the wettest we’ve ever seen, from the standpoint of water.”

March 6, 2019:   At an American Workforce Policy Advisory Board meeting, the president  calls  Apple CEO Tim Cook “Tim Apple.” The year before, he had  called  Lockheed Martin CEO Marillyn Hewson “Marillyn Lockheed.”

“Airports during the revolutionary war”

July 4, 2019:   Trump   celebrates   the anniversary of the Declaration of Independence by praising how George Washington’s Continental Army “took over airports” during the Revolutionary War.

Sept. 9, 2019:   During what is ostensibly a discussion with reporters about hurricane refugees from the Bahamas, the president begins describing supporters of his who are allegedly already standing in line for an upcoming rally in Fayetteville, North Carolina, going on at some length about how the supporters waiting in line are “ soaking wet .” The weather in Fayetteville at the time is  clear and sunny .

Aug. 4, 2020:   Trump  introduces  Secretary of the Interior David Bernhardt by asserting that Bernhardt is “a man who loves the interior.”

Trump presidency: The dumbest moments of a monumentally stupid time. (slate.com)

That time Trump invented the word “caravan.”

“How about the word ‘caravan?’ Caravan? I think that was one of mine,” he said in February in El Paso, Texas.

-

During his 2016 campaign, Trump confused the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks with the convenience store chain 7/11. Instead of describing al-Qaeda's attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon as 9/11, then-candidate Trump referred to them as "7/11."

-

On August 4, 2019, 24-year-old Connor Stephens Betts carried out a deadly mass shooting in Dayton, Ohio. And when Trump discussed the tragedy during a  speech at the White House  that week, he confused Dayton with another city in Ohio: Toledo.

Trump said, "May God bless the memory of those who perished in Toledo; may God protect them.

-

In  April 2019  — during a meeting with Jens Stoltenberg, secretary-general of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization —  Trump answered questions from reporters and discussed former Special Counsel Robert Mueller and the Russia investigation. And more than once, Trump struggled to use the word "origins" and demanded an investigation of the "oranges" of Mueller's probe.

Trump told reporters, "I hope they now go and take a look at the oranges, the oranges of the investigation, the beginnings of that investigation."

PolitiFact | Biden was gesturing towards his audience, not shaking hands with “thin air”

"After Biden finished his speech today, he turned around and tried to shake hands with thin air and then wandered around looking confused," radio station WDBO   posted   April 14 on Facebook. "Do you fear our president is incapacitated?"

Facebook flagged the post and others like it on its platform in an effort to combat false news and misinformation on its News Feed. (Read more about our   partnership with Facebook .)

The claim also appeared on   YouTube   and Twitter, shared by Republicans like   Sen. Ted Cruz   and   Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene . It even appeared on Instagram, where Snoop Dogg   shared   the video and claim with his followers.

We took a look at those clips and the full videos of Biden’s speech. They don’t add up to the claim that he was trying to shake hands with thin air — different angles show that he was gesturing toward onlookers behind him.

A   C-SPAN video   of Biden’s entire speech shows an angle from Biden’s right side — after he finished speaking at the 53 minute mark, he turned to those gathered to his right behind him and pointed his hand at them as they stood up to applaud. He then turned to his left and did the same to those seated on that side, who also stood and clapped. Biden smiled at both sides before walking down the ramp towards the audience in front of the podium.

Fact check: Truth behind viral video of Joe Biden shaking hands in thin air [truth here] - IBTimes

Fact check: No, Biden didn't shake hands with thin air; wasn't confused [see full clip]

Joe Biden was mocked after the video of US president shaking hands with thin air after a speech went viral. Here's what actually happened.

Twitter was abuzz with US president Joe Biden's viral video, where he appeared to shake hands into thin air. Netizens were puzzled by the president's actions after he delivered a speech at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University in Greensboro. This has become a hot topic of discussion on social media. But here's what went on.

The claim

The viral video shows Biden turning to his right and shaking hands in the air, gesturing a handshake, right after completing his speech at the North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University in Greensboro. The 30-second viral clip then shows the president was alone on stage, with no one to return the pleasantry. There were people in the crowd, but no one approached the president.

The president then does the same gesture to his right and at that point, Biden had been showing his back to the audience. He had paused on the stage for a while, which led people to believe the president appeared confused. This was shortly after Biden had claimed that he served as a "full professor" at the University of Pennsylvania despite never teaching a class at the school. These two things combined,   Biden  was trolled heavily.

"Where are the White House and Biden family handlers whose job it is to make him look good?" Harmeet K Dhillon, former vice chairwoman of the California Republican Party, said in a comment on Twitter. "This is truly bizarre unless they WANT him to look like a dementia patient."

"Joe Biden tries to shake hands with thin air! And this is the man who controls the largest number of nuclear weapons in the world. Think about it," wrote another person.

After Biden finished his speech, he turned around and tried to shake hands with thin air and then wandered around looking confused   pic.twitter.com/ZN00TLdUUo — Washington Free Beacon (@FreeBeacon)   April 14, 2022

Politician Robby Starbuck, who is running for Congress in Tennessee's upcoming Republican primary, remarked: "Oh man. The music makes it 10x worse. This man is unfit to be President. Period."

A Twitter user commented: "No one believes you even the imaginary person whose hand you tried to shake."

Fact check

International Business Times   reviewed the viral clip and found its source to establish context.

The viral video, which is only 30 seconds, is part of a   40-minute speech .   Biden's  speech was about the supply chain crisis and also appeared to press Congress to increase funding for semiconductors production.

