It is great to see domestic and international efforts made to hold China accountable and hold them to human rights standards and to protect their people from their own regime and to protect their neighbors from their fascist imperialism.  We can’t make concessions in human rights or regional stability in order to get a Green deal they will never live up to anyway.  Protecting the religious freedom of minority religions and the right to exist free of genocide for ethnic minorities along with the defense of regional democracies is what the free world and America must do.

'Old friends' or not, Biden must get tough on Xi

By Arielle Del Turco , Op-ed Contributor

102782_w_400_264.jpg Chinese President Xi Jinping makes a speech at the celebration of the 95th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, China, July 1, 2016. Reuters/Kim Kyung-Hoon

President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping met via video conference earlier this week for a three-and-a-half-hour discussion. Each leader's opening statements struck a conciliatory tone, pledging to work together.

Yet, given the recent  aggressive  actions of the Chinese government and the persistent human rights abuses within its borders, the conciliatory tone is exactly the problem.

During Monday's overly polite video conference, Xi went as far as to  call Biden "my old friend," a label the White House has since pushed back on. The rest of the meeting, Xi and Biden discussed Taiwan, China's unfair trade and economic practices and how to mitigate the risk of conflict in the future.

According to the  readout of the meeting provided by the White House, Biden raised human rights concerns, specifically highlighting the Chinese government's abuses in Xinjiang, Tibet and Hong Kong. This is a good move by the president. Chinese leaders need to understand that their human rights conditions will affect how other countries treat them. The free world will always be less interested in partnering with bad actors. If a government can't treat its own people with dignity, then it shouldn't be trusted to honor its international commitments or the agreements it makes.

The United States should ensure that the consequence for the Chinese government's bad behavior are put on full display at the 2022 Winter Olympics, scheduled to be held in Beijing less than three months from now. Reports indicate that the Biden administration is weighing its options on how to approach the Olympics in light of China's human rights abuses. The reality is that the Olympics is an international honor for the host nation — one that the Chinese government does not currently deserve.

Unfortunately, it's too late for the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to change the location of the games. But that doesn't mean President Biden and other top-level officials have to show up and hob-knob, acting like the situation in China is fine. Everything isn't fine, especially in the northwest region of Xinjiang, where the U.S. government has officially determined that there is an ongoing genocide taking place against Uyghur Muslims.

Throughout China, Christian house church pastors are  imprisoned  and  intimidated . Christians are  surveilled  when they attend church, cannot  buy Bibles online and minors are prevented from  attending  churches.

The Biden administration is said to be  considering  a diplomatic boycott of the Beijing Olympics. This means no U.S. officials would attend the games, but American athletes could still participate. A diplomatic boycott is a decent compromise that does not punish American athletes and one that the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) has  recommended .

The Biden administration needs to be tough on China. Climate activists and officials who want to cooperate with China on climate change efforts are increasingly resistant to holding China accountable for its human rights abuses. But averting our eyes from these abuses in order to keep the diplomatic peace would be a mistake.

Chinese leaders prove every day that soft rhetoric will not appease them. China needs to be held accountable when it comes to trade, military aggression, bullying at the United Nations and blatant human rights abuses. At the end of the day, polite virtual meetings won't accomplish anything meaningful.

…Biden and Xi’s virtual summit lasted about 3 1/2 hours and covered more than a dozen major topics, the White House said. But the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic that has killed more than 762,000 Americans apparently did not make the list.

A White House release said the men discussed trade, human rights, Afghanistan, Iran, North Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Tibet, Xinjiang, “a free and open Indo-Pacific,” “health security,” “the climate crisis” and “global energy supplies.”

The readout didn’t mention the coronavirus, nor did a subsequent late-night White House background call for reporters.

White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan said Tuesday morning at a Brookings Institution event that Biden and Xi additionally discussed territorial disputes in the South China Sea and “counter-narcotics” issues. China is a top manufacturer of illicit fentanyl responsible for increased US drug overdose deaths.

Asked about “next steps” in the US-China relationship, Sullivan noted questions about the origins of COVID-19. US spy agencies in August  assessed that it’s “plausible”  that the virus leaked from the Wuhan Institute of Virology, but China has refused to cooperate with an independent international investigation.

“When it comes to COVID-19, there are still very real questions about transparency and issues associated with the origins of COVID-19. But we also have to beat this pandemic in the months ahead and that is going to require the US, China and the rest of the international community all working together in a way in which we are trying to vaccinate the world [but] not through extortion,” Sullivan said.

But Sullivan didn’t say if Biden raised the issue during the virtual summit. Psaki recently declined to say if Biden mentioned it during a 90-minute phone call with Xi in September.

Biden convened the summit despite reports that his son Hunter Biden still owns a 10 percent stake in a Chinese investment firm that’s controlled by  state-owned entities . The company, BHR Partners, was formed 12 days after Hunter Biden joined his father aboard Air Force Two for a 2013 trip to Beijing…

There was no mention of boycotting the olympics and  preventing the athletes from participating in them.  The issue was never just with Trump that China has.  It is with all of America, everything we stand for as a nation, and the bulk of the American people instead.

