What's in a name?
There are so many very interesting screen names here and I'm curious as to their origin. Are they nicknames? The name of your favorite pet or character in a movie? Or do you use your real name? Curious minds want to know.Me: GeeGee is the nickname I was given as a child. My special needs sister was never able to pronounce my first name and has always called me GeeGee (the G's are hard, like in goose). The 64 stands for the year I was born. Yes, I'm a mature lady. Your turn!

Perrie is my real name and no my father didn't want a boy. Had I been a boy I was going to be called Paul. My children refer to my mom as Cindy and no her name isn't Cindy or Cynthia. They used to refer to her when they were little as Cinderella, since they thought she looked that pretty and when they got older, they didn't want to call her that in public so they shortened it to Cindy.
WHAT?? I like the story...
Anonymous is my real name but I go by Sixpick. A good friend on this site picked my avatar for me. I chose Sixpick because even though it may look like the top of a flower it is really sixpicks in a circle and since I love music it just seemed like the right thing to do. Some call me Six. Some call me sixpack. I think that is because they relate anything that looks like sixpick to the sixpack they buy ever night. .I don't drink but one or two beers a year or some wine every now and then, although you may think I'm plastered at times.
Wheel was my nickname in high school, my last name is Barrow.
Well...considering I went into mechanical engineering it seems kind of appropriate.
Summer is my real name. Yes, I was born in the Summer (July 4 actually). Not really a story behind my 1st name, other than my parents thought it was pretty. Though my middle name does kind of have a funny story. My middle name was originally going to be Eve, so my name would have been Summer Eve. Well, a certain product came out (Summer's Eve Feminine Hygiene products, haha) - so my parents opted to have my middle name be Lea instead.
I love your name! And the story behind it is wonderful!
I'm a hydrogeologist-- I look for waters for cities and industries, so Dowser just seemed to fit. Yes, i can "dowse" for water, but truly, I use science first!
GeeGee-- I love your name-- That is such a sweet story!
I love it!
I used to collect real names, that were stranger or different.
My Grandma had two friends in her bridge club, who were chiropractors and truly lovely ladies. Both of them lived to be in their 100's. Their names were:
Dr. Eula Ketchum
&
Dr. Eila Killem
Kid you not!!! And one of my best friends lived next door to Mr. Volly Ball. I had a kid in class named Howl Bean. Another one of Grandma's friends was Ophelia Self. When I was teaching, I had two sets of twins, Congoline and Tongoline, and then a boy/girl set named Female/Male-- pronounced Fe-mall-ee, and Mall-ee. The first day of school was so pleasant for them, I'm sure...
I once tried to take over England. The history books call me Charles Edward, but my friends call me Chucky.
What is behind our names,...wow,...we get to talk about ourselves.... ....My favorite subject,... .
I'll bet know one here would ever guess growing up, as a young man the Lone Ranger was and still is my Hero. As a young lad I delivered newspapers and finnally had enough money saved up to join the Lone Ranger fan club. I recieved an autographed picture of the Lone Rangerand Tonto and a plastic silver bullet. Happiest kid in New York city I was.
Then when I went to Vietnam I took the silver bullet with me. It was my good luck piece. My men started to call me LoneRanger and it stuck, LR for short. When I returned from Vietnam I got to meet Clayton Moore in person. I showed him My plastic silver bullet and that night at supper, we exchanged bullets. He took my plastic one and gave me a real silver bullet of his and a mask he had usd on the show. which both still hang on the wall in my war room.
After Vietnam I also added the 01 to the LoneRanger because for me it represents that I was the first Marine during Vietnam to recieve a certain Medal.....
Now lets not forget my dear frind Dowser who also helped me to create my alter ego The Masked Cat,... ...Without her talent the Masked Cat could never have come to life for me....
So be warned all you evil doers,...the Masked Cat will hunt you down.....
I've always loved your name, Summer!
Yeah, it would have been painful.
