Music, your guilty pleasures
So I was doing some cleaning in storage today and on my way to the dump I was listening to my usual Heavy Metal Station. A song came on that I do not care for and I began flipping through channels. I came across a song I had not heard in a while and had forgotten how good the band and singer were. It was a song not in my usual tastes and it got me to thinking about my tastes in music and the outliers or singers/bands that are my guilty pleasures. I am very much a Metalhead but, as a child I listened to the older Country music Waylon, Willie, Merle and the Man in Black and my musical tastes run strong along those lines. So what are your top three singers/bands that you probably would not admit you like but, secretly enjoy. Mine are the following (with the first the singer/band I heard on the radio today):
1) 10,000 Maniacs (I love me some Natalie Merchant).
2) Culture Club
3) Indigo Girls

I like Michael Jackson's music (at least his work in the 80's) but I am not embarrassed by that. He was amazing back then.
He was amazing back then. But that is more of the kind of thing (I think) the author is looking for.
(Perrie bows her head in shame... she likes ABBA)
Yes.
There are actually several movies or musicals that feature ABBA's music - "Mama Mia" and "Muriel's Wedding".
I saw the musical "Mama Mia" live. At the end the whole audence got up and clapped and sang along with the performers. It was a real "feel good" musical.
To each his(her) own.
Actualluy I wasn't clear-- its not that I like those, but rather I was trying to find some that anyone here might like-- and be embaressed about!
Anyone find that adoring Britney might be a guilty pleasure-- embarressing?
Guilty pleasures-- Justin Beiber?
Wait-- no-- don't want to go there!
How about this-- anyone embarressed by the Marcarena?
That one got a lot of air time. Don't know if anyone was embarrassed by liking it-- but a lot of people were addicted. Although some got really really angry -- it seemed to be everywhere!
Here's one I actually like (in limited doses!:-).
Some people would be embarressed to admit they like this one:
Gangnam Style was the first video to reach 1 billion views!
The story of modern K-Pop is quite fascinating.
Actually I am a big fan of K-pop!
I'm a Toby Keith fan, more now than ever, after he had the gutz to play at Trumps inauguration ceremony !
"Asked about the controversy surrounding artists agreeing to perform at Trump's inauguration, Keith reinforced his support for America, not Trump or the Republican Party. "I don't apologize for performing for our country or military," he said in a statement to Entertainment Weekly . "I performed at events for previous presidents [George W.] Bush and Obama and over 200 shows in Iraq and Afghanistan for the USO."
My guilty music pleasure is Pandora. What a fantastic app. Pick an artist you like and it mixes that and others like it better than you ever could.
i have pretty eclectic tastes but my favorite channels are: Boz Scaggs, UB40, Blues Traveler, Alison Krause and Bob James to name a few. Tough just to pick a few.
(Perrie bows her head in shame... she likes ABBA)
As she well should, like ABBA that is. ABBA was probably the best pop group of all time. They did all kinds of genre's, but the thing they did best was make good music. Too many hits to list, produced byfour super talented people who were all successful before they grouped up. I go all the way back to the big bands, the recently deceased Fats, to rock and roll and rhythm and blues on up to some many of the groups and soloists from 70's, 80's, and 90's. Love classical. Nothing much good has been produced since the turn of the century.
Here's one of my ABBA favorites Tried another computer, the link works.
I saw an oldie show a year ago and saw the Cowsills and they were great. Here is my favorites song
And I either play this series or the sound track when I'm building models.
The Carpenters. A bit sappy, usually, but I always thought Karen Carpenter had one of the best voices in pop music.
H.R. from Bad Brains was a big part of my youth. He’s a legend in the punk rock / reggae genre. The vocals in this song were sung from a DC jail cell.
So Tell us yours!!
Just trying to get something a little lighthearted going.
Metal head, arena rock myself, I cant think of any group I like that I'm "ashamed" to like.
But then again. I've always been a hard rock type person. That's all I really like or listen to.
Okay then. Nothing outside your normal theme, a singer or band that does not fit your musical "mold" so to speak?
Nope not really. I dont listen to a lot of music (Just mainly when I'm drumming along these days) and you're right I put on what I want to jam to.
