The River in My Driveway
I took a video of this last night complete with narration, but I can't figure out to embed it in my article. We've had quite a bit of rain here in Central Arkansas over the past few days and the worst of it was yesterday afternoon. Some of the roads I had to travel were covered in water and I got splooshed more than once on the way home.
As for that phrase "turn around, don't drown"?.....I don't listen to it. I drove over lots of ponds last night. One of these days I'm not gonna make it.
It wasn't flooded this morning, but we're still getting rain. Fortunately, we just put in another driveway behind the house and the creek back there wasn't rushing over it.
Driving through moving water isn't very smart Trout. Even though you have a fish name, your not a fish.
If you insist on doing this may I suggest that you purchase one of these amfib vesicles.
I know, I know, and my mom reamed me one day about driving through running water. I'm one of those who thinks "oh...it's not that deep, I can make it." One of these days, I'm not.
But that rushing water was loud! Wish I knew how to post the video
You need a Youtube account. You publish the video there. It can be private and not seen by the public. Once it's published you can click "share" and you will get the link to embed it at NT.
Thanks for the advice. Do I have to pay for a You Tube account?
thanks!
That's bad. I saw some pics from the Erie Canal a day or 2 ago. I've included some below from Lock 9. Be careful in that water-you never know what might be under the water!
Holy cow! That's reminiscent of the Spring Break-up on the Nenana River in Alaska
Absolutely - it could be ice. Those who have not learned to drive in northern climates are not necessarily familiar with what different weather conditions can cause. For example, crossing over a bridge on a freezing day when the warmth of the earth has melted the ice from a highway, but the cold winds under the bridge keep the ice on the bridge frozen, and not checking the car's speed before the bridge will lead to an unwanted surprise.
In Ontario, and I assume from Spikegary's knowledge and location, we learn to drive in all possible weather conditions.
I grew up in Western PA so I know bad winter weather...which is why I stay home.
Texas, too. We needed rain in a desperate way, but some fool forgot to turn off the faucet. The good news? Now, I don't have to scrub so hard to get the somewhat mountainous piles bird crap off of my car. (Note to self: Stop parking under the pecan tree where the birdies like to sit.)
A little acid rain does wonders for bird shit and bug guts, doesn't it?
I can see the coal company PSA now, "A little acid rain is good for your environment!"...
LOL!
Seriously. bug guts come right off the windshield after a good rain. Windshield fluid does squat
Yet ANOTHER glitch. I posted this before and it's gone. So here we go again.
Kavika, your photo has given me the entrance for one of my late best friend's favourite shaggy dog stories:
The Foo Bird - a Story With a Moral
Into the depths of the South American jungles the trio of photographers trekked on their search for the extremely rare endangered Foo Bird. They looked for days until finally they heard in the distance the unique call of the Foo Bird: "Foooo! Foooo!", so they hurried along and finally, sitting high up in a tree they saw it, and took photos of it - the Foo Bird, but while taking their photos the bird unloaded a huge gob of shit that landed on the heads and soaked the hair of the three of them. So they returned to where they had just crossed a river, and two to them scrubbed and washed out their hair, but the third decided it could be healthy for his hair to leave it as is. They then walked back towards their camp, and while doing so a huge python wrapped itself around one of the ones who washed his hair and gobbled him whole. Then a tiger pounced on the other one who washed his hair and tore him to shreds and devoured his flesh. When the python and the tiger saw the one who didn't wash his hair, they slithered and ran (respectively) as far away from that guy as fast as they could, and so the third photographer, the one who did not wash the Foo shit from his hair arrived back at the camp safe and sound.
What is the moral of the story?
If the Foo shits, wear it.
BTW, for videos? Upload it to Youtube, then you can go to embed an image pick the Youtube tab and upload the URL.
Oops, had drafted this up a while ago, got called out of my office.....and came back, hit Post and then saw everyone else had chimed in!
I appreciate you helping me. I did it! Surprisingly easy for a philistine such as myself
I DID IT!!!
Thanks, Pat and Badfish!!!!
good advice
Hey what happened to the video... Trout I told you to stop posting porn along with the flood.. but you never listen
LOL!
I changed the setting from private to public, I hope that helps
That did the trick!!
good deal! Thanks to Pat for the advice
When I click on it, it's says ''this video not available''.....
well....crap.....
you bite your tongue
Those are Hatch chiles not Anaheims
You may have to make it public to post here. Then you can go back to Youtube and make it private again.
