Visions of the future

Most likely you have all heard of the new manufacturing process called 3-D printing . Instead of depending on a large complex assembly line to produce "stuff" this new process can make items one-at-a-time . The results are things that are complex but do not require a large capital investment nor huge lead time to make . The items are more expensive than mass produced items but they can first appear a lot quicker than those made by the standard process .

Depicted here is an item worn by Victoria's Secret model Lindsay Ellingson who succeeds in looking both hot and cold at the same time ...

For those interested in the techical details here is a link to an article :

Short excerpt :

Victoria's Secret pushed the boundaries of fashion last week during its hotly anticipated annual fashion show. The finale featured a one-of-a-kind snowflake ensemble worn by supermodel Lindsay Ellingson that was 3-D printed and dusted with Swarovski crystals.

Ellingson's wings, corset, and headpiece were made from a 3-D printing process called selective laser sintering, or SLS. SLS is an additive manufacturing process, which means that it creates an object layer by layer by using a finely tuned laser to selectively melt a bed of extremely fine powder, which bonds to the previous layer; after a few thousand repetitions, the object is formed. SLS is known for its level of detail and strength over other 3-D printing technologies. In this instance, the material chosen was nylon, and although it looks extremely delicate, it's surprisingly durable and light weight.

Interesting link ...

Researchers hope that new generations of 3D printers can use living human cells to build replacement organs layer by layer especially organs such as livers, hearts and kidneys.

Of the 3 organs I expect that kidneys would be easier to achieve than the other 2 ... although kidneys will also not be simple to make .

Hmmmm...........not so far off from the Star Trek replicator. Maybe some day we could 3D print a tasty turkey and an apple pie for Christmas dinner. We are headed in the right direction. My inflatable girlfriend ain't going to be too happy about this, I figure.

This makes me think of Robbie the Robot in the classic sci-fi movie 'Forbidden Planet', who when asked could produce anything in 3D. In fact, if I remember correctly, he even produced booze.

Here is news that "they've successfully transplanted kidneys grown in a lab into actual rats,"

This did not involve 3D printing but apparently there are other plans which involve forming a 3-D plastic substrate on which organ cells can be grown ...

...if I remember correctly, he even produced booze...

"Four-hundred and eighty pints... as you requested. Total: 60 gallons." (Robbie to Earl Holliman, "Forbidden Planet")

I understand they are working on laboratory produced meat . Supposedly it as equally nutritious as meat from animals but it is "squishy" in consistency .

As to your inflatable girlfriend , have you tried couples counseling ?

I expect it is the same thing which happens with the programmable talking dildo ...

Here is an actual current non-trivial usage for this technology :

Teen Uses 3D Printer to Make Robotic Prosthetic Arms for $500
...

The pertinent point is that a custom fit is needed for the application . Such a fit cannot easily be accommodated by mass production methods ...

Boy ... other than uses in technical prototyping , applications for this technology are hard to come by . Here is one which can be used to print food for astronauts on long missions.

Pizza in space !

Holy crap ! Watching that operate can make you dizzy ...35.gif

This is old technology like quite old. It is least 15 years old maybe 20. just now starting to reach the public. Believe it was created at Government expense.Should give youan idea where technology is in respectt o public knowledge.

just now starting to reach the public.

That is because the prices for the 3D printers have come down quite a lot in recent years . As a result we can expect to see more applications occurring both beneficial and damaging . There are definitely some problems caused by the widespread availability of these devices .

I would really like to 3-D print up a live copy of Scarlett Johansson.
