Mal takes photos with his cell phone...
When I posted this article last night I was too tired to explain what the images were about... so I came back this morning to add some info.
These images were taken in Madison, WI with my Samsung Note II cell phone (8Mpx). Many of the close images were taken a bit too close, and so came out a little out of focus... Being a stickler for sharp focus, I decided to apply various PS effects to make the images usable... Much to my surprise, I ended up liking many of the images better with the PS effects than I would have if they had been perfectly focused.
The images are from two different venues (actually very close, but also taken on different days). The first group is the Madison Saturday Farmers Market... The very first thing Mal discovers is shown in the first photo... Mal had to sneak in wearing a human suit to get the rest of the photos. The second group was taken at the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art, also known as MMoCA.
Two - Radishes Three - Kohlrabi Four - Kale Five - Gords Six - Sugar Snap Peas Seven - Green Beans Eight - Day Lilies Nine - Gaillardia (Blanket Flower) Ten - Echinacea on the rooftop of the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art (MMoCA) Eleven - The incredibly rare "Screw Eye Flower" (MMoCA) Twelve - A gum guy... (MMoCA) Thirteen - The glum guy's glum friend... (MMoCA) Fourteen - A PVC sculpture (MMoCA) Fifteen - A metal table top with a bit of glinting sunlight... (MMoCA) Sixteen - The Orpheum Theater (as seen from the MMoCA rooftop) Seventeen - The Orpheum Theater sign (PS treatment isolated to face of sign only)

Holy shit, Mal!!! MAGNIFICENT!!! Your cellphone photos are sharper and clearer than my digital camera can produce. Some of your photos make me think of the artwork of Escher, especially the 6th and the 7th but the 14th is almost exactly as Escher would have created. And what did you do to the pea-pods (#6) to get that effect?
Wow Mal, these are great photos.
Hi Buzz,
Thanks for the kudos! Some of those photos were reasonably clear, but others (mostly the close images) were a bit off focus, so I used various treatments to make them usable... I'll look up the effects for number 6 and get back to you...
Thanks Kavika!
Very good cell phone photos. Those little cameras are getting better and better. I googled MMoCA and it looks like a place I would enjoy. Thanks for the photos.
Hi again Buzz,
There is no great magic trick on the snap peas image (#6)... Just PS "Find Edges" (70% opacity with the original image underneath), a B&W filter, and a little touch of brightness adjustment.
The PVC image (#14) has a similar treatment except PS "Glowing Edges" (100% opacity) and some extreme contrast. The Escheresque quality of the shapes is attributable to the sculpture artist.
Great pictures Mal...... Makes me want to take the time to take some pictures.
There are no dogs in Hell.
That's WHY it's hell!!!
Mal,
I love them all, but I have to say that I would love the one that looks like watercolor Lilies. I have a Galaxy 2 note tab... I am going to try some pics with it!
