Trump Betrayed Kurds To Please Turkish Dictator

Trump to Kurdistan 24: Kurds are great people, incredible ...

ERBIL ( Kurdistan 24) – The Kurds are "incredible fighters" and "great people," US president Donald Trump told a Kurdistan 24 correspondent on Thursday during the NATO summit in Brussels. ... But they are great people, I do believe they are great people,” US president Donald Trump

NOW

“As soon as the US folds its tent and leaves, Turkey will immediately begin an air bombardment followed by a ground attack by the [Ankara-backed] Free Syrian army. Thousands will die, thousands will be displaced and will be given no haven within Syria. They will be turned away at the Turkish border,” said David Phillips, a former senior state department official, and the author of the new book: The Great Betrayal: How America Abandoned the Kurds and Lost the Middle East.

“For more than three and a half years, they have been our boots on the ground and were the point of the spear in retaking [the Isis stronghold] Raqqa,” Phillips, now at Columbia University, said. “Who is going to fight for us in the future when we throw our allies under the bus?

Both Mattis and Pompeo advised Trump against agreeing to Erdogan's demands.   They both lost the argument and trump has betrayed US allies the Kurds.  What is in it for Trump?

Don't ignore the fact that Trump has opened the door for Iran to now move in and obtain a direct route to its terrorist proxy Hezbollah and put its war machine on Israel's border - what he is doing is as much a betrayal of Israel as it is of the Kurds.

True.

In fact, even beyond that-- its a betrayal of the interests of all of our friends.

(This includes the Kurds, democratic Arab forces in the SDF, Israel, and many European and other countries...)

And Trump's words and actions have been a great help to . . . our enemies. (Erdogan ruled Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Russia, etc).

General Mattis is a man of honour-- he just couldn't take Trump's insidious hypocrisy any more ... :-(

Actually, I have to admit I did something that is politically incorrect in the minds of many here on NT-- I actually read Mattis' resignation letter before commenting on it!

Basically he said he is resigning over irreconcilable differences with Trump.

Gen'l Mattis' two main points of contention?

1. Trump has been consistently criticizing and in other ways hurting our friends.

2. Trump's actions have been helping our enemies!

I agree. It's almost as if Trump knows that he is going to be removed from office and he is desperate to do what he can during his remaining time as POTUS to benefit Putin and Russian foreign policy. If that is true then it is treason and he must be prosecuted as such because it is a willful violation of his oath of office.

According to a version of events in the Associated Press, the US position going into the call was to demand that Turkey stall a planned offensive into Syria aimed at US-backed Kurdish elements of the SDF , which Ankara sees as indistinguishable from the Kurdish insurgency inside Turkey.

“The talking points were very firm,” one of the officials quoted by the Associated Press said. “Everybody said push back and try to offer [Turkey] something that’s a small win, possibly holding territory on the border, something like that.”

Erdoğan responded by saying that Isis had been 99% defeated.

“Why are you still there?” Erdoğan demanded, according to the account.

With the Turkish leader still on the line, Trump asked the same question of his national security adviser, John Bolton, who repeated US policy until then, that the defeat of Isis had to be “enduring”, preventing the possibility of a resurgence.

To the surprise of Bolton and Erdoğan, Trump instantly sided with the Turkish president.

I saw this article in Hurriyet (A Turkish news outlet) a few days ago:

ISIL kills 700 prisoners in east Syria

Jihadist militants have executed nearly 700 prisoners in two months in eastern  Syria , the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Dec. 19.

(Note: IS = Islamic State-- in other words, ISIS).

It's okay. They are just the JV, after all.

True, that must be why trump has taken 2 years and they still aren't gone, despite him saying he would have them defeated in 30 days.

Maybe Trump thought the LAST President took care of the JV squad?

If that was the case, why would trump say that he would defeat ISIS....I mean, if they were already gone? Weird!

Erdogan must have some blackmail hold on Trump.

The Turks want to attack the Kurds even outside of Turkey's borders.  Why on earth would a president of the United States agree to stand by and watch that?

Trump owes millions to the Saudis so he is not going to go against their wishes.

President Donald Trump’s early entanglements with Saudi Arabia largely consisted of wealthy Saudis buying his assets on the cheap as he veered time and again into bankruptcy. In 1991, Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal purchased Trump’s yacht, Trump Princess, after Trump was forced to surrender it to creditors because he was roughly $900 million in debt. Talal’s purchase provided Trump “with desperately needed cash” at the time, according to Newsweek . In 1995, Trump’s lenders pressured him to sell the Plaza Hotel in New York City, which Talal purchased for $325 million, $65 million less than what Trump paid for it in 1988.

It will probably soon come to light that Erdogan promised Trump a deal that would benefit him (Trump) financially.

Here's my theory of which I posted on another seed but I'll re-post here since it may be more relevant here.

Flynn's two buddies that were doing some "work" for Turkey just got indicted.  Several days later Erdogan picks up the phone and calls Trump and tells him to pull US troops out.   Coincidence......maybe.

So, what's this mean?  I think it means that Putin is tired of not getting what he paid for when he put Trump in office.  He also knows that Trump is getting closer to being impeached.  Therefore, he's calling in his markers and Trump is trying to appease him by getting out of the way via withdrawing US troops.

It is truly amazing to hear the left complain about Trump pursuing the same policies that Barak Obama pursued in Iraq. Obama left office with Russia in Syria, ISIS in control of vast areas of the middle east, an Iran "deal" which left Iran on track to a nuclear weapons arsenal along with about 3 times the tax payer money Trump wants for a wall, a US Embassy in Havana despite the Castro brothers not changing their tyrannical regime in any way and that last minute warning about imminent danger from North Korea. Trump removes forces from two middle eastern regions and suddenly progressives are on the side of American intervention. What a joke.

Or this.  The Khashoggi murder has already been mentioned in previous posts.

However...….Mohamad bin Salman was able to handle Khashoggi criticisms with little problem or effect to his agendas.  But, did Khashoggi 'stumble upon' financial info which would be extremely detrimental to the agendas agreed to at Helsinki which involved the political/financial fortunes of Putin, Trump and Erdogan?  Did Erdogan assure Trump and Putin that he was in a position to diffuse and hide that information Khashoggi uncovered if Trump did as requested?

All of this is speculation.  However, there are just to many unanswered questions and even more questions that have yet to be asked.

Never thought I'd see so many war hawks claiming to be liberals.

Bush got us into the mess with the 2003 Iraq invasion, but we cannot pull out now without threatening the lives of many people due to the rise of ISIL that happened in the Baathist power vacuum. I didn't want war but we need to make sure that there are peacekeepers there until the region stabilizes and is self-governing. ISIL is the middle east equivalent of the Khmer Rouge and Pol Pot  so unless you want another million people to die we can't just walk away. Iraq isn't yet stable and self-governing and Syria is still on the verge of civil war. Russia would love to be able to turn these countries into satellite republics that obey Moscow.

If we just pull out troops in Afghanistan it will happen there as the Taliban seek revenge on those who cooperated with the Americans.  Daddy Bush understood this possibility and that is why he didn't seek to overthrow Saddam in 1991.

Exactly. I was in the first gulf war and I remember at the time asking why we weren't getting rid of Saddam...a lot of us were. After it was over? We were told why Saddam was left in place, "because to remove him would create a breeding ground for terrorists".

Now I like GWB, he is a good man, but he was a terrible president who should have listened to his dad.

No. As much as we all hated Saddam, he provided stability to the entire region. After he was removed from power, there was no such leader in the region to provide that stability, and the terrorists took over, most notably, ISIS.

I was there, I know what I am talking about.