Looking at the full video, which was live-streamed by WFMY News 2 on YouTube, gives more clarity. If you fast forward to the end of the video, it becomes clear that Biden wasn't shaking hands with thin air. In fact, he was gesturing at the people on the right and eventually behind him who were cheering. He even gestures toward the crowd on the left side of the dais, but it is covered by a mic stand.

So, no   @JoeBiden   wasn’t shaking some imaginary hand.

He was gesturing at the people on the right and eventually behind him who were cheering.

After reviewing the full footage, IBTimes has arrived at the conclusion that claims about Biden shaking hands with thin air and looking confused are entirely misleading.

It was also disrespectful to me and the many friends you had in our administration. You were the personal physician to the President of the United States as well as an admiral in the U.S. Navy. I expect better , and I hope upon reflection that you will expect more of yourself in the future," Obama told Jackson.

Classic Obama to make Jackson's book about his own egotistical feelings . Too bad his own chief strategist and others disagree with him:

"The presidency is a monstrously taxing job and the stark reality is the president would be closer to 90 than 80 at the end of a second term, and that would be a major issue," Axelrod told the New York Times.

"Democrats need fresh, bold leadership for the 2024 presidential race. That can’t be Biden."" Lawyer and Democratic National Committee member   Shelia Huggins told NYT .

"I need an   equivalent of Ron DeSantis , a Democrat, but not a 70- or 80-year-old — a younger person," Alex Wyshyvanuk, 33, told NYT. "Someone who knows what worked for you in 1980 is not going to work for you in 2022 or 2024."

New York Times columnist Michelle Goldberg wrote on Monday that   President Biden was "too old" to run   for reelection in 2024, adding that he seemed "too worn out and unfocused" when he became president in 2020.

"By the time he finally achieved the office he longed for, he was far past his prime," columnist Michelle Goldberg wrote, adding that many of the crises facing the Biden administration were not his fault. "Nevertheless, I hope he doesn’t run again, because he’s too old."

Goldberg noted a poll conducted by the Times and Siena college, which found that   64% of Democrats   want a different candidate in 2024.

"Those Democrats cite Biden’s age more than any other factor, though job performance is close behind.

Democrats will never let him be the nominee in 2024. Right now he is more toxic than Sanders was.

I doubt we shall see Jim Clyburn giving South Carolina black voters their marching orders to go out and vote for Biden. Barack will be vetoing that move.

True. Biden's handlers (read, Obama people in the current administration) won't let it happen. When the NYT, WaPo and Democrats ditch a famous Democrat, we know that there's a problem.

Biden's cognitive abilities are overly criticized as is pretty much everything in his presidency.    In my opinion, Biden is not as sharp as he was as V.P. and is simply too old to be PotUS, but he is demonstrably NOT the dim-witted senile old man that partisans continue to promote.    A little balance in analysis would be helpful:  consider ALL his statements, not just those he stumbles on.

Now, let's pretend that Biden does degrade to the hyperbolic level expressed by partisans.   If so, the 25th amendment will place Harris as PotUS.

To wit, we all damn well better hope that Biden can complete his presidency.

It is a shame that you a buying the hyperbolic presentation of Biden's flaws, failures and weaknesses.    Partisan opponents are painting Biden as psychologically demented (and worse).  If he is that far gone, and clearly he is not, then the 25th amendment would be invoked and the presidency would transfer to Harris.

If Biden were as some partisans portray him, he would first be 'handled' out of the mainstream.   That would mean no press conferences, no public speeches, etc.  And this can be done only so long before investigations occur so realistically it would fall upon his cabinet or Congress to engage the 25th.

Partisans are so ridiculous in their zeal to combat 'the other side'.    Get a grip.

So a partisan Republican and former white house doctor publicly tweets about Biden's supposed mental health without having actually examined him and claims Biden is making "crazy statements" "almost every day" which is clearly an exaggeration and President Obama privately admonishes him saying he was disappointed at the "cheap shot" he took at Joe Biden via Twitter which it clearly was.

If he was a concerned doctor making a video diagnoses he should have contacted the white house and expressed his concerns. But of course Ronny Jackson is now just a partisan Republican politician using his platform to attack Democrats and the administration clearly out of partisan loyalty more than actual concern with the Presidents health since he defends the slimy piece of shit Trump in the same tweet, but we're all supposed to take him seriously? Come on, only Trump supporters are that fucking gullible.

So you are going to dismiss this doctor as a partisan hack but when Democrats (like Pelosi) are called out for being partisan hacks, that's forbidden?

I say to downplay the opinions of all blind partisans from any political party.

It is irrational to hold that a particular party is always right.  Blind partisanship rots the critical thinking faculties of the mind.

Also, it is irresponsible for a doctor to diagnose someone (especially the PotUS) from afar and then make a public statement questioning the mental health of the PotUS.   If I were qualified to make such a diagnosis, I would communicate my findings privately to those who can investigate.   If I were instead to simply go public then I would know that I am directly harming the PotUS with all the myriad negative side-effects.   Ergo, no way do I find this to be anything but a partisan attack.

Let's put that shoe on another foot ...

And then there's this, from 2016:

In summation, tens of thousands of so-called professionals "diagnosed" Trump without ever examining him in person.

I'm not saying he isn't entitled to his opinion as are the many mental health professionals that have diagnosed Trump from afar as having narcissistic personality disorder. I'm saying I agree with President Obama that it was still a cheap shot and I think President Obama had every right to express his opinion to someone who he knew personally and had respected. This whole seed is supposedly about the Obama private email revelation and I see absolutely nothing wrong with what President Obama wrote.

Now days partisan politicians taking cheap shots at each other is par for the course and no one should really be surprised anymore. I think President Obama was just surprised someone he thought wasn't just your average partisan politician was engaging in such clearly partisan attacks.
