Audrey Hepburn - My All-Time Favourite Actress

512

If I were picking whom I thought was the BEST actress of all time, it would be Meryl Streep, because the same as with Paul Muni, she is capable of BECOMING the person she depicts, not just acting as them. You actually lose your recognition of the actual actor or actress and see only the character they represent.  For example, has anyone seen her as Julia Child?  She actually BECAME Julia Child.  A second choice for that would be back to back Oscar winner Louise Rainer.  Let me explain:  Although I think an actor like Gregory Peck is a fine actor, every part he plays is Gregory Peck himself, always the same, whether it was in Roman Holiday or To Kill a Mockingbird or Gentleman’s Agreement and the same with John Wayne or Jimmy Stewart or Gary Cooper or most others.  However, Meryl Streep is not my "favourite".

I chose Audrey Hepburn because I enjoy watching her perform.  I am attracted to her pixieish petite beauty, her voice and how well she carries the scene she is in. Besides, she’s certainly not a BAD actor, as proven by the many awards she obtained for her acting.  She was beautiful even in her early 60's.  I sat close to her in person a year or two before her death when she was awarded Variety Club International's Humanitarian Award for her humanitarian efforts of helping the disadvantaged children of the world during a convention of that children's charity in New York City.

From Wikipedia:

Audrey Hepburn  (born  Audrey Kathleen Ruston ; 4 May 1929 – 20 January 1993) was a British actress and humanitarian. Recognised as both a film and fashion icon, Hepburn was active during Hollyw ood 's Golden Age . She was ranked by the  American Film Institute  as the third  greatest female screen legend  in the history of American cinema  and has been placed in the  International Best Dressed List  Hall of Fame. She is regarded by many to be the most naturally beautiful woman of all time.

She shot to stardom after playing the lead role in  Roman Holiday  (1953), for which she was the first actress to win an  Academy Award , a  Golden Globe Award , and a  BAFTA Award  for a single performance. That same year, Hepburn won a  Tony Award  for  Best Lead Actress in a Play  for her performance in  Ondine . She went on to star in a number of successful films, such as  Sabrina  (1954),  The Nun's Story  (1959),  Breakfast at Tiffany's  (1961),  Charade  (1963),  My Fair Lady  (1964), and  Wait Until Dark  (1967), for which she received an Academy Award, Golden Globe, and BAFTA nominations. Hepburn won three BAFTA Awards for  Best British Actress in a Leading Role . In recognition of her film career, she was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award from BAFTA, the  Golden Globe Cecil B. DeMille Award , the  Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award , and the  Special Tony Award . She remains one of only 15 people who have won  Academy, Emmy, Grammy, and Tony Awards .

I even enjoy reading quotations of things she has said - although I'm not sure whether or not they are from her movie scripts, but I prefer to think that they are originally hers:

Nothing is impossible, the word itself says ‘I’m possible’!

If I’m honest I have to tell you I still read fairy-tales and I like them best of all.

The best thing to hold onto in life is each other.

You can tell more about a person by what he says about others than you can by what others say about him.

Let’s face it, a nice creamy chocolate cake does a lot for a lot of people; it does for me

I heard a definition once: Happiness is health and a short memory! I wish I’d invented it, because it is very true.

You can always tell what kind of a person a man really thinks you are by the earrings he gives you.

Everything I learned I learned from the movies.  (Buzz note:  I know I learned a lot from the movies.)

On the one hand maybe I’ve remained infantile, while on the other I matured quickly, because at a young age I was very aware of suffering and fear.  (Buzz note: Much of her childhood and early youth were spent in Holland when it was occupied by the Nazis.)

Some people dream of having a big swimming pool. With me, it’s closets.

There is one difference between a long life and a great dinner; in the dinner, the sweet things come last.

Here are screenshots from some of the movies in which she performed that I have watched:

Please post a comment about whom you would choose as your favourite actress, and something about WHY you chose her.  If you do not add a photo, I will add to your comment a screenshot photo of her  if you have indicated which movie you liked her in, or just a good photo o f her if you don't mention a movie.

Not long after I decided not to join other groups, there she is, Audrey Hepburn.

Of course Audrey Hepburn and of course Roman Holiday.

The odd thing is, I do not know how to assess her acting skills. I get drawn into her and really don't get much else out of the movie. Maybe that is my assessment.

When watching her, I think of a bbq and picnic on a warm evening on grass, under a tree, while overlooking a lake or such.

Movie? Bahhh, Picnic with Audrey Hepburn, there you go.
