San Franciscohas cleaned up its homelessness in preparation for a visit from Chinese President Xi Jinping scheduled for this week.

The cleanup of the city comes after Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) visited China last month. The cleanup included a power-washing and scrubbing of the city's streets and the removal of most of the city's homeless camps, according to KTVU.

"I know folks are saying, 'Oh, they're just cleaning up this place because all those fancy leaders are coming to town,'" Newsom said on Friday. "That's true, because it's true — but it's also true for months and months and months before APEC, we've been having conversations."

"APEC" refers to the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit, which will host an expected 20,000 CEOs and heads of state in the city this week. San Francisco Mayor London Breed has argued that the conference will bring in almost $53 million, which could revitalize the city's economy.

"Tourism is our business here in San Francisco, and we need to focus on making sure that the tourist dollars still come back," city resident Patrick Rylee said.

Xi's visit to California comes amid rumblings that Newsom could launch a last-minute entry into the 2024 presidential race, as some Democrats have expressed concern that President Joe Biden could not win reelection. Recent polls have shown former President Donald Trump beating Biden in a hypothetical rematch.

Though some have speculated that Newsom is running a shadow campaign for 2024, the California governor has denied that his eyes are on the White House next year, stating it is "time to move on" from the speculation of someone besides Biden being the Democratic nominee.

So he's not cleaning up to help anybody but himself.  I really wish I could say this is surprising.

Just an FYI:

San Francisco has not had a Republican mayor, or in your words "far right wing fascism" mayor since 1956. His name was George Christopher, and he served as mayor from 1956 -1964.

I guess it would be embarrassing for Newsome to show the man who was responsible for China's having eradicated abject poverty in a nation of 1.4 billion people where you do NOT see homeless people, what San Francisco, representing the USA, REALLY looked like:

san_francisco_homeless_tents.jpg

Last number I noticed for the USA was 600,000.

What if Xi Jinping says he wants to see all the areas where the shit infested homeless tents are like in the pictures he has seen?  They probably have them in a truck to put back up when Xi Jinping leaves.

For the land of opportunity where the streets are paved with gold, the land of the free that has the highest rate of incarceration in the world there seems to be a lot of evidence that all those people sleeping under bridges and lined up at the southern border may have been misinformed.  Think of this parallel from the movie Casablanca:

This exchange between Capt. Renault (played with lively humor by Claude Rains) deepens the mystery about Rick and where his allegiance lies. It also gives a little bit of insight into Renault, whose own allegiance is also unclear at this point in the film. We never do find out why Rick really came to Casablanca.
Renault: What in heaven's name brought you to Casablanca?
Rick: My health. I came to Casablanca for the waters.
Renault: The waters? What waters? We're in the desert!
Rick: I was misinformed.

And I urge you to take another look at the movie Vertigo made in 1958 and shot on location in San Fransisco.

Why were the streets of SF so clean then and so filthy now?

It is not the American system which China has tried to imitate that is to blame. The problem came with ideology.

If the film called for tents there would have been tents, and if it did not, and there were tents there, they would have cleared the tents away or else filmed there there were no tents.

China has tried to imitate the American system?  Not likely.

The Industrial Revolution started in Britain, not in America, and as far as China fits in has any other nation developed so fast as China has in the last 40 years.  Frankly, I have no idea why China is included as a developing nation because IMO it's already advanced past a lot of nations that are considered developed.

"The world's leader in emissions pollution & slave labor."

Taking into consideration the population of China is more than 4 times the population of America, I think the emissions pollution caused on a per person basis which is the fair way of calculating it would not come even close to the emissions pollution caused by Americans.

It's a little hypocritical to accuse another country of slave labour when you look at how migrant farm workers are treated in America.

.

.

Modern-Day Slavery

Farm workers are some of the most oppressed workers in the United States. In some cases, they are subject to physical and psychological abuse in the fields. In the worst and most extreme cases, they live in conditions constituting modern-day slavery.

Immigrants and Human Trafficking

Although immigrants are not the only group vulnerable to slavery, they are a population especially at risk.  9 out of 10  people enslaved in the United States are immigrants. Immigrants may be lured to the United States with promises of jobs only to then be forced into servitude. Undocumented immigrants are particularly vulnerable to threats of deportation, arrest, and violence. Those with  H-2A visas  are also vulnerable to abuse and coercion, as employers are able to withhold wages, passports, and identification.

Foreign TV crew robbed while covering APEC summit in San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO   -   A foreign news crew covering the   Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation   summit in   San Francisco   was allegedly robbed while working.

Journalists from a Czech Republic public television, who were in the Bay Area on assignment, were robbed of some of their equipment on Sunday evening while recording near the famed City Lights bookstore, the San Francisco Chronicle   reported.

You're gonna meet some gentle people there

Summertime will be a love-in there

Gentle people with flowers in their hair

I've been to SF many times. The last time also around 30 years ago. My wife and I followed a driving/walking tour that the NY Times recommended. Our relatives, who lived in the suburbs, cautioned us about 2 areas (high crime, drugs, homeless, shootings), so we eliminated them from our tour.

As I'm sure you know, the USA is a huge nation with tens of thousands of places to visit and live in safety, even in areas where citizens are allowed to own and carry those scary guns. (That silly Second Amendment constitutional right to self-defense that many other countries prohibit)
