The Top Seven Nuclear War Movies

Scene from the 1984 movie "Threads"
The films that follow are some of the most frightening (and disturbing) movies you'll ever see. They are far more chilling than any gory battle or horror movie, because they show a world which was all too possible. While the threat of nuclear annihilation may have somewhat subsided with the fall of the Soviet Union, if you watch the movies on this list, you'll instantly recall the paranoia and nascent fear of the Cold War. Each of these films that follow are truly excellent war movies, but - be warned - some of them might leave you sleepless. Ranked in order from the least disturbing to the absolutely most harrowing fear-inducing, here are seven films of nuclear apocalypse...

Considering the number of articles recently on the Front Page concerning nuclear weapons this seems to be an appropriate article to post.
Buzz....
Where are "Fail Safe" and "On the Beach"? Both movies made in the 60's during the Cold War.
Yes don, they would belong on the list.
So little interest here - I'll move this to Classic Cinema if anyone wants to comment.
I have Threads, the movie you depict above and the one that the article depicts as the #1, I will post it, but I've got a couple of others in line first.
OMG... I have seen them all!
"Threads" was the worst of the bunch. I was so freaked out after seeing it, I couldn't sleep for days. The childbirth scene it ends with leaves you sick.
"The Day After Tomorrow", was also really good. Not as gritty as Threads. All the others seem like fluff compared to these two in my opinion.
I remember "the Day After Tomorrow" as pure propaganda by the anti US nukes groups. Fortunately peace through strength won out and the cold war was won without going hot.
I followed the link and couldn't get back, so found this on the Classic Cinema group, and commented there. Sorry! I really enjoyed the article!
What was that one about a war game that didn't really happen... Not so much nuclear war and the aftermath, but some kind of game, played with a computer... Any way, I liked that one, too.
Oh, we also enjoyed the TV series Jericho .
I never saw A Boy and his Dog - never would have thought it to be a nuclear war movie.
Dowser: It's a 1983 movie called War Games, with Matthew Broderick, Ally Sheedy and Dabney Coleman. The magic word in the movie is "Joshua".
Seen all of them Buzz. Fail Safe needs to find its way on the list somewhere.
Threads by far was the toughest, and most realistic. Anyone that has been around these weapons knows that they are the true enemy of humanity.
Right, FLY. Fail Safe should have been included. It will forever remain controversial as to whether Truman made the right decision.
Fun show and pitch perfect for its time. Bit of a time capsule now though, and not just because of how young Don Johnson was.
Not sure how all the violence to and degradation of women portrayed in the flick would play these days, but other than that I'd put it up there with "Zardoz" when it comes to thepostpost-apocalyptic, dystopian style movies that came out in the 70's go.
