WAR MOVIE QUIZ - MOSTLY WW2
WAR MOVIE QUIZ - MOSTLY WW2
PLEASE DO NOT POST YOUR ANSWERS IN A COMMENT, OR YOU WILL RUIN THE QUIZ FOR EVERYONE ELSE. POST THEM IN A PRIVATE NOTE TO ME, BUZZ OF THE ORIENT, AND I WILL REPLY WITH YOUR SCORE AND THE CORRECT ANSWERS.
Don't forget that I am on the other side of the world (of most of you) and I could be asleep when you send your answers, so be patient - I will get to your PN as soon as I can.
It would be wise to read this before trying the quiz....
This time, besides the two image clues, the third clue is that the movie has to be a war movie. Only two of them are other than WW2. As before, in many cases just identifying the images will tell you the title of the movie, but some images may be of an item or scenario that is a primary object or otherwise indicative of the plot or movie name, and you might have to have seen the movie to identify the movie. A few of the questons were included in previous quizzes, but even if so I tried not to use the same image clues, and as usual I don't think any of the image clues are actual screen shots from the movies. I try to use clues that do not make it easy to do a web search, and since this is a test of your movie memory, web searching using web programs that identify movies from clues is cheating.
TAKE NOTE: Since it is not impossible for you to find the actual movie names I will be fairly strict in my scoring, so even if you guess the answer you should check the movie name on the web to make sure it is the full and correct name. For example, you will lose a half mark if you do not say "The" if the movie name starts with that word, or if you make the title two words when it is only one, for example not "Brave Heart", but "Braveheart" Also, do NOT forget punctuation marks if they are part of the title. So just identifying the images does not necessarily mean that you know the name of the movie. The images should be a CLUE to the ACTUAL name of the movie. The correct answer is the name of the ORIGINAL movie, and not the name of a remake or sequel if it differs.
There are some hard ones to guess, and also some very easy ones, so give it a try and NAME THESE MOVIES.
Please number your answers the same as the images.

Okay, let's give war movies a try this time. As usual, some are easy and some are hard. Except for 2 questions, the movies are all about World War 2. PLEASE, PLEASE read the whole introductory information before you try your guesses. Members lost marks for not doing so. And, believe it or not, a person who has never tried my quizzes actually posted answers for the last one in a comment while I was sleeping and fortunately Sandy saw it and deleted his comment. If I could I would post the following in flashing neon lights...
But let's start this quiz off with an army joke that my brother emailed to me.
IS SEX WORK OR PLEASURE?
An Army C.O. was about to start the morning briefing to all the senior staff. While waiting for the coffee machine to finish its brewing, the C.O. decided to pose a question to all assembled. He explained that his wife had been a bit frisky the night before, and therefore he failed to get his usual amount of sound sleep.
He posed the question; "How much of the act of sex is "work," and how much is "pure pleasure"?
A Captain chimed in with a 75-25% in favour of 'work'.
A Lieutenant said it was probably about 50-50%.
A Warrant Officer responded with a 25-75% in favour of 'pleasure', depending upon his state of inebriation at the time.
There being no consensus, the C.O. turned to the only Private in the room who was in charge of making the coffee. What was HIS opinion?
Without any hesitation, the young Private responded, "Sir, it has to be 100% pleasure, Sir."
The C.O.. a little surprised and as you might guess, said "And why is that soldier"?
"Well, Sir, if there was any work involved, the officers would have me doing it for them, Sir"
The room fell silent......God Bless the Privates.
no stalag 17?
wtf?
LOL. Have you any idea how many war movies there are?
yes. yes I do.
Thinking
Still thinking...
Submitted.
and please keep commenting or "bumping
to keep this on the front page if possible
I do send PN notices to those who have participated in the quizzes, and now you're on that list. With so many members who served their country in the military one would think there would be a number who would want to try this quiz, but I guess it's also necessary to be a person who watches and appreciates the movies.
