WASHINGTON (AP) — Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis suspended his Republican presidential campaign Sunday on the eve of the New Hampshire primary, ending a White House bid that failed to meet expectations that he would emerge as a serious challenger to former President Donald Trump.

DeSantis announced his decision in a video posted on X, formerly known as Twitter.

The ambitious big-state governor entered the 2024 presidential contest with major advantages in his quest to take on Trump, and early primary polls suggested DeSantis was in a strong position to do just that. He and his allies amassed a political fortune well in excess of $100 million, and he boasted a significant legislative record on issues important to many conservatives, like abortion and the teaching of race and gender issues in schools.

Such advantages did not survive the reality of presidential politics in 2024. From a high-profile announcement that was plagued by technical glitches to constant upheavals to his staff and campaign strategy, DeSantis struggled to find his footing in the primary. He lost the Iowa caucuses — which he had vowed to win — by 30 percentage points to Trump.

And now, DeSantis' political future is in question after suspending his presidential bid after just one voting contest. The 45-year-old is term limited as Florida governor.

You won't have long to wait.  She will be out soon.  Probably this week.

She already said she would support Trump if he is the nominee, even if he is a convicted felon.  That was totally unconscionable.

Agreed.   But I understand her answer from a political perspective.   Politicians cannot succeed by always being truthful.   Our system forces this behavior.

Endorsing Trump would suggest that she was running for a position in his administration.   But given she is the last remaining viable candidate, if she does not endorse Trump she will be cast out like Cheney.

I am glad the "Sleeper" from Florida has exited stage Left!  And if Haley bows out and throws support for Trump, she will prove to be self-serving (over country) too! Of course, Trump will ask them both to "bend the knee" and bow and scrape the ground before him. Because why should he be humble went he can't lose in the GOP with the stuff he uses? Trump puts on full display how MIGHT MAKES RIGHT!

Maybe now, DeSantis can leave Florida liberals alone for a while-since he has 'less' weighing on him to prove now.

DeSantis lost his way early on; Florida hot button issues might be important in blue islands but the rest of the country doesn't care that much.  DeSantis wasn't gaining ground since he announced.

I still think the 2024 election is Nikki Haley's to win or lose.  26 states conduct open primaries and 18 of those do not require any party affiliation.  Now is the time for Haley to pivot toward independents and disenchanted Republicans and Democrats.  Trump can have the far right wing of the Republican Party but that's not enough to win the nomination.  If Haley succeeds in appealing to independents and disenchanted voters then she wins 2024.  Biden can't pivot away from the far left to win and Democrats don't have anyone else.

There is a possibility but it is very slim.   Unless, of course, the polls are completely wrong.

Trouble is, too many people already think Trump is going to be the nominee and are doing the usual 'voting for the expected winner'.

But, I agree, the GOP still has a choice.   They can still get their collective act together and nominate someone decent rather than be stuck with Trump.

They will not do so because they are a dysfunctional mess in 2024, but they could do so.

Well, I think Harris has more than a slim chance at winning the nomination.  Remember Ted Cruz was competitive till near the end of the primaries.  And Haley is certainly more appealing to independents than Ted Cruz.  Haley has a fair chance of winning the nomination without banning Trump.  But it all depends upon how Haley decides to run her campaign.

But, I agree, the GOP still has a choice.   They can still get their collective act together and nominate someone decent rather than be stuck with Trump.

The point I made is that over half the states run open primaries so it's not just the GOP this time.  The unbiased liberal press desperately wants Trump because the pundit class still thinks Biden can beat Trump.  But the unbiased liberal press has been deliberately ignoring independents and disenchanted voters.

Realistically, the GOP is the predominant determiner of their nominee.

But I hope you are correct.   The nation would be far better off with a Haley v Biden matchup.   And even better with a Haley v (strong D candidate).

So far, the "seas part" for Trump) to his friends atknown his antagonists.

Don't the actual party members vote for a leader as we do here?? then it is end of story..one leader, one party..

Only time there is a challenge here is when the leader steps down or can no longer fullfill the position as required...

Much like his disappointing campaign itself, arguably one of the worst in history, DeSantis' video announcing the suspension missed the mark by including an apparently fake Winston Churchill quote.

"Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts," DeSantis wrote in a tweet accompanying his video, attributing the quote to Churchill.

“Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.”- Winston Churchill pic.twitter.com/ECoR8YeiMm

— Ron DeSantis (@RonDeSantis) January 21, 2024

But as many people quickly pointed out, the International Churchill Society debunked the legitimacy of the quote over a decade ago.

"Not only did Churchill never say those words—he never said the similar words more usually attributed to him, which are: 'Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts,'" the society wrote in 2013.

They added that they based the conclusion "on careful research in the canon of fifty million words by and about Churchill, including all of his books, articles, speeches and papers."
