In what and where would you like to live?

In what and where would you like to live?

Probably most people are happy where they are, but on the other hand, many have dreams about moving to something different. A big lottery win could open up the possibility of being somewhere else.  This is an opportunity to codify your dream, and for you to let us know what that dream is.  Here are your choices for the type of home you would like, the choices for both urban and rural possibilities, and the landscape that you would want to be in, at, on or near. Check out the options and post a comment with your decision, and if you can, why you made that choice.

Housing:

Single family dwelling

Duplex/Triplex/Attached dwelling

Apartment/Condominium (Lowrise/Highrise)

Buckminster Fuller Geodesic Dome

Mobile Home/RV

Houseboat/Yacht

Tent/Tipi

Location:

Major city

Small city

Farm/Ranch

Landscape (in, at, on or near)

Forest

Now, to get this started, up until I moved to China, I always lived in cities close to lakes, mostly Lake Ontario, and for a while in a second home on a smaller lake in the Haliburton, Ontario, lake district. Except when I was a student, I always lived in detached single family homes in Canada, but in China, I've been living in high rise apartment/condo buildings in big cities, and only for the last year near mountains.  My dream would be to live next to the ocean in a condominium in a smaller city, like Sanya.

Hmmmmm....I'm pretty happy where I am.  A single family home (though pretty big for just me and my dog, though I've been talking with someone about making it into a B&B someday).  I live about a block off the Erie Canal, I would love to live in my house, but in the Adirondacks, on a lake-best of all worlds.  That's not in a town/village or farmland...

I once toyed with the idea of doing a B&B, even bought a book on the subject. What got me interested was staying in B&Bs in the Laurentians in Quebec, in Provincetown, Cape Cod, in England and Wales, at Tanglewood, Mass., and in California. I love making breakfasts of all kinds: banana blueberry pancakes, French toast, hot cereal, eggs and onions, cheese and tomato omelettes, etc etc.

I live in a 1964 Mid-century ranch home.  I just bought it two years ago and have been remodeling it since.  Only have part of the finished basement to complete.  It is my last and third home I have remodeled.  I do love it..backs up to a wooded park.  Feels like I live in the woods though I am in the middle of the city.

I am very happy and comfortable where I am now.  If I did move again, maybe Key West or the tropics somewhere.  Something right on the beach.

Dear Friend Buzz: Mrs. E. is in Israel for the winter.

She flew there in December for an extended family wedding.

She will be home in time for the spring Freedom Festival of Passover (Pesach).

The upstate NY home in which we live now is the domicile in which each of us has lived longer than any other place in which we ever dwelled.

Buying a flat in Kiryat Motzkin, a suburb of Haifa, Israel so she can have her own place in to avoid upstate NY winters would be nice.

Mrs. E. a native Israeli (Tzabarit) grew up in Kiryat Bialik, another suburb of Haifa.

For her, this area is home, and her roots.

Maybe in the next lifetime.

Kavika is correct there is about 800 miles of shoreline, however it only 79 miles long not 200 miles.  Note that it is a reservoir lake not a natural one which is why it has more shoreline than you think.

I assume that a natural lake would have inlets and bays off of it, which would increase the shoreline from one without. I assume also that island shorelines add to the shoreline length.  How is a reservoir lake different than a natural one?

Buzz, here is a link to a map of the lake.

The lake was formed in the mid 1950's when a dam was built on the White river. There are numerous other creeks, streams and rivers that flow into Table Rock, but the White river is the main source.

I can't open a google link, but is this the lake - it straddles Missouri and Arkansas.  If it is, I now understand why it is so long, and why it has so much shoreline.

See the source image

The lake I had a home on, is Gull Lake in the Haliburton District of Ontario. This is an image of that lake, and why I didn't think a lake could have so much shoreline:

See the source image

My place was on the left (west) side shore just to the left of the words "Gull Lake" that you see in the middle of the map.

Actually, the times I spent at my place were probably the best times of my life.

Not long ago I posted a photo-article about my first recent visit to a reservoir about a 20 minute walk from where I live. There are rules, that no swimming or fishing is allowed in it, although it is MUCH MUCH smaller than Table Lake. Notwithstanding the rules I got a photo of someone who WAS swimming in it.   But I don't know what makes Table Lake a reservoir lake (one used for a water supply to local communities) unless because it was created by damming a river.

I'm pretty happy where I am now. I live in a Senior complex of single story apts. There is plenty here to do in the complex with a small market, Dr office, barber and beauty shops, lots of activities and a 9 hole golf course. Lots of open area and two swimming pool and laundry rooms scattered about the area. My apt is just a studio, but, there is only me and my Yoda girl kitty, so not a lot of room is necessary. Being small means less space to clean too.

The grounds are well kept and the landscaping is really lovely. I am a nature lover, and there are lots of trees and birds that make the area nature friendly.

However, wherever I am from this point on is unknown, as time and money comes into play. But, as long as I can be a part of Mother Earth I am happy.

I think I'd like to build it in Oregon or, Washington State along the western side, there are places there that remind me of the Hobbit area in the movies.

A favourite location for hippie communes.  Ever see the movie "Flashback"?

I'd like to live near a lake, in a cabin/house-- I think it would go well with my antiques.  Also more sustainable.  I'd like a nice kitchen, lots of nooks and crannies, a big porch, and room for a garden.  Maybe someday!  thumbs up

At this point (over 100 comments) I want to say that typical of most of my articles I didn't expect it to get more that 6 or 7 comments.  However, the comments, posted by those of us who don't always agree with each other as well as those who do, has been REALLY an entertaining read. I'm happy to have provided a relief to all from the more typical political and religious topics, and being able to have somewhat established that life has more to offer than those two.

Hey! That could be a pretty good place to hide should things get out of hand with North Korea or Pakistan.

I live in a very nice house on a 1000 acre thoroughbred farm.  My closest neighbor is over a mile away.  Back yard is 2 acres fenced.  Love where Ilive!!!!

Aside from that, maybe Yoda’s hut on Dagobah.

Do you grow vegetables and have fruit trees in your back yard?  If I were in your situation, that's what I would do.

No fruit trees, but I do a few Tomatoes and peppers in the backyard.

The big garden is on other side of the farm.

I agree with Buzz. I'd plant fruit trees. I have just under 2 acres and have 4 apples, 2 pear and a self fertilizing plum. Also blueberry and elderberry. If I were in a more moderate climate, I'd plant citrus too. I loved having tangerines and lemons in my back yard in CA. Dwarf varieties let you put quite a few varieties in a pretty small space AND you can plant vegies UNDER the fruit trees.

Here’s the thing, It’s not my house.  We live here as part of my job, I’m a farm manager.  When we moved here, my wife and I agreed to give it 5 years.  It was a fantastic place to raise our sons.....imagine having free reign on 1000 acres as a kid!!!  That was 17 years ago and we are still here.

The backyard has 4 trees;  An oak that shades the patio, hot tub and outdoor kitchen and 3 pines in one corner.  The rest is just turf with an amazing view of the farm.  I don’t really want anything more to obstruct  the view......from the hot tub.....I like my open spaces.

We have 30 Apple trees in another area of the farm.

I have to admit that although I practised an office-bound profession, I once took an aptitude test that indicated that I was best adapted to be a farmer.

That's a lot of apples and a LOT of pruning!

At one of the nurseries I managed, we had 10 heritage apple trees and it took me three years to get them into shape and fruiting again.

On my Great Grandfathers farm in WI, us kids used to go into the woods and collect crab apples for the horses. A ripe crab apple in your pocket would get them to follow you like puppies.
