what is the best movie you have watched this year?
I would prefer that you confine your choices to something released either last year or this so it can have a flavor of timeliness, but if you want to dip back into the past that is ok, as long as you watched it again, in full, this year.
Give a few choices if you like.
Note, I have not seen Miss Juneteenth and am not vouching for its quality, but it was chosen as the number one movie of 2020 by Rotten Tomatoes critic votes, so I used it as the seed photo.
I have many of the top movies of the year on my list for watching over the next weeks or couple months, but of the ones I have seen I have three.
Trial Of The Chicago 7
The Outpost
Borat Subsequent Movie
I was glad to see that Maria Bakalova , who plays Borats teenage daughter , is high on the list for a Best Supporting Actress oscar nomination. She is great in this movie.
A lot of similarities between The Outpost and Blackhawk Down. If you liked Blackhawk Down you would probably like The Outpost.
I keep meaning to see it, but war movies are my gf's least favorite kind so it's difficult to find time to watch them.
Hillbilly Eligy was good. I expect it will win awards...
I looked at the releases for 2020 and wasn't surprised how few I have seen.
Call of the Wild was good, not great. The same for The Way Back.
For 2020 I have more to choose from. I'd have to pick Harriet as the best overall and 1917 for best cinematography.
I liked Glass and Shaft too.
The only one I saw at the theater was Downton Abbey with the momma. It was good.
It's been a tough year for movies....
I'd say in no particular order I liked Mulan (Disney+), Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn (Warner Bros) and The Old Guard (Netflix). I wanted to like WW1984 (Warner Bro & HBOMax) but it really wasn't as good as I wanted it to be.
I forgot about The Vast of Night (Amazon Prime) a great sci-fi treat that I recommend. I wrote a review here.
I watched the trailer you put up with your review. It looks good.
It's a great indy film for sure.
I just learned about Wolfwalkers. An animated film on Apple+ I'll have to check out this weekend.
Since I don't go to first run movie theatres I'm limited to watching movies that are at least 3 years old. During the past year there are two movies I particularly liked, both quite different from each other, so I have to consider them of equal preference. Although I watched both of them many times, I never tired of them and would enjoy watching them yet again.
The Accountant (2016) - Ben Affleck is an autistic savant who leads a rather dangerous but fascinating life. The fact that he is autistic may be what really attracted me, because when I was an executive member of the Toronto chapter of an international children's charity we received a testamentary gift of a small farm with a great house located just outside of Toronto, and we turned it into a respite home for autistic children, with professional staff, to allow parents of those children to enjoy short holidays away from what was for them a rather grueling lifestyle, and having spent time there, I got to develop a famiarity with and more knowledgeable understanding of that syndrome.
A Knight's Tale (2001) - Dreams can come true, as William Thatcher (Heath Ledger) was able, contrary to advice that it was impossible, to "change his stars". The movie is unique in that it mixes current music (We Will Rock You, Taking Care of Business, We Are the Champions) with that more fitting to the era of knights jousting, and the mixing in the use of much more current language. As well, the story is one of reaching goals and everything ends up happily.
I watched The Accountant this year as well. I thought it was entertaining and interesting. Good choice.
