Philippine president slammed for calling God 'stupid

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine president, notorious for having cursed the pope and world leaders like former U.S. President Barack Obama, has sparked new outrage by calling God "stupid" in Asia's largest Catholic country.

Opposition Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV shot back Monday by describing President Rodrigo Duterte as "one evil man" and his remarks as "very much consistent with the deceitfulness, heartlessness and ruthlessness of his policies." Even some of Duterte's political allies were critical.

A Catholic Bishop, Arturo Bastes, called the president a "madman" and urged Filipinos to pray for an end to Duterte's "blasphemous utterances and dictatorial tendencies."

"Duterte's tirade against God and the Bible reveals again that he is a psychological freak, a psychopath, an abnormal mind who should have not been elected as president of our civilized and Christian nation," Bastes said.

Another bishop, Ruperto Santos, said the president had crossed a line.

Duterte questioned in a televised speech Friday the Biblical story of man's creation and asked why God created Adam and Eve only to allow them to succumb to temptation that destroyed their purity.

"Who is this stupid God? This son of a b***h is then really stupid," said the 73-year-old leader, known for his rambling public statements. "How can you rationalize a God? Do you believe?"

Duterte lamented that Adam and Eve's sin in Christian theology resulted in all the faithful falling from divine grace. "You were not involved but now you're stained with an original sins ... What kind of a religion is that? That's what I can't accept, very stupid proposition," he said.

Sen. Panfilo Lacson, a former national police chief, said he has often backed Duterte's policies, but after the president's utterances against God "to whom I pray every single day and with whom I've found solace and comfort in all my difficult times, I don't even have to think of my choice."

"May my God forgive him and make him atone for all his sins," Lacson said.

Duterte's spokesman defended his remarks, saying the president has the right to express his opinion on religion and cited his previous disclosure that he was once sexually abused as a student by a priest.

Duterte stressed that right in another speech Monday. "Why do you bind me with something very stupid? I was given my own mind by God."

Duterte shocked Filipino Catholics in 2015 when he cursed visiting Pope Francis for having triggered a monstrous traffic in Manila. He later apologized, but has repeatedly lashed out at bishops and the dominant Catholic church, which has criticized his bloody crackdown on illegal drugs.

Obama, who also raised alarm over the drug killings under Duterte, was also a target of the Philippine leader's tongue-lashing. He once said the American leader should "to go to hell."

The former longtime city mayor has repeatedly declared he does not care about human rights and has threatened drug dealers and other criminals with death. He warned he would withdraw the Philippines from the United Nations after its human rights experts called for an independent investigation into extrajudicial killings under his rule. He described the world body as hypocritical for failing to prevent genocides worldwide.

Sounds like Christians are rather fragile even outside the US.

And another staunch Christian rears its ugly head.  There is an obvious difference between drug lord and drug user.  This guy sends out murder squads to take out anyone who has been reported to use drugs.

Sounds like you support death squads and oppose due process.    That's how completely innocent people get killed by vigilantes.    You're asking for a profound abuse of power of the kind exerted during the Spanish Inquisition.     How utterly typical.

It's not that I disagree with this particular opinion, but when 80% of the people you hope to rule forever believe in something, it's not a real good idea to publicly make fun of those beliefs, that tends to alienate and anger people. A lot of people will put up with a lot of grief but when you start hitting their favorite religion, watch out.

So it just seems crazy to me to joke about something that many of his people take very seriously and certainly has caused a lot of hard feelings, when he could have avoided that by shutting his face or speaking about something else.

As for the drug dealers, if they start a fire-fight, blow them away. BUT a little more due process makes sure you are only shooting the right ones and not being mislead by a rumor or a whim into killing someone who wasn't involved, or just to kill people he doesn't like.

E.A SO true, but let do an " Equalizing " Statistic here, Lets take the Numbers of Individuals and Families that Druglords and Pimps are Killing, Mauling, Disfiguring, not only for NOW  but for Generations to come, with the DNA and RNA damage that the Drugs do, so with that in Mind, who is the worst enemy that a " State has to deal with " and how many " Friendly fire " incidents are acceptable?

LOL thanks for the link, had to check it out and of course play with it a little. Any war on drugs seems to be even more difficult than it used to be because the drugs chemistry change slightly (like bath salts) and you could order some very dangerous stuff online from other countries (I don't know if you can still do that.)

