Walmart removes guns and ammo from shelves, citing 'isolated civil unrest'
Walmart removes guns and ammo from shelves, citing fears of 'civil unrest.' The move comes just a few days before Election Day and after protests related to the fatal police shooting of a Black man in Philadelphia.

S E E D E D   C O N T E N T

Walmart has removed all guns and ammunition products from its sales floors in response to concerns about break-ins and civil unrest.

The firearms products will still be available upon customer request.

“We have seen some isolated civil unrest and as we have done on several occasions over the last few years, we have moved our firearms and ammunition off the sales floor as a precaution for the safety of our associates and customers,” Kory Lundberg, a spokesman for Walmart, told NBC News in an emailed statement.

The chain has removed guns and ammo from its floors at different points over the years, such as following protests over the killing of George Floyd by police, or following an increase in mass shooting events.

The move comes in the wake of peaceful protests that gave way to skirmishes and looting in Philadelphia following   the fatal police shooting of a Black man, Walter Wallace Jr.   Police   tweeted   Tuesday night that a "a large crowd of [approximately] 1000 is looting businesses" in the Port Richmond area of the city. Earlier in the evening, news helicopter footage showed people appearing to break in and take items from a Foot Locker store and another business in that area.

Firearm sales interest has soared this year, according to  the FBI database of firearm background checks , the best available approximation of total gun sales. The number of checks initiated this year, over 28 million, has already surpassed the total number of checks for all of 2019.

Gun purchase interest tends to rise around stressful events and ahead of elections, where some buyers wish to protect themselves from expected unrest and others are worried that a winning Democrat candidate will pass stiffer gun control laws.

Interest by first-time gun buyers has jumped this year, the CEO of major gun manufacturer Smith & Wesson Brands, Mark Peter Smith, said in a Sept. 3 conference call with investors. The company estimated that firearms newcomers were responsible for roughly 40 percent of sales this year.

They're just afraid of left wing looting, even if Biden wins they might still do a little celebratory looting and rioting. Hell if the left takes power it's not like there will be any repercussions.

It looks like you can still buy guns. They just aren't on the floor. It might be a good idea for when the looters come and mayors tell cops to ignore it.

Exactly.

If someone shoots someone else-- just keep in mind-- its never the fault of the actual perp-- its always someone else's fault, that I can tell you!

Blaming mayors is a common ruse-- although blaming all the large corporations Many people are saying that those big companies are "Socialist" after all!!!.

Socialists-- who want to double your taxes!!!

Why?  Walmart is securing the firearms and ammunition to prepare for looting or other civil unrest.  That would seem to be a prudent thing to do.

The newsworthy part of the story is that Walmart is expecting the violence.  That has become so predictable that it requires (and allows) preparation just as for hurricanes.

Walmart is expecting the violence

About three months ago there were some postings on social media that caused local police to suspect rioting in my area. It never happened but the local Walmart stacked pallets of garden soil and fertilizer in front of their doors 12 feet high totally barricading the glass entrances. I though it was a great idea, sure they could have still gotten in but it would have slowed them down and limited what they could carry out. It might be harder this time around because they might not have the garden soil and fertilizer stocks they had three months ago, maybe they'll use deicer salt and windshield washer fluid this time.

I agree that they should. There is sure to be a lot of rioting and looting during and after the election. Trumps private militia has already sworn to do that if Trump should lose.

Plus, there are sure to be a lot of people who will take advantage of the violent conditions going on to break into Walmart and steal the guns they could not obtain legally. And of course, there is always a need for ammo to go with, or add to what they already have.

So by taking them out of stock in the stores would help prevent that kind of illegal gain of firearms and ammo. Not that they could not get it elsewhere, but, stores like Walmart are considered easy pickings.

I'm planning to go grocery shopping tomorrow so that I don't have to be out and about until after Tuesday, or later, depending on how things pan out.

That's no surprise.  The civilians here don't have guns.  In fact I've never seen a policeman with a gun, nor a bank guard - maybe only SWAT type cops have them.  However, I HAVE seen guns on bank-delivery armoured car staff and soldiers. There simply are no shootings.

Most of the chinese made guns were banned in the late 80s by executive order of geo HW bush , when he banned the importation of cheap chinese ammo, i remember getting .223/5.56 ammo for 3 bucks a pack of 20 rounds  back then . though IF i could find one i wouldnt mind picking up a norinco knock off of an m-1a1. back then they went for a third of what a US made one does .

