A drink with as little as one gram of lemon grass contains enough citral to prompt cancer cells to commit suicide according to new Israeli research.

Cymbopogon citratus

It all  began when researchers at Ben Gurion University of the Negev discovered last year that the lemon aroma in herbs like lemon grass kills cancer cells in vitro, while leaving healthy cells unharmed. Citral is the key component that gives the lemony aroma and taste in several herbal plants such as lemon grass (Cymbopogon citratus), melissa (Melissa officinalis) and verbena (Verbena officinalis.)

According to Ofir, the study found that citral causes cancer cells to “commit suicide: using apoptosis, a mechanism called programmed cell death.” A drink with as little as one gram of lemon grass contains enough citral to prompt the cancer cells to commit suicide in the test tube.

Why does it work? Nobody knows for certain, but the BGU scientists have a theory.“In each cell in our body, there is a genetic program which causes programmed cell death. When something goes wrong, the cells divide with no control and become cancer cells.

In normal cells, when the cell discovers that the control system is not operating correctly – for example, when it recognizes that a cell contains faulty genetic material following cell division – it triggers cell death,” explains Weinstein. “This research may explain the medical benefit of these herbs.”>The success of their research led them to the conclusion that herbs containing citral may be consumed as a preventative measure against certain cancerous cells.

Like many things it isn't whether it works it's the side effects. "one gram of lemon grass contains enough citral to prompt the cancer cells to commit suicide in the test tube" I'm wondering how many other cells commit suicide too. How is it with brain cells? They don't know (I wonder why).

Yes see Telomerase and then see how Apoptosis is activated and when  Like Cd4 T cells and Count by WHO  of 350 or less and the US of A of 200  Go figure!

I have never used Lemon Grass (I have seen it for sale in Whole Foods) , but I've read about apoptosis a few years ago. There are several foods that contain Ellagic Acid which can cause Apoptosis.-- mainly berries and some nuts. (I eat 1 cup of berries and 1-2 Tbl of nuts or seeds every day).

E.A  Yes it is as with more " Actions " in our body " electrochemical " so then anything that ins a way  " triggers "  it can have either a positive or a negative effect, some Allergenic reaction do indeed lead to death when not acted upon almost immediately, the Peanut one has been shown can be  reduced by teaching the Childs immune system to accept it, so in effect many of those " condition " are a failure of the Parents/Community to allow the growing immune system of a Child to develop, and that is by over protection and medication!

Just googled and found this:

10 Foods That Contain Ellagic Acid in Significant Amounts

When we think of foods rich in ellagic acid, we typically think of berries such as raspberries, strawberries, and blackberries. But are there also other good dietary sources of this powerful phenolic compound that has been shown to exert strong anti-cancer and antioxidant activity in test tube and animal studies?

Turns out, also several exotic fruits (such as pomegranate), a few nuts (such as walnuts), and even the   Fistulina hepatica   mushroom contain high levels of ellagic acid (or ellagitannins which can be hydrolyzed into ellagic acid).

Here's a list of 10 good, if not the best, sources of ellagic acid Mother Nature has blessed us with:

There several other foods that are "anti-Cancer" but I believe the mechanisms involved are different. Among the best are the Cruciferous ones (Broccoli, Kale, Brussel Sprouts, Cabbage, etc);  Alliums (Leeks, Onions, Green Onions, Shallots, etc) and Beets.

(Of course these are not total preventatives nor are they total cures... and anyone undergoing any of the "conventional treatments for Cancer should not stop them without consulting a reliable doctor).

BDS MEMBER ALERT: Do NOT use lemongrass to help as a cancer cure. It was discovered and published by ISRAELIS. Otherwise you are nothing more than a hypocrite and traitor to our cause.

Articles like this are scary.  Some people actually believe these methods of treatment will work and forego any medical treatment.

This is what happened to Steve Jobs.  He decided not to have surgery for his pancreatic cancer and treated it with non-conventional methods.  Obviously it was not successful and spread resulting in his death.  If he had opt for the surgery early in his detection, chances are he would be alive today.
