Anybody Watching "The Dropout ?"
Oddly, perhaps, I thought the previous show this was most like was "The Queen's Gambit".
HULU has dropped "The Dropout" an 8 part miniseries about the strange , extremely strange rise and fall of Elizabeth Holmes , the entrepreneur who tried to invent a device that would diagnose dozens of illnesses and medical conditions from a single drop of blood. But the science behind the idea never worked, and as the failures of the technology multiplied, Holmes became more and more obsessed and dishonest. She raised millions of dollars in venture capital , but virtually all of it was based on fraud.
The mini-series combines elements of true crime, dark comedy, and unabated greed as seen in various fictional shows about business over the decades. Actress Amanda Seyfried plays Holmes, and has the burden of being in virtually every scene, much like the lead actress in the Queen's Gambit did. I thought there were similarities between the two, as they were about young women with obsessions and a hint of mental illness, and more than a touch of narcissism, but without a doubt the character in The Queens Gambit is a much nicer and more redeemable person. Elizabeth Holmes borders on evil at times.
The pleasure of the series is in the relentless pace, the oddball lead character, the tension that builds up as her business suffers failure after failure (its almost like a thriller in that regard), and in the social commentary about greed. People who should have seen she was half nuts went along with her scheme for far too long because they thought they were going to make millions off her wacky "invention."
"The Dropout" has gotten great reviews and is seemingly one of the television series of the year.
The first three hours are available on HULU now and the other 5 hours will appear one by one on subsequent Thursdays.

I really enjoyed The Queens Gambit.
Not I, I'm watching the Paralympics - I wonder if anyone else watched the opening ceremony, which was quite a spectacular show.