It is bound to have a psychological effect on the athletes, not having their leaders there to cheer for them.  But America is not the only nation where petty politics rises above the universality of sport, the greatest event of mankind that brings all nations together as one.  But CHILDREN go "Nana na na na nah".   Iranian athletes refuse to compete against Israeli ones, and IMO they should be banned from ever competing in the Olympics again and nations that boycott the Olympics for political reasons IMO should be treated the same way.

Do you have any REAL proof, not "witnesses" who are PAID to make anti-Communist anti-China statements that a "genocide" is being carried out in Xinjiang?  Any more proof than you had that China's Houston Consulate was implicit in espionage, after contravening International Protocols and breaking into the Consulate?

I'm sure Biden knows the truth, but can't say it, nor can he reduce the tariffs that are costing American manufacturers and citizens pay excess dollars causing inflation because if he does the Republicans can use their "Soft on China" weapon to try to win at the midterms.  So nice of American politicians to have the welfare of the American people, their constituents, at heart.  Such childish political bullshit goes beyond my comprehension.

I’m sure family and tourists supporting the athletes will travel to support our Olympic team.  They don’t need “dear leaders” to show up in order to perform well.  You will see many American winners wrapping themselves in Old Glory when the games do start.
as to the rest, it’s like I said, your beef is no longer with just Trump but with America as a nation and all the ideas/ ideals it stands for.

I'm surprised you're so sure, considering that you and others here post comments that make China appear to be the "evil empire", "America's number one enemy", and I wouldn't be surprised if they were not already convinced that they would be thrown into concentration camps, beaten, raped, sterilized and forced to pick cotton.

China Reduces Ties with Lithuania in Taiwan Spat

GetFile.aspx?guid=c0103c41-493d-46f4-80e7-277e25ee9dc1&SiteName=Newsmax&maxsidesize=600

China downgraded its diplomatic ties with Lithuania on Sunday, expressing strong dissatisfaction with the Baltic State after Taiwan opened a de facto embassy there, escalating a row that has sucked in Washington.

China views self-ruled and democratically governed Taiwan as its territory with no right to the trappings of a state and has stepped up pressure on countries to downgrade or sever their relations with the island, even non-official ones.

Lithuania expressed regret over China's move but defended its right to expand cooperation with Taiwan, while respecting Beijing's "One China" policy, and said its foreign minister would go to Washington to discuss trade and investment projects.

Taiwan, meanwhile, reported that two Chinese nuclear-capable H-6 bombers had flown to the south of the island on Sunday, part of a pattern of what Taipei views as military harassment designed to pressure the government.

Beijing had already expressed its anger this summer with Lithuania - which has formal relations with China and not Taiwan - after it allowed the island to open an office in the country using the name Taiwan. China recalled its ambassador in August.

Other Taiwan offices in Europe and the United States use the name of the city Taipei, avoiding reference to the island itself. However, the Taiwanese Representative Office in Lithuania finally opened on Thursday.

China's Foreign Ministry said in a brusque statement that Lithuania had ignored China's "solemn stance" and the basic norms of international relations.

Beijing said relations would be downgraded to the level of charge d'affaires, a rung below ambassador.

The move "undermined China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and grossly interfered in China's internal affairs," creating a "bad precedent internationally," it said.

"We urge the Lithuanian side to correct its mistakes immediately and not to underestimate the Chinese people's firm determination and staunch resolve to defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity," China's foreign ministry said.

No matter what Taiwan does, it cannot change the fact that it is part of China, it said.

WASHINGTON VISIT

Lithuania's Prime Minister Ingrida Simonyte said on Sunday that the opening of the representative office, which does not have a formal diplomatic status, should not have come as a surprise to anyone.

"Our government's program says Lithuania wants a more intense economic, cultural and scientific relationship with Taiwan," she said. "I want to emphasize that this step does not mean any conflict or disagreement with the 'One China' policy."

The prime minister of Lithuania's larger EU neighbor Poland said on Sunday that it supported the stance taken by Vilnius.

The European Commission spokesperson said the EU executive "has stood by Lithuania in the face of sustained coercive measures from China" since the summer.

Taiwan says it is an independent country called the Republic of China, its official name, and that the People's Republic of China has never ruled it and has no right to speak for it.

Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council denounced China's "rudeness and arrogance," saying Beijing had no right to comment on something that was not an internal Chinese affair and purely a matter between Taiwan and Lithuania.

Taiwan has been heartened by growing international support in the face of China's military and diplomatic pressure, especially from the United States and some of its allies.…

Kanter is a fugitive in his home country.  He’s a Turkish Muslim but not an Islamist and is too into democracy for the leader of Turkey.  Of course the Uighers in China are ethnic Turks.  He not only defends them but the Tibetans, the people of Hong Kong, and of course his most recent stand on behalf of Taiwan.  This great player clearly sees Communist China for exactly what it is, the greatest threat to rule of law, democracies, human rights, and religious liberty on the face of the earth.

Why aren't these shoes made here?  Because Supply Side Economics is the engine for the obscene profit margins.
