Lots of photos are ruined by excessive contrast leaving some areas overexposed, some underexposed and others somewhere in-between and not capable of saving the whole.
But there is a point where the composition and relative "weights" of light and shadow are complimentary and dramatic.
Hopefully, the above image is one of those.

The clouds in the background almost look like smoke from a fire. Must be the paranoid Californian in me. Great pic!