Not surprising , not even half the walmarts in existance sell guns at all , and they made moves a few years ago to not sell what are considered "assault weapons " or anything even remotely close , the stores that do stick with the more "traditional " type of firearms such as the lever , bolt or slide action types , might find a classic semi but cal choice is limited.

as for ammo , well dependant on where you are , will dictate how hard or easy it is to get. here , i have about 20 other choices to get ammo all in a 20 mile radius. they actually still sell ammo here in the mom and pops and the hardware stores......

In doing a little research the white population is the largest group of gun owners. (% of the population).

In the past year, minorities have been purchasing guns at a very rapid pace. Make of it what you will but there is a saying among minorities that ''I'd rather go to trial than to the cemetery''.

Walmart is only removing the guns from public view you can still buy one and ammo from Walmart.

morning kav.

In fairness i dont think it is simply the presidential election but a combination of a few different factors driving the tracable gun sales so far this year.

I have been watching the reports since may and the actual numbers the FBI are stating are pretty eye opening . as to the number of back ground checks they have done.

i think what happened over the summer , more than the election itself has been a major driver of the issue , though during a "normal " election cycle , with 2 opposing points of view , gun sales can be affected , but not to the scale currently seen .

i think more of a driving force for the gun sales is the fact it has been shown to those that were either on the fence about gun ownership or even to a good extent , "anti" gun , see that there can and will be  times that all arguments are moot when it comes to immediate self protection and those things one once counted on are not in play for whatever reason, so i agree , better to be judged by 12 , than to be carried by 6.

This may sound weird but I don't trust gun sale stats. I have read a while back that most gun sales are people purchasing another weapon. Meaning they are already a weapon owner, just adding to their collection.

I don't know if we get an accurate read on new owners.

If some one is going to use them as an absolute , then no i dont think they can be trusted  simple fact is that not ALL gun sales are required to go through a dealer that is required to do background checks , at best the stats can be used to get a ball park idea of how many sales have occured that can be tracable.

lets not forget that there are times a bacckground check isnt even required because it doesnt involve a whole gun , need a new mag ? no background check , want to replace parts? unless its a serial numbered finished part( us the AR -15 as an example , only the lower is serial numbered , but the upper that holds the barrel and bolt is not.), no BGC required.

I can have 1 lower receiver , but the uppers and stocks to make 20 different variants , so do I have 1 gun or 20?

The largest group of first time owners is within the Asian communities due to Trump's hate speeches against China.  We had a 5 year old boy here beaten by other kids for no other reason than that he was Chinese.  I am betting the parents of those little asswipes are magats and instilled the hate into their own children.

The state of Michigan is going to allow people (presumably men) to enter Michigan polling places openly carrying guns.

If I remember correctly , in the movie The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance everyone coming into the meeting where the citizens were going to vote on who among them to send to the territorial convention had to take their guns off and leave them at the door.

That story took place 150 years ago. Where is our progress?

A movie with 3 of my favorite actors , lee marvin ,jimmy stewart, john wayne . not in that particular order .

but still just a movie that artistic lic was taken and in no way showed the reality of history, because the wild west , really wasnt as wild as the movies would make people believe.

Excellent!

After all, as "everyone knows"-- the more people who own guns, and the more people remember to carry them around with them-- the less shootings we will have.

(Its simple math!)

if i remember the scene your talking about john correctly , there was more of an outcry against the bar being closed for the meeting and vote than the weapons being allowed in....liberty had his silver tipped whip during the entire meeting and vote , not that it helped get the vote he wanted.

its a little more complex than that i think .

it has the basic good vs evil storyline , it also tells the story of a person whom wholeheartedly believes that it is the law and the courts that can solely solve all human disputes , and in the end he has to make a choice to believe in the law , which has not protected him , or take the law in his own hands in self defense . only to find out he had backup from a most unexpected place , yet the man whom actually shot liberty , went with no recognition and did so til his dying day.

remember the end of the movie? the editor tells the cub reporter after stewarts character tells the TRUE story? when legend becomes fact , print the legend. and he then ripped up the story.

to me its more complex because i think its a good thing to have faith in something , but when that faith gets shaken and the principles one believes are tested , one has to have the backbone to stand and fight for those principles , even IF it is in a way one would normally find distasteful.

There is currently no federal law prohibiting the presence of firearms at polling sites. Instead, regulation is left to the states.  Hopefully due to this recent madness, Biden will work to get that changed.  You simply do not fing need a gun to vote.

moot discussion now as far as walmarts concerned , they reversed course and guns and ammo back on the shelves.

likely it will be up to each store , if they even sell guns to decide for themselves , and since only half the stores even sell guns , it shouldnt be too hard to figure out.