War movies are not really my preference, but, being a WWII disabled Veteran, my Father loved watching WWII and other war movies. When I became his care giver the two years before he walked on, I would sit and watch them with him to keep him company. So I managed to get half of the clues right this time.
Normally, I only get one or two right. So this was a big plus for me to get half of them right.
You always got more than one or two right but yes, you've improved.
Thanks, Buzz. I'm glad that I watched all those War Movies with my Father. Even though I was sort of bored with them, at least some of them stuck with me.
Great Quiz.
One of my uncles was tank driver in North Africa, ended up with Patton, landed in Normandy on DDay
and ended up going all the way to the outskirts of Berlin.
We now recognize that he had a bad case of what is called PTSD.
He picked my Aunts husbands, the dates he didn't scare away or beat the shit out of.
Ended up delivering gasoline at night because he just could not work with many people.
Talked in his sleep incessantly if he was having nightmares or reliving some hellish moments.
My aunt wrote it all down and a few years after his death she tried to write a book.
She ended up selling it to some producer for a handsome fee and royalties.
The royalties never materialized but if you have watched Saving Private Ryan,
Band of Brothers or especially the most recent tank movie Fury
there are scenes straight out of my uncles nightmares.
He never watched or even acknowledged a violent move ever.
He watched sports, he worked til the day he retired, and passed a week later
sitting in his favorite chair, waiting for my aunt to bring him a sandwich.
.
In a twist of fate.
My uncle took in retired police dogs.
Neither he or the dogs like black people
One went through the storm door after a black letter carrier.
The dog had to be "retired", the letter carrier transfered.
A year later, the same thing happened but a better door prevailed.
The two men were not on good terms
until veteran's day rolled around and the new black letter carrier was wearing a vest with his patches and medals
Seems the letter carrier was a Red Baller, a driver on the Red Ball Express
delivering fuel and ammo to forward tank units and infantry until his vehicle was hit.
Like many other drivers, he found a rifle and other stragglers and followed the tanks.
They were in the same areas at the same time and probably ignored each other in the moment.
Now decades later they became best friends sharing basketball, golf and the gym.
CMTSU.
hmmm, seemed too easy. I think that means I got a 7 ... But submitted
LOL. You're too humble.
You should talk to my ex-wife... that is NOT a word she would ever use to describe me. hehe
I know all about having an ex-wife. LOL
You most likely won again...but I think I gave you a run for your money this time. I didn't realize how many war movies I've seen
Not one of my better quizzes. BUMP!
The cheque is in the mail
Yeah... I don't have a clue on more than two of them. I'll try... but I'm sure I'll be in the bottom.
And I'll provide a 3rd hint... number 21 is NOT a WW2 movie clue.
Was that just to bump the article?
These are fun - trying to help keep it on the front page so maybe more people will engage.
Sorry Buzz but I just suck at these.
Guess I am not a very visual person.
You had told me that the only quiz you could be okay with was a Horror movie quiz. I gave you notice when I posted one, and did you play?
I did look at it and try. Still think I would have had about one.
Did you look at the clues after I had closed the quiz and posted the answers, to see how I matched my clues to the movies? That would be a sort of training to understand my method. Most people who try my quiz at first do not get great scores, but they improve as they play more.
I don't think I did. I have to go back and look.
Here is a link to the Horror Movie quiz if you need it:
.
At this point 7 members have posted answers, including two members who did so for the first time. Each of the 20 questions has been answered by someone or other so all of the questions are answerable.
Correction. One I said was new had posted answers to a quiz almost a year and a half ago - I had forgotten.
I knew I would do terrible at this quiz. Oh well.
Well, as I said, war movies aren't everybody's cup of tea. I'm sure there are topics in which you excel.
Yep. Horror, Comedy, and "Rom-coms"
I have now received two complaints that I am too strict in my scoring. Even though I posted the rules of the game in the introduction to every quiz, some still ignore the posted requirement that the name of the movie must be correct. I don't want to have to make decisions as to how much leeway I will allow when the answer given is not perfect, and IMO the only way the quizzes won't deteriorate from everybody making their own interpretations of movie names is to require perfection. When I have seen situations where something I wasn't aware of can lead to a different movie that the clues can identify as well as or better than the one I expected then I have always allowed them.