You metal guys should join BF's metal group.
I feel the same way...I like whatever I like. I'm not really into trying to impress anyone! So I definitely not "ashamed" at my musical tastes (nor am I especially "proud" of what I like either).
My guilty pleasure with music is hearing people I dont know sing great songs.
That is one of my all time favorite songs. It's just beautiful.
Yes it is. I was looking through You Tube, and there are many many performances of that song. I think people love to sing it.
I love this song too. It reminds me of my childhood.
I have to wonder what those two songs are? Could it be Hallelujah? Or maybe A Hard Rain's a Gonna Fall? But it's okay, leave me guessing.
Buzz the first one is Sukiyaki, and the second one is Mr Dieingly Sad, two pop songs from the 60's.
They must have been pretty esoteric. I don't recognize them from their names.
Chaka Khan - What's Going On
I've tried to think of music generally, that I would like but not admit that I do. If I, as a Canadian, can admit that I like to listen to the Battle Hymn of the Republic, especially as sung by the Red Army Chorus, I would probably admit to anything. I'm not afraid to say I don't enjoy heavy metal and I don't think rap is music at all, but then I'm from an older generation.
Are you familiar by any chance with Matisyahu? He uses a combination of styles including rap-- but IMO his music is a kind of Jewish reggae:
In November 2009, NBC used Matisyahu's song "One Day" as background music for their advertisement of the Olympic games
One of his better known songs:
[Verse 1]
Sometimes I lay under the moon
I thank God I'm breathing
And then I pray don't take me soon
I am here for a reason
Sometimes in my tears I drown
But I never let it get me down
So when negativity surrounds
I know some day it'll all turn around
Because
[Hook]
All my life I've been waiting for
I've been praying for
For the people to say
That we don't wanna fight no more
They'll be no more war
And our children will play
One day One day One day
One day One day One day
[Verse 2]
It's not about win or lose
Cause we all lose when they feed on the souls of the innocent
Blood drenched pavement
Keep on moving though the waters stay raging
In this maze you can lose your ways (your way)
It might drive you crazy but don't let it faze you no way
(no way)
Sometimes in my tears I drown
But I never let it get me down
So when negativity surrounds
I know some day it'll all turn around
Because
All my life I've been waiting for
I've been praying for
For the people to say
That we don't wanna fight no more
They'll be no more war
And our children will play
One day One day One day
One day One day One day
All my life I've been waiting for
I've been praying for
For the people to say
That we don't wanna fight no more
They'll be no more war
And our children will play
One day One day One day
One day One day One day
[Verse 3]
One day this all will change
Treat people the same
Stop with the violence
Down with the hate
One day we'll all be free
And proud to be under the same sun
Singing songs of freedom like
Why-ohhhhhhhh
Why-ohhh-ohhh-ohhh
Why-ohhhhh-why-ohhh
All my life I've been waiting for
I've been praying for
For the people to say
That we don't wanna fight no more
They'll be no more war
And our children will play
One day One day One day
One day One day One day
All my life I've been waiting for
I've been praying for
For the people to say
That we don't wanna fight no more
They'll be no more war
And our children will play
One day One day One day
One day One day One day
One day One day One day
One day One day One day
If "One Day" is The way the planet should be. I just played it and really liked not just the music but the video is a real "Pay it Forward" feel good recording.
]
It certainly had a reggae feeling to it. However, I wasn't particular about his frantic hiphop rap stuff.
Great video! (Very different than the one I found on YouTube).
In the future I am also going to look for videos on that site-- Tudoucom
Thinking along the same vein as Buzz the only thing that came to mind was "The Village People".
It's hard to admit out loud but whenever "YMCA" or "Macho Man " or even "In the Navy" happen to come on I'm more likely to turn it up than to turn it off.
I'm sooo ashamed!
LOL. Actually, I DO have one song that fits the title description not only because of the lyrics but because it's hiphop/rap, which I really don't like generally: "Hard Being a Pimp" sung by Terrance Howard in the movie "Hustle and Flow".
