Canada struggling with illegal border 'crisis' of its own ahead of crucial election

The border in question, however, is not America’s border with Mexico, but Canada’s with the United States. Some estimate that as many as 400 a day are crossing the 5,525 mile border between Canada and the U.S. through non-official ports of entry and with provincial elections looming, the issue is causing political ramifications.

As the Trump Administration has cancelled Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for several nationalities with large immigrant communities in the U.S. - notably Haitians and Salvadorans - many of those people have felt they have little option but to flee to Canada for safety.

Under a refugee agreement known as the Safe Third Country Agreement that both the U.S. and Canada are party to, a person with protected status in a country that is deemed “safe” for refugees (in this case, the United States) cannot leave the country and apply for asylum in another “safe” country at an official port of entry.  A loophole in the agreement, however, allows these refugees to apply for asylum in another country if they’re already inside that country.

This has led to thousands of asylum-seekers crossing into Canada from gaps in the border with the U.S. over the past two years,   almost all of them into the province of Québec from upstate New York .

This situation has created political tension across Canada, with conservatives laying blame for the “crisis” squarely at the feet of Justin Trudeau’s government.  Shortly after President Trump took office, the Canadian prime minister issued a now-infamous Tweet saying that all refugees would be welcome in his country, with the hashtag #WelcomeToCanada.

Many, such as the opposition Conservative Party’s shadow Minister for Immigration, Michelle Rempel, have said that this created an unrealistic expectation that anyone could come to Canada. During emergency meetings in Parliament this summer on the issue, Rempel said she doesn’t think that’s sustainable, and added that she thought the “situation is going to get worse.”

Those feelings have been echoed by leaders in the province of Ontario, who have called on the Trudeau government to do come up with a plan on how to deal with asylum-seekers, who continue to cross into the country in significant numbers. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police intercepted 7,326 people at the border between April and July.

Actually, just like the Democrats want as many immigrants as possible to flood the USA because they are bound to vote Democratic, and just as Merkel wants as many jihadis to immigrate to Germany because they will vote for her and her party, Trudeau brainlessly follows their lead for the same reason NOTWITHSTANDING the increase in radical terrorism and anti-Semitism in Canada.

Well, his real dad, Fidel was a committed communist......one way to get there in Canada is to tilt the table so that you get the votes no matter what you do.  Even though that scenario has turned Venezuela into the worst kind of shit hole (where you can't even afford to buy toilet paper).  It's gotten to the point where many Ontarians will not even go to Toronto anymore as it is rapidly becoming a 3rd World Country of its own-even with the painfilly harsh gun laws, people are randomly getting shot in T O these days.

Yea there seems to be a lot of politicians and political parties that are willing to sell out their country in the name of building the constituent base.

That's the best description of the Republican party I've seen in years.  Although, you forgot to mention that the sell-out included to a hostile foreign state.  Thanks.

Well, since we are talking about Canada, you're off topic, but your typical political tourettes doesn't allow you to understand the world is bigger than the borders of the U.S.

LOL.  Pierre Elliott Trudeau may have been a socialist, was certainly a (small and large "L") Liberal (but NOT a Communist), and he may have been a friend of Fidel Castro (although at one time when I said that, someone contradicted me on it), but I really doubt that Margaret had an affair with Castro, although she was a pretty free-thinking individual.

Although I spent almost 5 decades in Toronto before moving to China, I have no desire to go back to that city. I agree with you that it has become a dangerous place. I fear for my daughter's safety, because of her work she is bound to be targeted by Trudeau's favoured jihadis.

Well, if its Canadian Labor, you have to pay them extra so they can pay the taxes on the 'Free' healthcare (along with the meds they can't aford to buy from the 'free' healthcare system), then you have to have all kinds of touchy feely feel good training programs to make sure everyone feels accepted......the list just goes on and on......

I know you know a lot about Canada, and spend time there, but I lived in and enjoyed the benefit of free healthcare, notwithstanding my taxes helped to pay for it - I never complained, nor did I complain about living in a country where generic medication competed with brands and were not blocked by corrupt officialdom, and for my years there as a senior citizen enjoyed free prescription medications.  Criticize if you want, but most Canadians are happy for it, not just for the benefit, but for the morality of it.

I know, it works best if you are closer ot a metropolitan hub-I have friends that live outside those areas, though not 'off the grid' and their ability to receive healthcare is substandard.  One friend would come here and we'd go to Sam's Club (like a Costco) so he could buy Omeprazole (Prilosec OTC or it's Generic version) in bulk, we'd have to go to my house, empty all the pills out and put them in a vitamin container to smuggle back across the border.....he could get 3 weeks worth for $18 here-over the counter, in Canada, it was prescription at $2.75 per pill.  His trip would literally save him and gis wife thousands of dollars.

I understand the good parts of it and like in all systems, there are parts that don't work quite so well......

Too late.  Another Socialist already painted himself into a corner LMFAO!  No one forced him to invite them and building a wall would be admitting he was wrong, and therefore personal responsibility for his own actions, which is a concept the far left simply abhors.

LOL. Take into consideration that walls along the Alaska and southern Canadian border would approach almost three times the length of the US/Mexico border - and it's not likely that Canada would pay out that kind of money for one.

"Significant numbers"????  3700/mo is "significant"???  Oh for fuck's sake.

The US caught 304,000 last year.   That's the population of Pittsburgh....getting caught sneaking across the border in 12 months.

Lord only knows how many we didn't catch.

For the effect of such immigration on the existing population, you need to compare country populations - America has TEN TIMES the population of Canada. Otherwise there is NO LOGIC to your statement.

Even on a per capita basis, this "crisis" is wildly less than the US puts up with all the time.

Add to this idea the fact that the vast majority of illegal border crossings happen in 4 states, and the comparisons are even less close.

Do the math:  25,333 per month to a population of around 320,000,000  is a lesser number than 3,700 per month for a population of 32,000,000.  Figures adjusted for population - Canada has 50% more to deal with.

Jack_TX
Professor Quiet
7.1.3  Jack_TX  replied to  Buzz of the Orient @7.1.2    6 years ago

Let's do the math.   Carefully this time.

It's not actually 3700/mo.  It was 7300 over four months..

It's also worth repeating that the overwhelming majority of US illegal immigration is the burden of California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas.

So if illegal immigration of less than 1/100th of 1% of your population annually is problematic, imagine what it's like in Laredo.