Is it not showing up for anyone?
Played for me just fine. Just sayin... Maybe youtube takes a few minutes to actually post it.
Pat you be one smart cookie!
ok...I'll go change it. Thanks for the advice
I enjoyed it
It didn't show up for me, but that's not your fault - I can't open YouTube.
It's working now.
My dear Trout G, take care of yourself and listen to your Mom and NT friends. Mom loves ya and so do we! Don't drive through "ponds" of water—rushing or not! Now, dear lady I have this PSA for you:
How you and the weather doing today, my friend?
I think you got me convinced.
We're drying out today, supposed to be sunny and 63. Thanks for asking!
Oh great! Let the sunshine. Let the sunshine in. The Sun shine in. This little surprise might lift your spirits even higher than the sun!
OK Trout, I posted it for you.
Break out the kayaks!
We would break out our canoes when ever a local creek near me would swell and flood.
Hell of a rush, but definitely, when looking back, it was damn stupid, as many have drowned in this creek named the "Neshaminy" after local Indians I believe.
Ever see the commercials where the News reporter is exclaiming and dramatizing how terrible the flooding is as the guy goes by down the street in a canoe behind them, then steps out in 5 inches of water that almost dampen his shoe laces, well, that's how many of our friends discovered where we were that day, and also my boss at the time, as we whisked by during a local Noon time News cast describing the treachery of a normal sleepy creek, swollen into a raging destroyer and literal killer.
Sorry Kavika and Trout, I've gotta stop "Cuban Fish Storying" around here.
.
Trout, stop driving through covered roads and always be sure you are stocked up
with enough Booze, Food, and "medications" as it appears you are cut off when creek floods. Even though Hellavac ing is fun and cool, it wastes valuable precious time and resource's from Emergency Responders, so turn around and don't drown, and while turning around, if you want, you can do the Hokie Pokey, cause I hear, that's what it's really all about .
Ten-4
= six ?
they probably are. There's a line of storms moving across the South from Texas
You should call them.
I worry more if Trout was their designated Rescue Driver.
All kidding aside, call them so as to make sure they are safe.
Did you go by B F when at Newsvine ?
Well I do recall you, and a few tings you had mentioned lately sort of placed you.
Your comment about working on watercraft and your friends son wrestling.
I also have worked with my hands and been around gyms where working with ones hands and "wrestling" are required .
We both are not fans of grammatically correct.
We don't often agree, but for the record, I am not a liberal gun grabber, and irregardless of our differences, I would certainly only hope your parents are safe and well.
Now, not here, but elsewhere we can debate our differences, and disagree. It's interesting to run into peoples from Newsvine, at least for my self.
Now, I gots drinking to do, Friday Night!
I remember driving through Arkansas, and Ft. Smith being to the far West off 40 Is that where parents reside ?
Nice area as I recall.
Ft Smith is nice. It sits in the foothills of the Boston Mountains (the Ozarks). We took the kids to a couple of bowling tournaments there.
Hope you and Mr. Giggles stay safe out there.
Thank-you. I will stop driving across rushing water.
lol, really?
<snort>
Probably not. My mother isn't around to scold me any more
Please do stop. I would be most distressed to hear that you were involved in some sort of tragedy that could come from ut
Didn't you see that movie "Romancing The Stone"? Remember when Wilder was being swept down white water rapids in a Citron, the look of terror and determination as she cranked the steering wheel back and forth to try to control a car riding the surface of a raging river?
Do you want that to happen to YOU?!!
You could end up on the gulf of Mexico, which isn't a bad trip if that's where you wanted to go, not so much fun if that's where you ended up because you wanted to bull through a fast creek.
Thanks for the chuckle. Mr Giggles gave me what for the other night
Good!
Stay safe Giggles.
thanks!
No worries Trout. You live within dog paddling distance of Wiki Warrior Wonder Wiener, who is certified in fast water rescue...You and Mr. Giggles are safe.
That is just too cute!
What a sweetheart! She can rescue me, any time...
The strangest thing happened on Sunday. I was in bed with the TV on, just listening, and there was a thing on Mysteries at the Museum about the Ojibwe. My ears perked up, but I had just gotten a bit more comfortable, so I didn't watch it. BUT, I listened. I didn't know that the Ojibwe took over Fort Mackinaw (sp?) peacefully and with no injuries during a LaCrosse game. Evidently, the Ojibwe challenged the British soldiers stationed at the fort to a game, and while everyone was outside the fort having a good time, the Ojibwe sneaked and and took over the fort. They negotiated a peaceful 'settlement', but I'm sure that British commander's face was red! The chief was named, phonetically spelled, Manibaylay, and he outsmarted them, but good! I don't remember what artifact was at the museum, but it was a good show, for sure!