Chrous:
You kno its hard out here for a pimp when you tryna get this money for the rent with the calliac and gas money spent would have a whole lot of bitches jumping shift
You kno its hard out here for a pimp when you tryna get the money for the rent with the calliac and gas money spent would have a whole lot of bitches jumping shift
Verse 1:
In my eyes I den seen some crazy thangs in the streets got a couple hoes working on the changes for me
but i gotta keep my game tight like Kobe on game night
like taken from a hoe
doont kno no betta I kno it aint right
done seen people killed
done seen peolpe dealed
done seen people living in poverty with no meals
Its fuck'd up where I live but this is how it is
It maybe new to you but it been like this for years
Its blood sweat tears when it comes down to this shit
I'm tryna get rich before I leave up out this bitch
I'm tryna have thangs but its on for a pimp but I'm praying and hoping to god I don't slip.
Chrous:
You kno its hard out here for a pimp when you tryna get this money for the rent for the calliac and gas money spent would have a whole lot of bitches jumping shift
You kno its hard out here for a pimp when you tryna get the money for the rent for the calliac and gas money spent would have a whole lot of bitches jumping shift
Verse 2:
Man it seems like I'm ducking dodging bullets everyday
Niggas hating on me cuz I got hoes on the tray
But I gottta stay paid
gotta stay above water
Couldnt keep up with my hoes thats when shit got harder
North memphis where im from
I'm seventh streets bound
With niggas all the time end up lost and never found
These girls send me group thang leave a big headache
Im hoping ever night they dont end up being dead with it
Wait I got a snow bunny and a black girl too you pay the right price and they'll do you
Thats th way the game goes gotta keep it strictly pimping
gotta have a hustle tight to make change for these women, yeah
( Yan kno nigga)
You kno its hard out here for a pimp when you tryna get this money for the rent with the calliac and gas money spent would have a whole lot of bitches jumping shift
You kno its hard out here for a pimp when you tryna get the money for the rent with the calliac and gas money spent would have a whole lot of bitches jumping shift
That was copied directly from Metro Lyrics, but it's fitting to use the spelling they do, for words like "chrous" (chorus), "Calliac" (Cadillac), "cuz", "nigga", etc.
I like an amazing variety of music. Sometime I play Gregorian chants as I find them very relaxing. At times I listen to Rock or Bluegrass (Not much regular Country & Western, but I love Bluegrass). Also-- I really love authentic Mississippi Delta Blues.
For doing unpleasant work around the house, to get energized my favourite groups are The Rolling Stones, Donna Summer, Sylvester, or Disco Evita!
Also, at times, Vivaldi.... Bach...
More recently, Boogie Woogie piano/keyboard:
I like all kinds of music so I guess my guilty pleasure would be some bubblegum pop...
Neat little story to go with the Herb Alpert song. He has asked Bert Bacharach if he had any unused songs hanging around and Herb looked around and offered Herb this song. It went on to be his only #1 hit on the Billboard top 100.
Ace of Base. The bubblegum pop of my college days.
Not afraid to admit this given I am a drummer of the 70s.
( Had to mention JT )
Rush because of Neil Peart - the best rock drummer of all time IMO.
Pink Floyd because their songs are timeless. Never tire of hearing Floyd. Plus Nick Mason (their drummer who was not the most technical advanced drummer) provided nearly perfect percussion. Musically, Mason was spot on - all the time.
Dave Matthews Band because Carter Beauford (their drummer) is just flat out amazing. My #2 drummer.
Jethro Tull because Ian Anderson is one clever, imaginative, unique musician. Great lyrics, great (complex) music. (And, yeah, sophisticated percussion.)
So many more, but those are my top 3 (well 4).

Nick Mason doing Time:
That not guilty TIG.. that's great music!!
You have to find something to be ashamed of, LOL!
Locomotive Breath
THE BOMB!
I despise ABBA and Devo and ... so I am at a loss to find music I like that should be embarrassing.
OK how about some bubble gum pop or some lite music?
I like Michael Jackson's music (at least his work in the 80's) but I am not embarrassed by that. He was amazing back then.
Well, I looking for music that will, hopefully, embarass some people here.
How about this?
How about this one-- anyone feel embarrassed by this one?