Oh, and yes, I thought the fireworks and parades were all in celebration of my birthday. It probably didn't help that my parents would say "Summer, let's go to your birthday party!!" as we were headed to the fireworks display. hehe
Ah, thanks
This is my real name. I try not to hide. Our family name used to be Petersen, but too many Danes had that name. My grandfather bought the name "Lyvang" from the UN.
The name Kim brought me hell when we came to Canada. It was a girls name here. My father told me to laugh about it. So when everyone told me it was a girls name I told them that my parents wanted a girl. My father loved it so much, he told me that in ancient Norse it meant chief. Now if someone could just convince my 6' wife. BTW, I'm barely 5'10"tall. I always look up to her. This May 11th it will be 40 years married.
My name's Grump, but I really not all that grumpy.
I have always been curious about the names I see here, too, GG! It is hard for me to pick a favorite because they are so unique and interesting, each in its own way. Look at Grump, for instance - I used to think he was a woman until I learned otherwise, lol. Then there's Dowser - I mean, do you know another Dowser? Of course, Einsteinian Insanity - I mean, suits him perfectly! There was a NaughtyNumberNine on the vine that I found hilarious. Oh, 1984, Wasn't - come on, don't tell me he isn't creative! And there are so many others, I couldn't even come close to counting them!
Never have I met a man named Shirley. Wow. I have met male Dana's and even a male Julie (I think his given name was Julius), but Shirley is a new one for me.
One of the nuns I had in elementary school was Sister Mary Harold. We giggled a bit over it behind her back. Not nice, I know, but she was a mean old hag and deserved it.
Ya, my last name is mostly z's, c's, and k's. Folks take one look at my name and get a glassy eyed look of confusion.
As my daughter was growing up, I was always Mrs. Hanna's Mom to the kids in her class, because none of them could pronounce it.
My husband's parents are very solid Polish stock and the best people in the world. I was very lucky to get such wonderful in-laws.
Now when someone says I'm acting like a grump, I say, "thank you -- what a nice compliment!"
I'm very pleased to meet you, Khah-T-KHAH. Were you Gunny here before you were Catka? I'm still trying to learn all the players.
I've given up trying to keep track of all of Mike's screen names. It's like playing "Where's Waldo" trying to figure out his most current persona.
So - is Neetu your given name? Or is it the name of some wondrous goddess of morning sunrises?
Oh, my! ((giggle)) Snort!!! I sure hope he goes by Richard or Rich. That's just wrong. What were his parents thinking???
And what about his wife? She's Mrs. Dick Sucker. Oh, my, gosh!!! Heeeeheee. I'm sorry (wiping eyes), I couldn't marry someone with that name -- or he'd have to take my name.
Years ago, when my boss bought me my first computer for Christmas back in 1995(so I could work at home, LOL...I didn't figure that out until much later!) he had to set up an email address for me and pick a name.
My two dogs at the time were the love of my life, Merle (my avatar) and my female rescue dog Lizard. He couldn't spell Lizard (and thank heavens, he couldn't spell Lizziedoodle, which is what we called her), so he picked the name MerleLiz. I've used it ever since.
Both my dear old dogs are gone now, but I'll never change my screen name, or my avatar...the avatar was my favorite picture of Merle, and my husband had his portrait painted from that picture, it's hanging over the fireplace with his last leash draped over it.
I've used the name for so long, that people on other forums whom I have actually met in person, call me MerleLiz anyway, even though they know my realname!
GeeGee, here is a mouthful of a name...Animikee Zaagijiwan, it's my name in Ojibwe, and in Metis language (Michif), I am named Chimitig..
Sorry, but I can't tell you what they mean. Like Catka, I'm on the run from the BIA.
She didn't have a name when we got her, Lizzie adopted us. I don't know why she picked our house, but she showed up one day, scrawny, bleeding from what looked like a recent dog fight and very suspicious and wary. If we approached her, she growled and walked away. She took up residence under my husband's old pickup that he uses to haul hay...and didn't leave. I asked my husband to please call animal control, she was scary looking and I didn't want her coming into contact with my Merle!
