ALEXANDRIA OCASIO-CORTEZ CAN’T ANSWER THIS BASIC QUESTION ON PALESTINE

S E E D E D   C O N T E N T

Socialist New York Democratic primary winner Alexandria-Ocasio Cortez called Israelis occupiers of Palestine and then struggled to say what “occupation” meant on “Firing Line.”

“I … think that what people are starting to see … in the occupation of Palestine is just an increasing crisis of humanitarian condition, and that to me is just where I tend to come from on this issue,” Ocasio-Cortez  said  Friday.

When PBS “ Firing Line ” host Margaret Hoover asked Ocasio-Cortez what she meant by “occupation,” she struggled to answer.

“Oh … um … I think what I meant is like … the … the settlements that are increasing in some of these areas and places where, um, where Palestinians are experiencing uh, difficulty in access to their housing and homes.”

When asked to expand on that definition, Ocasio-Cortez said she is “not the expert on geopolitics on this issue.”

-----------------------------------------

During college, she was an intern in the immigration office of U.S. Senator  Ted Kennedy . [17]   She graduated fourth in her class [16]  from Boston University's  College of Arts and Sciences  in 2011 with a bachelor's degree in  economics  and  international relations . [18]

Ocasio-Cortez has been a harsh critic of Israel, stating that the Israeli killing of Hamas operatives protesting the opening of the U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem was a “massacre” on  Twitter  in May.

Ocasio-Cortez also has been seen with Thomas Lopez-Pierre, an anti-Semitic activist who brags about “protecting tenants from ‘greedy jewish landlords'” on his  Twitter  bio. Lopez-Pierre stood behind Ocasio-Cortez at her victory party

As to the candidate?  She's of the Cynthia Nixon class of Demo-Socialists that really know nothing at all, besides that they shold win because they don't like who is in there now.  Pretty much their full platform.  Here in New York, we're having fun laughing at these pretenders.

I know. For some odd reason, some people don't seem to understand that how the US House of Representatives legislates affects all US citizens.

As to the candidate?  She's of the Cynthia Nixon class of Demo-Socialists that really know nothing at all, besides that they shold win because they don't like who is in there now.  Pretty much their full platform.

Exactly. To be more precise, their platform also includes free college, free healthcare, no sovereign borders, abolish ICE, etc but they never explain who will pay for their proposed freebies or who will protect legal immigrants and US citizens from illegal alien criminals who deal in human and drug trafficking.

Here in New York, we're having fun laughing at these pretenders.

It's not only NY that's laughing. Many across our country are laughing at this ignorant 28-year-old socialist community organizer clown, too. In only 2 PBS (left-wing) interviews, she made a fool of herself.

Here in Arizona we don't care about her, as she is some other state's problem. People of her ilk very seldom get elected outside of the major metropolitan areas like Phoenix or Tucson, and if they do they seldom last more than one term with a few exceptions because they wind up alienating their constituent base.

Seems that the Democratic Party has only radicals whose platform is:

  • Socialism is good, capitalism is bad
  • Keep the public dependent on the gov't through free healthcare, college, and other subsidies
  • Abolish ICE
  • Censor/shut down Free Speech on public and private property
  • Attack people who support Trump and/or Conservatives - verbally and physically
  • Put everyone who doesn't agree on SPLC's "hate" list
  • Impeach Trump

I'm sure there's more, but I'm tired.

She has a problem here.

The fact is that as it is used by so many, concerning Judea and Samaria, the word "occupation" makes no sense. To be "occupied" a territory must belong to some other sovereign entity, which is not the case for the region.

By killing masses of people in retaliation for what (allegedly) another particular group did.  Those protestors were were throwing rocks at Israeli soldiers many yards too far a way to be in any danger and yet some of those Israeli soldiers were casually using those protestors for sniper practice.  That's murder not self-protection.

The "economics/international relations" further shows her ignorance ...

New York Democratic congressional candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez claimed on Friday that the low unemployment rate is “part of the problem” of capitalism failing to help America’s working class because people think the economy is doing well when it’s not.

“The economy is going pretty strong … there’s roughly 4 percent, 3.9 percent unemployment,” Margaret Hoover, host of PBS’ “ Firing Line ,” told Ocasio-Cortez during an interview. “Do you think that capitalism has failed to deliver for working-class Americans?”

“Well, I think the numbers you just talked about is part of the problem, right?” Ocasio-Cortez said. “We look at these figures and we say, ‘Oh, unemployment is low, everything is fine, right?'”

Ocasio-Cortez also seemed to misunderstand the difference between unemployment and underemployment, asserting that unemployment is low because people are working multiple jobs.

