New Zealanders Were Asked to Design Their National Flag - These are the Results
When the Government asked New Zealanders to come up with new designs for their national flag, it was only going to end one way.
They didnt seizethe chance to have their creativity immortalised in history. They came up with these instead:
1.Southern Kiwi
(Picture: NZG)Designed by: Aku A. from Waikato
Bird actually is kiwi. Is well known icon of our country and people. Also stars are southern cross and blue is pacific ocean. Where were from and how we got here.
2.The Proud Kiwi
(Picture: NZG)Designed by: Spurdo Ebin from Auckland
This flag represents one of our national symbols. The Kiwi bird. The Kiwi is proudly standing in the center of the flag with two white bars on either side representing the Two islands and the Blue in the middle representing the oceans.
3. The Happy NZ Flag
(Picture: NZG)Designed by: Hannah Jackson from Northland
I think it would make a good flag of nz because its yellow and is happy and it would really cheer people up.
4.Four Seasons One Nation
(Picture: NZG)Designed by: Liam Gerrard from Auckland
I have used both traditional and new colours, plus the silver fern and the southern cross. The theme relates to our wild and different weather and natural beauty.
5. Surf
(Picture: NZG)Designed by: David Robinson (Surf silhouette) from Auckland
Suggested by: Martin Eichenberg from Auckland
Life is simply better when you surf. Surfing is an important part of the NZ lifestyle. The flag design is clean, simple and elegant. I like it.
6. The Fast Kiwi
(Picture: NZG)Designed by: Harry Sandwood from Waikato
Its Fast and easy to Draw and its very bold I think Everyone would like it.
7. Woolly or Wont He
(Picture: NZG)Designed by: Michael Tuffin from Manawatu-Wanganui
I am delighted to present a flag that every New Zealander can agree to. It is recognizable globally and represents our green countryside, our clear blue skies, and the sheep doubles as a long white cloud. It also carries forward, tradition with the use of the star in place of the eye.

I am thinking that these are a little different from what the contest organizers thought they would be getting when they started the design the national flag contest

I love them RIO.
Having spent a great deal of time in NZ (business and pleasure) it'sbeautiful country, with great people.
The flag with the sheep brought back this joke to me.
New Zealand, where the men are men, and the sheep are terrified.

Thanks for the feedback
I have heard that joke and I also remember working with ANZAC soldiers who told me that there were more sheep than people in New Zealand
I have never been there but the people are great

Thanks for the feedback
The kiwi is certainly cute, but I am sticking with the sheep
I would hope it was New Zealand children who were asked to draw the flag. None of them look like they were done by an adult. Besides their current flag is nice enough as it is!
A look into the brains of children! VERY interesting RIO!!
The present flag is too similar to the Australian flag. In the 1970s Canada had a flag contest as well. The old flag had the Union Jack in the corner like the NZ one, and on a red background the coat of arms for Canada. You know that the present flag is a red maple leaf on a white background with vertical red bars on each side. I had entered that contest and my concept was the same as that except that the vertical bars were blue, to signify that Canada stretches from sea to sea, the Atlantic to the Pacific, besides the fact that the motto on the Canadian coat of arms is "Ad mare usqua ad mare" (from sea to sea). As you have surely noticed, I lost, but I still thing that my design was superior.
LOL.
Thanks for posting this RIO.
Not only did I get a chuckle from theflag designs that wereoffered but, for some reason, it also brought back found memories ofa great little show called "Flight of the Conchords" that I enjoyed so very much.
Win, Win!

I think you are onto to something
The contest seemed to be geared towards an insight into what the country is and what the flag should reflect
A series of interesting insights in my view
Thanks for the feedback

Nothing wrong with the flag for sure and when I see it, the first thing I think of is Great Britain
Perhaps the contest organizers were looking for insight into what people thought the flag design should reflect about New Zealand

Thanks for the feedback. glad you liked the article and the pictures

Excellent point
There is no mistaking that the maple leaf means Canada!
I always think of the leaf in the middle of all the white as showing the vastness of Canada and the great expanses of snow and ice especially in the winter with the people of Canada in the center of it all.
Thanks for the feedback