Well...he didn't. And I came home from the store a few days later and there she was again. She laid there watching me carry groceries in, didn't move. I took a step towards her, she growled again. Then...as I was carrying the last bags upstairs, she whined. Just one soft little whine.
I couldn't let her starve...I didn't want her, but she was so thin...and her ears were covered with ticks, she'd had puppies not too long before, judging from the way her teats were hanging, and I decided I had to feed her. I filled a bowl with dog chow, carried it out and as soon as I walked towards her, she moved away, growling. So I sat the food down and said "Here, you want it, there it is!" I went back in and thought about water, it was blazing hot as only Georgia can be, so I filled a bowl of water and walked back out to the truck. The food bowl was empty and she was gone. As I bent over to set the water down, she came charging out from under the pickup truck, and I just had time to think "How ironic, I'm about to be killed by a dog", when she leapt on me, wrapped her front paws around me and cried, and cried and cried. "You fed me, you fed me, oh, thank you, thank you...I'm your dog now."
There was a Taco Bell commercial about that time with the Taco Bell Chihuahua setting a trap andcalling Godzilla "Here, lizard, lizard, lizard!" Then Godzilla shows up and he says "I theenk I need a bigger box!"
Well, the next day when I got home, I didn't see her. So of course, being the idiot that I am, I called her, and I don't know why, but I said "Here, lizard, lizard, lizard" and here she came, barrelling out of the woods behind the house to wrap her paws around my waist again and lick me, wagging her nub of a tail as hard as she could. So...Lizard became her name.
I had her 14 years...lost her last Christmas to cancer and old age. But "Lizard" didn't really fit her personality, so she became Lizziedoodle. Sweetest, most loving dog...she was a fiercely protectiveguard dog, but she adored us, and never once growled at me again!
What a beautiful story! I'm so glad that Lizziedoodle found you!
(((((((((Merleliz)))))))))))
I knew a Shirley that was a man-- he was a band director. And my poor father had a really bad "female" sounding name-- Ronda. Everybody called him Bud.
His dad's name was Ronda, so it was a name passed down... He used to get invited to join the United Federation of Female Executives all the time and it REALLY pissed him off...
At the same time, my first name, of course, was Marsha, and my middle initial was L., so I continually received letters addressed to Marshall. MOST annoying! Even my Shell credit card had Marshall on the front. "Dear Mr. Marshall ----, we so enjoyed meeting you at the convention!"
yeah, I bet they did...
My screen name is Polka-san. The name comes from the character, "Polka" from Trusty Bell: Chopin no Yume, an interactive story. Or Polka14 on Newsvine (Polka plus her age). My avatar is obviously her picture. She is from a Japanese story so the formal term "san" is applied.
I have chosen this character as my representation because I have much in common with her. We are both "death lights" and are misunderstood and often avoided by others. We both have few if any friends and like Polka's life, mine is the search for purpose. However, fantasy is usually better than reality. There are none to declare me to be "Heaven's Mirror" in real life. Sometimes I imagine what it could be like if this world was just a dream and everything in it is simply inside another person's mind. Wouldn't that be incredible?
"If you're conscious of the fact that you're having a dream, and you can actually say that this is just a dream then can you really be sure that it is a dream at all?" - Polka
"Are you sure you can tell the difference between things that can be forgotten right away like letters written in sand and really important things that must never be forgotten like words carved into stone? It's an important distinction to make" - Polka
"The sun brings light, but the dark brings death. And these flowers bloom in darkness. So, darkness is evil, light is good. Whether you want to call them Heaven's Mirror or Death Lights, Frederic [Chopin], that's up to you. But, I guess these days pretty much everyone has taken to calling them Death Lights." - Polka in Heaven's Mirror Forest
Thank you GeeGee, and it is an honor to know you niijii (my friend)
Father's name and a rather famous heretic.