I'm just not convinced that it can be or should be fought HIS way which I consider sloppy and dangerous, but he's got the dreaded "dictator's disease" and the first thought of people suffering from "DD" (not to be confused with the other "DD", dead dick) on any problem is to kill people until it's fixed and to hell with collateral damage.

People suffering from DD never believe in god, not by any conclusion they reached by a lot of thought but because to a DD, there can be no greater being then themselves even if they used religion to get to power.

Would like those numbers too, but he's got the human rights people pretty upset which is not a good indicator that those ratios are good. Another symptom of DD is a desire to isolate your country from the rest of the world, and he's ready to withdraw from the U.N. because of it's human rights criticisms.

Just a thought but are the Philippines in a world trade drug crossroads or something? there are other countries they could set up in without having to fight so hard for it. There might be more to this then it seems, all DD's need a good bunch(s) of bad guys to protect the country from.

Here's what I think: The Filipino President just broke faith with his people—deliberately.  Now, this is going to be interesting and harsh: There is no way there will not be sparks flying up in the islands over this! The world is in for a "teachable moment" courtesy of the Filipino people—one way or the other. I pray for peace in the Islands.

The Filipino people are a very industrious people. It is highly probable that such devoted people of Catholic faith (I have seen their religious passion in action) will not accept the cursing of God by their leader as some insignificant event. That being reflected upon, all I can do is watch and see. Very few leaders, if any, over very religious nations, I would imagine, can survive such such an offense.

And yes, our president is a 'nightmare' in the day-time. I find, when I can not stay sleep at night, I am 'drawn' to turning the television on and usually Trump has tweeted some insult during the night, which shapes our attitudes the whole day long. We are a people held 'hostage.' Sad.

I can not opine on Philippines' politics. Indeed, if not for the occasional outbursts which are of some interest to international audiences—the islands apparently do a good job keeping their leader off the world's stage. I don't pretend to understand why any of this is occurring. We have our own national disgrace in President Donald J. Trump - a truly selfish and engrossing character.

Have you observed that Donald J.Trump has 'captured' our favorite news channels so much so that I, we, do not hear about Syria, Europe, Iraq, and an ongoing uprising in Daniel Ortega's Nicaragua? A news commentator on MSNBC last week mentioned, "the Northern Triangle (Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala)" and lapsed over into mentioning, "Daniel Ortega" (Nicaragua's leader) and the anchor did not discuss the situation in that country not one iota.  It is sad how much our president craves "allaboutmeism." Our fav channels have "DJ"© Trump all the time now.

I think back to when Donald Trump mocked Jeb Bush as "sleepy" during the republican primaries. It is becoming plain to me that Trump loves to live on the razor's edge of daily excitement. I wonder if the way to get to him is by ignoring him. Hmm.

That doesn't surprise me.    And you're right that the real long term harm to the US will come from Trump's appointments to the courts.   It's truly a terrible thing that the GOP did to America by blocking Obama's nominee.    All of the recent bad 5-4 rulings are because of that and this one on the Muslim ban is probably the worst yet.

Honestly, as a principled person, I was really hurt (still have residual "tamped down" anger) by President Obama being done that way. Actually, I am checking myself as I write this. Because, I know in my heart, Mitch McConnell did that to the first black president because of a confluence of republican desperation to replace Scalia and a gamble a black man would not want to crack the foundation of the Union on his watch.  It was between a rock and a hard place for Barack Obama, the President and the man.

Thomas is an enigma.  I remember during his introduction to the senate for his confirmation hearings, Sen. Thurmond was clearly heard to comment, "What?  He's married to a white woman?"

And this too.  Supposedly, there was a three and half year span when Thomas, sitting on the court, never uttered one word in the record during official deliberations.

D uterte forms team to dialogue with Catholic Church, other groups

11:19 AM June 26, 2018

President Rodrigo Duterte has formed a committee to dialogue with the Catholic Church and other religious groups following his scathing remarks against the church, Malacañang said on Tuesday.

Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said the committee would be a three-man team, which would include him, Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Ernesto Abella and Council for Philippine Affairs Secretary General Pastor “Boy” Saycon Jr.

Roque said Duterte made the decision Monday night to address his rift with the Catholic Church.
