Earth & Sky Photo Contest Winners
Auroras, the clouds of the Milky Way and trails of stars shine overhead in the remarkable photos chosen as winners of the 6th International Earth & Sky Photo Contest.
This competition honors photographers who venture out into the night to snap brilliant images featuring views of the sky even as light pollution around the globe threatens to hamper humanitys view of the cosmos.
"The sky above us is an essential part of our nature, a heritage for us and other species on this planet, contest chair Babak Tafreshi, said in a statement . The [contest's] main goal is to present the night sky in this broader context that relates to all of us, while it is also [the astronomer's] laboratory to explore the universe. Perhaps from this perspective we can better preserve the natural night sky and reconnect it with our modern life."
The winners of the contest were chosen from approximately 1,000 entries by a panel of nine judges. People from 54 countries and territories submitted their photos to the competition, according to contest representatives.
Eric Nathan, a photographer living in South Africa and the UK, took the contests winning image. His photo which won the Against the Lights category and was chosen as the overall winner shows trails of stars above South Africas Table Mountain.
The image juxtaposes a moonlit Table Mountain and the star trails above it with the artificial lights of Cape Town, a stack of over 900 30-second exposures, Nathan said in a statement.
Nathan captured his photograph in June 2014.
Russian photographer Lyubov Trifonova took home first prize in the "Beauty of the Night Sky category for her image of the northern lights flowing above a forest in Murmansk, Russia taken in December 2014. The moon and two star clusters can also be spotted in Trifonovas image.

The shot of the Chinese skyline is great, but the natural beauty of the shots of nature and nothing else are fabulous.
OMG! Only Nature can create such beauty. This photographer was so fortunate to be able to photograph these!

You are absolutely correct and the best we can do is capture it on film or recreate it in other mediums.

Makes one pause, to catch one's breath!
Dowser....I totally agree.
I agree with your comment - these truly are absolutely phonomenal. However, Chongqing is my wife's home town and I have been there many times, and published on NT many colourful nightime photos of the city. However, I do agree that the photo of Chongqing above does not compare with the others displayed.
Me too.
Dowser
I cannot add much to that other than to agree completely.
