Abraham Mazlow saw five levels of human need, but in the evolving techno-society two additional basic requirements for the survival and socialization have emerged

LOL It does seem that WiFi and Batteries are a necessity for life! IMO....it's pretty sad.

Yes

My grandchildren (and perhaps my children) would place WIFI must higher on the needs pyramid

Thanks for the feedback

Actually, you do have them in the highest place, since you have them before basic needs. (I used to teach this to my students... when I used to discuss needs vs wants)

It worries me that we communicate so much by electronic means (as I do so myself, right now). But seriously, we are losing social skills, which is very worrisome. I watch people in restaurants who are not talking to each other but texting.... that is really bad.

I misspoke and thank you for the clarification on it.

I was trying to say that they were of paramount importance, sometimes it seems more than eating and sleeping to the two of the grandchildren.

I agree with you on the communication, it drives the grandkids and the kids crazy that grandma's phone does not text and that the only way to talk to her (and she is where favors are asked and requests for things are made) is to talk to her. The fact that I have not had a cell phone since I retired in 2010 is also very strange to them

Thanks for clearing up my mistake on the level of importance

I always appreciate your feedback and perspective

No screens at the table my dear!!!! Should be a simple rule.

With the loss of social skills, comes the loss of civility.

FLY

That is the rule at our house and woe be to he (or she) that violates grandma's rule!

Thanks for the perspective

My siblings keep telling me that I "have " to get texting....I reply, "No I don't" I have a cell phone, but, I only use it for emergencies !!I refuse to have my life run by an electronic leash

Exactly what my wife says

I feel no need to be reachable 24/7 we have voice mail on the home phone and since I am usually home, at the gym or at the local golf course I am not that hard to find

Same story for hats at the table..... I only had to correct one of my daughters boyfriends over the years. The younger daughter either learned from experience, or the guys just didn't wear those funny hats with the bills sewn on backwards around me.

Old school is the best school! I'm sure you're the same way Robert

Old school is the best school!

Hard to argue with that

Good manners, courtesy and respect for others should prevail

lol Funny you mentioned that! When my oldest daughter in high school, a young man came to pick her up to take her out on a date. We always insisted that any "Gentlemen callers' came to the door and was introduced to us. This one young man didn't take his hat off when he came into the house, so I politely asked him to remove it, he did, but 2 minutes later, it was back on his head! I came up behind him and flipped the hat off of his head and told him that I wasn't kidding about the "No hat allowed inside rule". He looked at me in shock! But, he kept the hat off the rest of the time he was in my house!!

Sounds like our house

It also sounds like a situation which would prompt a comment from my grandson or granddaughter about how old fashioned and out of touch we are (under their breath of course) cause in our house no one sasses grandma (not even grandpa)

Smile.gif

I remember one young man who pulled in the driveway and honked the horn for my younger sister, she did not even get off the couch while Dad went out to escort the young man to the house. They dated for a while and he was always very cautious around my Dad.

LOL The same thing happened with the same daughter.A "date" sat in the driveway and honked the horn...she started to walk out of the door and I told her to bring him in to meet us and she gave me crap about it, so I told her if she didn't go out there and bring him in...I WOULD!!!

Well, needless to say ,she reluctantly went out and brought him in to meet us....Grin.gif

Neither of them were real happy with me, but, oh well!!

Grin.gif I remember studying Mazlow back in The Air Force NCO Leadership School. Now days some people would just wither up and die without the last two added ones. My son is an addict. His (are they even called phones anymore) is permanently glued to his left hand. I am not and addict. I spend a bit of time one the home computer, but my mobile phone makes calls, receives calls and even takes pictures, which I can't download to my computer because I did opt for that. Hell the only other thing I use it for is to take with me in case I have to call Triple A with it. Love the caller ID though.

Falls jointly into the social and self esteem category in all likelihood

But not more important than WiFi and batteries

I know hat you mean, when people ask how they are supposed to get hold of me when I am working outside (without a cell phone), I suggest that they come over or call back later. Smile.gif

That would be at the Physical needs level (air, water, shelter, food)