Luther28 (the 28 is a State Secret) and if a birth in 64 makes you a mature lady, then I must be considered a geezer.
The thing I find interesting about names and language is that some people use it as an attack on others. I see it as a bridge to connect with others.
I've been using Cesstra as a pen name and later screen name for years... I honestly am no longer sure where I got it from.
My Mom was going through some old papers and things from when I was a child not too long ago, and Cesstra is on more than a few things. Some of this stuff is from when I was only 8 or so. My family isn't even sure when exactly I started with it. It's one of those, just kind of always has been, things that no one every thought about.
Our current theory is that is was one of my little sisters mispronouncing 'sister' and that I just ran with it. I don't know how I came up with the spelling as starting with a 'C' instead of having it as Sesstra though. More to wonder about I guess. It's not anything close to my actual name in either spelling or sound.
It also has never been a real in life used nickname. I just put on artwork, in journals, in my favorite books, and later on online.
Okay, being the movie buff that I am, I have to relate one of the funniest repartees from the classic movie "Airplane" that went like this:
Rumack : Can you fly this plane, and land it?
Ted Striker : Surely you can't be serious.
Rumack : I am serious... and don't call me Shirley.
Rumack was played by the late great comic actor, Leslie Nielson.
I love these kinds of articles - thanks GeeGee.
Well, Buzz is a nickname I have had since I was about 4 years old. In Kindergarten during WW2 we kids would run around the schoolyard with our arms stretched out sideways pretending we were propeller fighter airplanes, making buzzing sounds. My mother saw me doing that and called me "Buzzy". The name not only stuck, but all my friends and relatives picked it up and called me that. As I got a little older in public school I didn't really like the name, and wanted only to be known by my real name, but once I reached high school I discovered that "Buzzy" was a really cool name so I even had it embroidered on my High School Fraternity jacket. Then I saw "Rebel Without a Cause" wherein the high school hero's name was "Buzz" - the one who raced James Dean and couldn't jump out of his car when it went over a cliff. That did it - and so other than professionally I have been known as "Buzz" ever since.
Eventually I retired from my profession and I moved to China almost 7 years ago to teach English and Western Common Law. Classic movies again were an inspiration, and I always had liked the sound of the words "Lawrence of Arabia", so I called myself "Buzz of the Orient" for the purpose of the internet. Because I posted a lot on Newsvine and now on NewsTalkers, sometimes being somewhat critical of the government here, I decided that I preferred to be anonymous in order for it not to cause me problems.
The avatar is me with my Chinese wife dressed in traditional Chinese ceremonial wedding clothes.
How about the Hogg sisters from Texas, Ima and Ura
I use my Anishinaabe name as bestowed upon me by my Midewigan elder. It means White Mountain. There is a story that goes with that.
I picked strangerthanfiction since that's how I feel my life is sometimes LOL. A lot of time if I try and use my own name it's taken which is strange as I have only ever met two or three people with my real name. Which is Manuela same when I use my cats name Miss Edith, taken....
That is a nice story.
Thank-you Polka.
I don't think I'v ever seen/heard of Trusty Bell: Chopin no Yume. Is it anime or manga?
The story sounds interesting. Do you know a source to find it online?
It is an interactive story but it comes in manga too. You can simply google it and you likely find it easily. The story is different in the manga version though. I recommend buying the interactive story to gain the full experience. It does revolve around music which means the music is very good.
I recommend this music.
There is a C More Butts Building in Portland, Oregon. It was a never ending source of amusement.
Eternal Sonata Opening Cutscene
Eternal Sonata Polka vs Very Very Empty Start at 12:30
See, there is interaction going on. So the story can be a fun experience as well.
I grew up in the '60's pretty much 'living' on the beaches of the West Coast as the stereotypical surfer dude. At that time, one of the biggest rock groups around was the Beach Boys and my screen nick was adopted from one of their songs, Kokomo, which contained a reference to Montego [Bay].
Ironically, 19 years later I found myself driving a Mercury Montego, which I owned for almost 10 years.
