Greta Thunberg named Time Magazine's Person of the Year

“We can’t just continue living as if there was no tomorrow, because there is a tomorrow,” Thunberg told Time Magazine. “That is all we are saying.”

Time magazine has named Greta Thunberg their Person of the Year.

Over the last 16 months Thunberg has made waves with her climate activism, meeting with the Pope, locking horns with President Donald Trump, addressing heads of state at the UN, and inspiring 4 million people to join the global climate strike on September 20, 2019 - the largest climate demonstration to date.

“We can’t just continue living as if there was no tomorrow, because there is a tomorrow,” Thunberg told Time Magazine. “That is all we are saying.”

— TIME (@TIME)   December 11, 2019

Thunberg began her mission in August 2018, when she skipped school and camped out in front of the Swedish Parliament, holding a sign that read Skolstrejk för klimatet: “School Strike for Climate.”

She has caught the eye of the world's most powerful leaders. Trump shared her speech from the UN summit, where she accused the leaders of climate negligence, by claiming "She seems like a very happy young girl looking forward to a bright and wonderful future."

Thunberg's way of dealing with such critique is by changing her Twitter profile to exactly what she has been called, so she changed it to read "A very happy young girl looking forward to a bright and wonderful future."

On Tuesday, Brazil's right-wing President Jair Bolsonaro   called her   a "brat" (using the Portuguese word "pirralha") after she criticized mounting violence against indigenous people in which two Amazon tribesmen were shot dead four days ago.

The teen activist once again retorted by changing the biographical description on her Twitter account to "Pirralha."

Thunberg's effect had   reached Israel , when Israelis who are concerned about a warming climate are placing pictures of Thunberg in their kitchen areas in workplaces across Tel Aviv, next to disposable forks, knives and plates, to shame their colleagues for using plastic ware.

Far better than 3 of the other 4 choices:

Pelosi - What a joke.

Trump - While it would have been fun to watch lefist / liberal / Democrat heads explode, he's only doing his job.

"The Whistleblower" - What a joke.

Hong Kong Protestors - Good selection.

In YOUR eyes, maybe, but they're going nowhere - down the road they will have no choice but to be part of the mainland Beijing government, no matter how hard they try and America tries to provoke them.  The recent vote was a mere Pyrrhic victory - they won a battle but they'll lose the war. I actually feel sorry for them, because where I am, the people are quite happy.

TIME chooses a person who makes the most news during the year, and IMO, if you look at NT as a microcosm of the world, certainly of America, who possibly is the most popular subject, whether positive or negative, but Trump?  However, TIME is left wing so there's no way they would have chosen him even if he proved to be the second coming of Jesus, because it would have been a boost for him to be re-elected.

It makes him look petty and pouty.

There's a common misperception that the criteria for selecting the Time Person of the Year is the person the editors feel made the biggest positive contribution to the world. And that therefore its supposed to be a great honor.

But those who believe that are uninformed...(why do I keep thinking of so many NT users when I see the word "uninformed"? jrSmiley_26_smiley_image.gif )

What its based on is the editor's choice for the person (or group of people or idea) who they feel who has done the most to influence the events or the year... (whether that influence was positive or negative)

That's a tough question-- there are several people who've done a lot to influence events....I couldn't one person who's done the most.

Trump..Putin..Xi?

As always, the things people like Zuckerberg, Bezos (heck, probably even Jack Ma) Tim Cook, Mark Benioff and many other techies have done are really changing things. Too many tech entrepreneurs to mention....

Btw, I've noticed that fairly recently the whole issue of the environment has recently become much more prominent. Although if that's true, I don't know if just one person should get or the credit (or blame!)

That would make her an appallingly terrible choice.

She hasn't influenced anything.  She's famous for saying "how dare you" to a group of old, not all that powerful people who have almost no ability to do anything she might have wanted anyway.

She is infinitely less influential on the events of the year than Jerome Powell, Robert Mueller, or even Megan Rapinoe.

She's less influential than the person who developed the Cameron Diaz/White Cat memes.

No...the selection is based on the editorial staff's choice for "who can drive our readership the best".  Greta gives them a shot at attracting Millennial readers.

That's what I thought at first.

But maybe she has.

Sometimes a group of people can relate to a person who takes a strong for an issue that they might be sympathetic to but haven't yet taken much action on.

Now I don't know is she's the cause-- or a result-- but quite recently there's been a surprising upsurge in support for environmental issues amongst Millennials. (I haven't noticed that big of a recent trend towards that in any other group)>.

I was quite surprised at this, but recently I'm seeing that for a lot of Millennials their main issue is-- climate change and the environment. (I would've thought they'd support that-- but it would be down on their list of priorities).

Hong Kong Protestors - Good selection.

Regardless of whether or not you agree with their goals and/or their tactics, they are not having a major impact around the world. A big impact on China-- perhaps a little in nearby countries. Some impact on foreign businesses who inver st in the area or who have offices there (Hong Kong is a major world financial center).

But those protestors aren't having that much impact on the rest of the world.

(Of course Hamas is doing its best to change that with their incendiary balloons and kites.)  As a memorial to my late father, I paid to plant a 1,000 tree forest in Israel.  The trees should be about 40 years old now.

Is that directed at me? Your reply was to yourself, so maybe you made something up and now you're ashamed? If it is directed at me, I will say that I haven't made anything up and I challenge you to prove otherwise. Maybe you'd like to be clear what you're referring to or retract your libelous claim.

will help you to understand what criteria the people at Time actually use

Since you brought it up, I will say that I don't really care what their criteria is. The popular understanding is that Time is saying the figure on their cover is the most significant, important, newsworthy person of the year. Furthermore, this person is often someone who is a harbinger of new things to come. That is roughly my understanding of it anyway.

How they arrive at that determination doesn't interest me. They make a pronouncement and put a person (usually) on the cover, inviting the opinion of all who see it. So, in my opinion, they made an ok choice, but they certainly could have chosen someone else. Any number of other people might have been a better choice, including the Hong Kong protestors. You could have also gone with AOC, Elon Musk, or even BTS.

They could have also picked anyone running for president or associated with impeachment or the investigations into Trump. Maybe Nancy Pelosi? How about "The Whistleblower?" The pick they made might also be seen as a snub of other people who have done very real work on climate change but didn't happen to be 16 and lucky enough to get thrown in front of some cameras.

Joseph Stalin: 1939, 1942

stalin.jpg AP

TIME named Joseph Stalin Man of the Year in 1939 and 1942

On the death of Lenin in 1924, Joseph Stalin took control of the Soviet Union, instituting policies of nationalization and agricultural collectivization that fomented civil war and famine as well as cultivating a cult of personality. TIME described this public worship: "Joseph Stalin has gone a long way toward deifying himself while alive. No flattery is too transparent, no compliment too broad for him. He became the fountain of all Socialist wisdom" (1/1/40).

Stalin established a reign of terror that included mass arrests, executions and deportations. He also rallied his troops to beat back a German invasion in some of the bloodiest fighting of World War II.

At his death on March 1, 1953, there was a mass outpouring of grief; at a 1956 Party Congress, successor Nikita Khrushchev denounced him as a murderer. Stalin was twice TIME's Man of the Year, for 1939 and 1942.

Or have the integrity to admit your accusation is untrue.

It was deleted as off-topic, but seeing as how it was literally about the Time Person of the Year, it's hard to see how it could possibly have been off-topic.

In the meantime, you also wrote,

why not contribute something useful to the conversation

which I then did and you ignored it. So, I guess you weren't actually interested in having a conversation about the topic, just freaking out and attacking me for posting a meme you didn't like.