Dowser, here is a link to the whole story. Quite interesting as it is sometime called Pontiac's war.
Thank you for the link! I can't wait to visit it! When they said, "Ojibwe", my ears definitely perked up!
Wow! a bit of a different story than that which was depicted on TV-- but I did like the TV version as it praised the leader of the Ojibwe as being very clever! For once. Thanks again for the real story!
Excellent link - thanks.
Always a pleasure to see signs of intelligent discussion on NT.
Wish I'd had the camera with me yesterday. There's a river called the Thornapple south of Grand Rapids and about 15 miles west of here. Just upstream of the 84th Street bridge there's a dam as high as the bridge itself. When I drove across the bridge yesterday, the dam was overflowing and really foaming. My daughter was there this afternoon and said it was worse and that the weather bureau doesn't really expect the dam to be there in the morning. If it goes, it floods into the Grand River, through Grand Rapids and right out to Lake Michigan, with big ice jams to back it up into the flood plain. I expect to see this stuff in April, not usually in February.
This is what my daughter did instead of going outside. She says it's more fun and a lot tastier. Both of those pans were full a half hour ago.
Fresh baked cinnamon buns? OMG - I'm drooling!
Me too. Both pans are gone now. After we finished them, Barb made a pan of brownies. This afternoon, Levi and I worked on them until only two are left. Baked goods don't last long around here.
Great video, Trout, dear! Please be careful!
They, meaning the weather service, is screaming water levels as high as 1997, when it was pretty bad here. But not as bad as 1964, which was 50 year's flood level, nor even as 1/4th as bad as 1937... A lot of Louisville's neighborhoods are closed to traffic, etc. What a mess!
We got some bad storms Saturday evening, but we're drying out until the next round of storms.
It rained and spit and drizzled and flooded here on Saturday, too! Yesterday was quieter, and today, all this is supposed to crest...
Marsha,
My wife talked to her brother over near Lexington this morning. He told her that, while his area wasn't doing bad, Louisville really got hammered. Hope it goes down soon. Try to stay dry.
Thanks, dear Rock! It's pretty bad here. Captain's Quarters, down on the river, is now an inland island, so to speak, and many neighborhoods are cut off... Any place near the river is under water, and I know the water company is having to move people into the pump station in shifts. It will be a mess for some time! Our house is fine, as we're 16' or so above the 500 year flood level, but our basement is inundated, of course. We're being told to stay out of areas where the water is up, and as much as I'd like to go take pictures, to compare to the 1997 pictures I have, I've been good and stayed home. Last time, I rescued a turtle... He was a red slider and so cute! He probably didn't need rescuing, but, just in case, I made sure he could get to 'dry' land...
Matthew had to shelter from a tornado at the college at Murray, so it's bad there, too. I worry about him, but he's fine and there is no need. He said that the walkway they take to class is like a giant bathtub of water... So, he's not happy about it, but will be ok.
Love to all of you!
They found the flood gates and closed them, which is interesting... Back in 1997, they couldn't find them to close. Someone had stolen them and used them as scrap metal. Anyway, the flood gates are closed. This flooding will leave a giant mess...
I saw the pix from Louisville....bad stuff, that!
Cunninghams on Harrods Creek is done in-- I heard that they are not planning on reopening. That's one of our favorite restaurants, so I'm sad. You could go there and sit on the deck and eat really good food and watch the ducks and the boat people... It made for a lovely evening! The flood water has changed color to a point, meaning it is busy dropping its load of silt and mud. We had rain again today, so we're all hoping that it won't send the river back up. UGH. More changes to come, I'm afraid!
We've got a heavy snow warning here....from 7 P.M. to 1 P.M. tomorrow......forecasts are 5-13 inches, blowing, gusting, zero visibility.....I might get lucky and not have to go to work tomorrow.....
High wind warnings here starting this evening. Only a little snow, if any, thank goodness.
I don't mind snow, but I have appointments tomorrow, and don't like to drive in a high wind/snow combo.
Please be careful! No snowmobiling in poor visibility!
Please be careful-- we need you around!
Thanks, Dowser. Stay dry and safe.