“Unemployment is low because everyone has two jobs,” she said. “Unemployment is low because people are working 60, 70, 80 hours a week and can barely feed their family.”

The fact is that 9 out of 10 voters where she won are Democrats and Crowley was like Hillary, he just took it for granted he would win without doing anything to assure his success in doing so.  I don't think he has had any significant competition since he was first elected.  It would surprise me if any Republican is stupid enough to waste the money running against her, since a Democrat in that district is an automatic winner.

This from the person who claimed Jews have always lived in what's Israel now and it's always "belonged" to them.  According to the OT, Abraham came from Ur which was in Babylon, now Iraq.  So, even orthodox Jews who consider the Torah the word of Ha Shem, have to concede that the land was confiscated.   They invaded and conquered just part of the area known as Israel now and never ruled over the entire area of what we call the Middle East today.  So, they were outsiders.  Not only that, but every Arab living there now has ancestors going back in that area long before those invading Jews arrived.  To claim that Jews have always "owned" this area of the world is either a massive lie (if it continues to be promulgated despite the historical record) or malignant ignorance beyond measure.

First thing we need to establish here is that even though rightwingers like to make us think that everything on PBS is leftist, the Hoover Institution is absolutely a very conservative "think" tank featuring such extreme rightwing "lights" as Victor David Hanson and Niall Ferguson as regular contributors.  So, right off the bat we've got to expect that the goal is to try to embarrass Ms. Ocasio-Cortez.  I was hoping to find a transcript of this interview but, strangely, there isn't one.  And, typically, our seeder provided just snippets of what of the dialog carefully cut in order to make sure we didn't really find out what her full answers were to these questions.  Even more tellingly, he doesn't even give us a link to the entire interview, much less to the specific part involving Israel.  Here it is at the 18:40 mark:

Hoover:  "In the campaign you made one tweet or made one comment that referred to a killing by Israeli soldiers of civilians in Gaza and called it a massacre what became a little bit controversial.  But I haven't seen anywhere--what is your position on Israel."

O-C: "Well, I believe it is absolutely Israel's right to exist. I am a proponent of the two-state solution.* And for me, it's not, this is not a referendum, on the state of Israel.  For me, the lens through which I saw this incident as an activist, as an organizer, if 60 people were killed in Ferguson, MO, if 60 people were killed in the South Bronx, unarmed, if 60 people were killed in Puerto Rico, I just looked at that incident more through-through just an incident. And to me it would be just completely unacceptable if that happened on our shores. But I am...

Hoover: "Of course, the dynamic there in terms of geo-politics in the Middle East..."

O-C:  "Of course....."

Hoover: "....is very different in terms of people expressing their first amendent right to protest."

O-C: "Well...yes. But I also think that what people are starting to see at least in the occupation of Palestine is just an increasing crisis of [the] humanitarian condition.  And, to me, is just where I come from on this issue."

Hoover: "You used the term 'the occupation of Palestine.'  What did you mean by that?

O-C: “Oh … um … I think what I meant is like … the … the settlements that are increasing in some of these areas and places where, um, where Palestinians are experiencing uh, difficulty in access to their housing and homes.”

Hoover: "Could you expand on that?"

O-C: "Yeah, I mean I'd also just--I am not the expert on geopolitics on this issue.  You know, for me, I'm a firm believer in finding a two-state solution** on this issue and I'm happy to sit down with leaders of both of this-on both of these--for me, I look at these things through a human-rights lens. And I may not use the right words.  I know this is a very intense issue...."

Hoover:  "That's very honest, and you're going to..I mean it's very honest and when you're going to Washington and when you get to Washington you're going to get the opportunity to talk to a lot of people on all sides and visit Israel and visit and the West Bank..

O-C: "Absolutely, absolutely....and I think that's one of those things that's important, too, is that, you know, in especially the district I represent, I come from the South Bronx.  I come from a Puerto Rican background. And Middle Eastern politics was not exactly at my kitchen table every night. But I also recognize that this is an intensely important issue, for people in my district, for Americans across the country.  And I think what's at least important to communicate is that I'm willing to listen and am willing to learn and evolve on this issue like I think many Americans are."

So, despite the conveniently abbreviated hatchet-job on Ms. Ocasio-Cortez that this article attempted to perpetrate, the full context of her remarks shows that she's honest and open about her positions and even her need to learn more about larger issues than just what directly involves the district she's running in.  So, in that respect, she's already head and shoulders about most of the republican knee-jerkers on the Middle East mess.

*The official U.S. position, by the way, for over 40 years.

** Again, THE official US position for over 40 years.