My analogy is this. If you are playing chess and your opponent decides to move his bishop the same way he can move his queen, would you say okay? If you are playing scrabble and your opponent decides that he wants to spell the word "rule" as "rool" would you be happy about it? My quizzes are games and games have rules. Most participants are satisfied with them. I'm sorry that some are not.
If those who complain about the rules for the Quiz don't want to follow the rules, then they can simply ignore the Quizes and not participate in them.
There will always be some who will complain about anything and every thing. Just ignore them.
One of the ones who complained just sent me a PN apologizing, was very tired and rushed doing the quiz. I was glad to get the apology and of course accepted it. Everything with that person is copacetic now.
Of course you have the right to make the rules any way you want. But the fact that people mildly object to them isnt a big deal.
If someone guesses "Longest Day" instead of "The Longest Day" , lets face it, they have essentially gotten the answer right. They didnt say "Normandy Invasion" or "Battle Of The Bulge", they said a shortened version of the title of the movie. Why nit pick the word "The"? I am not sure that is what the players expect will happen when they agree to play the game. I know that because you made those deductions on my scores a couple times when I put in an extra "the" or left it out in an answer.
None of this is a big deal, or really effects the game, but it is a little understandable as to why people would object.
I remember the first day of some math course as a freshman at university
and the professor handed out the tests by SSN which was in the upper right hand corner.
On the left side of the paper was a blank spot for your name,
I aced the test and received an F
Didn't write my name in the blanks !
He said 2nd chance handing the test back to me.
I wrote my name and handed it back and he changed the grade to D minus.
There were two blank lines separated by a coma
indicating last name first apparently.
He was ancient and did not finish the semester.
Most of us were failing and had to meet the Chair to determine our fate.
I got one hour verbal test and a chance to retake one of the tests at his home.
He & his wife were both Profs at the school and lived across the street.
While I was taking the test their German Shepard kept coming in and bugging me,
finally taking a dump near the door then taking a nap between me and the door.
Both profs came looking for me, initially annoyed that I was taking longer than agreed,
now mortified that no one had walked the dog, so to speak.
I got a B instead of an Incomplete, lol.
Okay, obviously my reasoning for requiring a perfect answer WHEN IT IS AVAILABLE ON THE WEB TO EVERYBODY is insufficient for you. So EXACTLY WHERE DO I DRAW THE LINE BETWEEN A PERFECT ANSWER AND ONE THAT EARNS HALF A POINT INSTEAD OF A FULL ONE. GO AHEAD, LET ME SEE WHAT YOU CONSIDER THE EXACT LIMIT IN EVERY POSSIBLE CASE. I am happy to get suggestions, but discouraged when I get complaints.
Once the quiz is no longer fun then don't bother to play. You bitch every damn time I post a quiz. So YOU spend the hours it takes to prepare them and score them and contact all participants. This time there are participants who got scores of 19 and 17 out of 20 and they didn't bitch about the quiz. If it aggravates you so much that you have to bitch about every one then don't play.,
Since I sent you the answers I can't give you a "second chance". Besides, it would be a little inconvenient for you to come to my home to do it, but even if you wanted to, don't worry, I don't have a pet so you don't have to worry about shit on the floor.
Please don't confuse my little analogy about life's little bits of "unfairness"
with your rules which I admit, I did not get past the first paragraph.....
I play Mahjong daily against no one other than to continue a years long uninterrupted winning streak.
We ( my wife & I ) play against each other and 500,000 other XBOX Solitaire players to see how how we
stack up for the joy of it.
If I have something to complain about,
whether it was the half credit answers or the answers you didn't agree with me on
I will be happy to reply to your PN in private.
The lesson of my little math story was that it did little to alter the trajectory of my life.
Disagreements about an NT quiz in my late 60's matters ?
Really?
