Hard-line Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz plans a vote this week to try and remove Speaker Kevin McCarthy from his role as punishment for McCarthy orchestrating a bipartisan stopgap government funding bill to stave off a shutdown, Gaetz said Sunday.

The Florida lawmaker called himself "relentless" in an interview with ABC "This Week" co-anchor Jonathan Karl.

While Gaetz acknowledged he may not yet have the votes to actually oust McCarthy from the speakership, via a so-called motion to vacate, he said that he could get enough votes before 15 rounds of ballots -- which is how long it took for McCarthy to win the gavel.

Removing McCarthy would essentially halt all legislative business in the House until a replacement is picked. It remains unclear if Gaetz currently has more than a handful of votes for such a dramatic move. McCarthy has dismissed the risk of a vacate motion.

"Bring it," he has said.

On Sunday, Gaetz responded, "Kevin McCarthy's going to get his wish."

This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.

I'm looking forward to laughing my ass off thru the results of the next GOP autopsy in late 2024/early 2025.

"boo hoo hoo, what happened?"

the republican house is starting to look like auditions for a FOX prime time slot...

Yeah, Dems do it quite frequently as well. It is the nature of the beast that is politics in DC.

Gaetz will most likely fail, but he has a valid point.

McCarthy promised to allow members to discuss and vote on each appropriation in a spending bill in the proper order.

The only valid point is that McCarthy did what was best for this country and showed that bi- partisanship can be a good thing.

It wasn't very bipartisan when it came to saving McCarthy's job. I'll bet some democrats wanted to vote for him.

Voting blocs are not bipartisan.

pos mccarthy is still attempting to place the blame on the the democrats for his vacated seat. democrats were right to vote with the maga wackos. you can't make any deals with a two-faced liar like mccarthy.

It will be interesting if McCarthy is ousted. What Republican can step in and effectively deal with reality? - the far right flamethrowers have enough strength to defeat a Republican moderate for speaker, but not enough strength to get one of their own into the position. Any new speaker will have to try and learn from McCarthy's mistakes.

I dont think that anyone who the Republicans might select will be able to practically speaking operate any differently than McCarthy has.

Agreed.  I really doubt he'll be ousted.  But it will put the work of the House on hold.  This is just typical of recent GOP shenanigans - political theater over actually governing.

Fair point.  They did extend government funding for 45 days, but that was practically in spite of themselves.

I don't believe he'll be ousted but I do see the continuing ''three-ring circus'' between factions in the republican party continue. A clown shop worthy of an Oscar.

Hopefully these out of touch far right radicals will be primaried or voted out of office.

Spending and tax cuts are not on the menu at this point.

There is no one to replace him. If they boot him out the House will be leaderless. No one from the maga crowd can get even close to enough support, and they have just enough dumbass members to prevent anyone else from getting the gavel.

Now a group of Republicans are looking to boot Gaetz if an ethics investigation comes back negative. It would take 2/3rds of the House to unseat him, but very few people like at at this point. It's possible.
