“A listing of 36 news and opinion articles we found interesting and shared on social media during the past week: Sun, March 17, 2024 thru Sat, March...”
I've seen a lot of erroneous "information" on NT. Some is just out of date, some is intentionally misleading. If you want resources for more accurate information, you can subscribe to SkS.
Pickup Truck Guy: A Brief Psychoanalysis

“Dudes who drive pickup trucks: easy to dunk on, but there is A LOT more going on here ---- some of it hilarious, some of it disturbing. But,...”
I'm not in favor of dictating other people's behavior... because I don't want them dictating mine. If someone wants to behave stupidly, that's their own lookout. But I mind when their stupidity turns into danger and expense for others.
The origin of every US state's name

“This took a lot of research. For almost every state there are multiple stories behind the name, but I've done my best to double and triple-source...”
If I understand correctly, almost all the states' names are of two origins. Either: - Long dead kings that no one remembers... - Native American words and phrases whose meanings we immigrants promptly forgot.
Are Mormons Christians?

I seeded a video from Dan McClellan a few days ago. Someone brought up the fact that Dan is a Mormon, as though that somehow disqualified him. I've watched many of his videos, but have never seen Mormonism intrude on his scholarship. Then this video popped up today. Karma??

“Two sets of vestigial eyes shed light on the arachnids’ evolutionary history”
Truth to tell... this seed is just an excuse for posting a very cool macro photo of a spider. That's always worth doing.
More nice stuff Americans can't have

“Hey! Of course they can't be sold in the US. They aren't monster pick-ups.”
These aren't really on my shopping list. I had a hot hatch many years ago - great fun! We had only a single child, but we had a seven-passenger wagon into which my wife could pack an entire basketball team. The Dacia is a bit small (or maybe I'm a bit big...) The Scenic looks like a great...
The Zone of Interest

“Next door to Auschwitz, a million miles away (Detroit News)Jonathan Glazer’s unforgettable Auschwitz drama is a brutal masterpiece (The Guardian)”
I saw this film a week or ten days ago, and haven't been able to get it out of my mind. I don't know which is more terrifying: the servants' eyes-down obedience or the meeting of high SS officers to plan the next phase of extermination. Here are two reviews that try to grasp the gentle...
There have been five mass extinctions in Earth's history
Via: Outis • Environment/Climate • 11 Comments • 10 months ago
“When did the "Big Five" mass extinctions happen, and what were their causes?”
I've seen several articles lately, indicating a shift in climate-skeptics' positions. They no longer really deny that climate change is happening - they simply do not intend to do anything to stop it... or even limit it. They don't seem to understand the stakes. If we don't act, we're headed...
The Grille Trend that Kills 509 People per Year

“Why are newer pickup trucks killing so many pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists? We set aside politics and emotional attachment to look at the...”
Ryan Kluftinger is Canadian, so he may perhaps be forgiven for imagining that macho male Americans would ever abandon their "fist through the air" pickup grilles for a paltry five hundred lives. What next? Save children's lives by controlling guns? Ridiculous!
