The ghostly radio station that no one claims to run

In the middle of a Russian swampland, not far from the city of St Petersburg, is a rectangular iron gate. Beyond its rusted bars is a collection of radio towers, abandoned buildings and power lines bordered by a dry-stone wall. This sinister location is the focus of a mystery which stretches back to the height of the Cold War.

It is thought to be the headquarters of a radio station, “MDZhB”, that no-one has ever claimed to run. Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, for the last three-and-a-half decades, it’s been broadcasting a dull, monotonous tone. Every few seconds it’s joined by a second sound, like some ghostly ship sounding its foghorn. Then the drone continues.

Oh no steve, that could set off a chain of events that would destroy the earth as we know it.

“Dead Hand” signal; in the event Russia is hit by a nuclear attack, the drone will stop and automatically trigger a retaliation. No questions asked, just total nuclear obliteration on both sides.

I'm rebuilding my bomb shelter.

As you can see I deleted my own post. I have to agree with you, BUT I sure as hell don't like it.

Anytime another nation has a probable advantage like this shit, My first reaction is to take that advantage away ASAP.

I would imagine that we to have a ''dead hand'' in the event of a nuclear attack...

Sadly I don't really believe that any of the super powers have the ability to take an advantage away from an enemy. MAD and Dead Hand will always be with us. Sadly.

Well actually I didn't allow it to degrade. I'm just doing some remodeling, new art work, an upgraded BBQ, that sort of thing. The one good thing is that the red wines should be at it's best by now.

Rotting in a bunker ?

NO Thanks !

We're all gonna die, I'd prefer a quick painless death to watching the world descend into total chaos and toxicity.

I just hope russia has my Coordinates  ...LOL

Geez Steve I won't be rotting in a bunker. It actually quite nice, 5,000 SF, swimming pool, sauna, whirlpool. I like living the high life, no matter how short it is.

Since your new to NT your probably not aware that I'm a ''shape shifter'', yes it's true. I can and do change centuries and galaxies quite often. That way I keep ahead of the usual turmoil on earth.

One of the things I always took comfort in while stationed at Grand Forks AFB was the knowledge that if we ever fired our missiles, I would be completely and painlessly turned to a vapor, if that, within a few minutes. There really is a sort of peace that comes with knowing your are at ground zero.