I was very happy to get 14 correct from memory without resorting to researching the internet
and would argue a couple of the others answers,
It was fun, the xxxxxxx being the answer I was most proud of getting correct.
Next time ( Hahahaha ) I will answer in a PN if I have something to bitch about.
Have a good day.
Buzz , in your reply to me with the answers, you mentioned that I had neglected to add the proper punctuation mark after one of my answers.
I dont care about that stuff. I dont care if I win or come in first second or third. I fill out the quizzes pretty much in one take or maybe two . I dont check the internet for every one of the 20 answers to make sure I have the exact title and punctuation. And I doubt that I will start.
I do congratulate you on what seems to be the growing popularity of your game.
I think that besides not reading the rest of the introduction, you must not have read this as well.
I deleted what you did. There are others who are yet to post their answers.
That makes 2 of us,
oooops sorry,
Feel free to delete all of my comments as off topic by author if that suits your needs
All I did was delete the name of the movie that was one of the answers. You were one of only three so far who got that one right.
It will be 78 years in a few days that my dad landed at Tarawa, (Betio) Gilbert Islands. In one of the bloodiest battles in Marine Corps history. 1,000 died and another 2,000 wounded in 3 days of fierce fighting. He was awarded his first purple heart (3 total) in that hell.
A Marines, Marine.
Semper Fi, Dad.
Dead Marines at Betio.
If I remember correctly FDR released the first photos to the American public of Tarawa. The nation was shocked at the visual and it brought home how we were fighting for our lives.
I'm sure we all appreciate his service to his country. I know you're quite knowledgeable about wars, so if you happen to also have watched movies about them, why don't you try to answer my quiz?
Just to let everyone know, the battle of Tarawa or any reference to Tarawa has nothing to do with this war movie quiz.
I was in the real thing, Buzz so I don't watch movies about war (s).
I'll take that back, I watched one, ''The Deer Hunter''...First and last.
Okay, understood, got it.
I refused to watch The Deer Hunter also. In fact I won't watch any Vietnam themed movies. They bring back the nightmares. Oddly enough, I don't have a problem with WW II movies. Maybe it was just the proximity for me.
We wouldn't allow my grandfather to watch war movies. He served in Korea. He most certainly had PTSD... somehow he "righted" himself and stopped having nightmares after awhile. I think it was after my uncle, his oldest was born or after my mother, the second oldest was born. He also became one of the volunteer firemen in his city and helped to light off fireworks. I suppose that when it's not a surprise [knowing when they're going to boom] helped somewhat, but I don't know for sure since I never experienced anything like that.
I believe that Tarawa was the first time American war dead had been depicted in US newspapers or magazines during WW2, or it may have been the first time such things were shown in newsreel footage (such as were seen in movie theaters at the time). I cant remember which.
I think the photos of the Tarawa beach appeared in Life magazine.
You are correct. FDR personally made the decision allowing them to be published.
Answers submitted.
There are still 2 days left to submit answers to this quiz. But PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE read and follow the introductory information that contains the rules for the quiz. It only takes another 10 minutes to check and make sure your answers are absolutely correct, so I don't have to make judgement calls on where to draw the line - only a perfect movie title gets a full mark, and ANY ERROR, EVEN SPELLING as long as it is still identifiable as the right movie, will get a half mark.
Ok Buzz, you now got mine, Pretty sure I got most of them wrong and there were two I didn't have a clue about... but anyway Hope I made it in before the close....
Holy smoke!!! A blast from the past. So good to hear from you again. Not closing this off for about another 12 hours . Going to check your answers now. Your submission has set a new participation record for my quizzes - 14 participants.
Participation record for my quizzes has now been broken - FIFTEEN participants. I'm really happy to see that creating them has been a worthwhile endeavour on my part, and I do know that they are considered fun by most of you. Honourable Mention is for the first time a three way tie, scoring 14 are Vic Eldred, Kathleen and devangelical. Congratulations to all
Now, I hope that all of you (and any other member of this site who wants to have a little fun amidst the usual front page rancour, here is a link to the new quiz - Biographical Movies - stories from real people's llves:
