As America emerges from its socially distanced bubble, "critical race theory" continues to dominate headlines. For those basking in white privilege, critically evaluating the racial caste system feels terrifying. They fear tectonic plates shifting beneath our social landmass.
Our nation is in the process of exchanging color-blind ideology with anti-racism. White people will have to take a good, hard look in the mirror and into their family albums. Some are afraid of the skeletons they will find, and others are leery of the theory that will make them take a look in the first place.
White people want to focus on selected parts of American history, lionizing their role. Many choose to ignore that the gap between Black and white homeownership is wider than it was 50 years ago. Or that Black families have one-tenth the wealth as white ones. Currently, Black people are 3.25 times more likely to die in police encounters.
Acknowledging disparities means white people would feel pressure to address inequalities, something many would rather ignore.White people who fear critical race theory ironically oppose the very theory which could provide them cultural competency. And while any Black writer could compose a saga on the nonchalance of white Americans, there is another factor at play here. Most white people do not understand critical race theory. They simply oppose it at face value.
Society loves to give white people the benefit of the doubt. When conservatives like Mitch McConnell or Donald Trump call critical race theory un-American, people assume they understand what they oppose. They've called the theory Marxist, attempting to conflate critical legal studies (CLS) with critical race theory (CRT). Nuance means nothing to those attempting to distort a powerful message.
If you think that white people do not need to understand critical race theory to oppose it, consider the following. Imagine that a man wants to disprove the theory of gravitation. He would have to first understand force, the gravitational constant, the mass of two objects, and the center of their masses. Then, he would need to show why this theory is false. To invalidate an established theory, someone has to show their work, demonstrate how it is faulty. Unless a man could defy the law of gravity, I doubt he would get his feet off the ground. More importantly, no one would take his critique seriously.
In society, disagreements are normal and, in some instances, can strengthen our resolve. However, basing your opposition on a lack of understanding is foolhardy. Americans should evaluate critical race theory, its tenets. Then, they can decide for themselves whether or not this theory is harmful or helpful for American school children.
What is critical race theory?

First things first. Critical race theory recognizes race as a social construct rather than a biological function. In other words, people who come from different races are not sub-humans or sub-species. We are all one race — the human race. Colorblind theorists love this part. But, they are not so keen on what follows.
Race is a social construct developed by white colonists. The subsequent laws of enslavement and segregation derive from a false theory of white supremacy. You may ask yourself, why is white supremacy a false theory? Simply put, differences amongst racial groups are due to environmental and social factors. So, the idea of white people being inherently superior to other races has no scientific merit. But, that did not stop scientists from claiming Black people were inferior.
Negroes, with their smaller brains and blood vessels, and their tendency toward indolence and barbarism, Cartwright told fellow doctors, had only to be kept benevolently in the state of submission. (Ruane, 2019).
Critical race theory does not assert that Black people are superior to other races. On the contrary, it posits that Black people are equal to other racial groups but have been systematically oppressed because of the creation of the racial caste system.
Secondly, critical race theory asserts that racism is systemic, not aberrational. While white people often view instances like George Floyd's death as an anomaly, this theory postulates that racism is something people of color endure consistently in American society.
The third tenet asserts that Black people's legal setbacks benefit white people. Consider the current fight for voting rights. Taking away access to Black people benefits white people. When Georgia Deputy Cody Griggers charged Black people with fake felonies, he acted on this point. He understood that holding Black people back strengthened the shrinking, white voting block.

The fourth tenet of critical race theory asserts that Black people endure "different radicalization," resting on racial stereotypes. Othering Black people dehumanizes them, greenlighting acts of overt racism. Suddenly, it becomes okay to stop the Black man rather than the white one if you accept the racist premise that Black people are inherently dangerous.
Othering is ugly, as seen in Germany's holocaust or America's Trail of Tears. Different radicalization explains why slavery could persist in the first place. Critical race theory postulates that this dynamic takes place and continues to threaten people of color.
The fifth tenet of critical race theory is "intersectionality." This theory hypothesizes individuals cannot be placed into a single, identifying box. For example, a Black woman is both Black and female. By viewing a woman as only Black, for example, society would fail to understand the way her womanhood impacts her lived experience. Critical race theory posits that people are dynamic and interdimensional.
Lastly, the sixth tenet asserts the need for a "voice of colour." Critical race theorists believe that someone from the same group is the best person to speak for them. Under this theory, representation matters because a Black man would be theoretically more in tune with other Black men's specific needs and experiences. As Tim Scott demonstrated, this theory is an approximation. Someone's skin color or sex does not guarantee they would be the group's best advocate. The theory simply postulates they would be more likely to be a better representative.
Critical race theorists believe in the power of "storytelling." When Black people share their experiences, they help to inform the public about their perspective, hopefully shifting the social climate. Critical race theory contains different groups of thought. Legal scholars published the aforementioned tenets in 1989 at a Workshop on Critical Race to create more structure for their theory.
"Critical race theory is a practice. It's an approach to grappling with a history of White supremacy that rejects the belief that what's in the past is in the past, and that the laws and systems that grow from that past are detached from it," said Kimberle Crenshaw, a founding critical race theorist and a law professor who teaches at UCLA and Columbia University." (Karimi, 2021)
Is critical race theory Marxist?
Critical race theory is not the same as Marxism. For starters, CRT does not promote the same economic or political vision. Critical race theorists do believe, however, that traditional liberal movements have failed to deliver progress for Black people. Incrementalism and colorblind ideology has failed, so the natural progression is to focus on identities. That much is self-evidenced by the two-step forward and one step back civil rights struggle Black Americans experience. Critical race theorists advocate for structural change.
"Unlike CLS scholars, however, critical race theorists did not wish to abandon the notions of law and legal rights altogether, because in their experience, some laws and legal reforms had done much to help oppressed or exploited people." (Britannica, 2021).
While some white conservatives would have the world think that critical race theory is attempting to destroy the government or the laws that keep us safe, they are either wholly ignorant about these theories or purposefully misleading people to frighten them. You be the judge. However, one thing is blatantly clear — critical race theory is not Marxist, and its supporters do not endorse communism.
Most white people do not understand critical race theory. They simply oppose it at face value.
Acknowledging America's social hierarchy could provide much-needed healing in a nation, once torn apart by my ancestor's seditious slavers. However, some white people rather make critical race theory into a boogie man. White people who fear critical race theory are using deflection 101. They will do anything to distract from their role in maintaining white supremacy.
Mitch McConnell has a conflict of interest
White men like Mitch McConnell love telling Black people "no." He took joy in blocking our first Black president Obama's agenda and judicial nominations. For years, McConnell referred to himself as the Grim Reaper, blocking popular, progressive legislation. He wore this title with pride. Men like McConnell kill more than legislation; they kill dreams. Maybe they should call him Freddy Krueger instead.
White men often puff out their chests to declare, " I never owned slaves ." However, many of those same men could not say the same for their predecessors. The federal government compensated slave owners and slaves and their descendants received nothing. Over 150 years after slavery, Black people are still suffering from a staggering race-wealth gap.
White people continue to benefit from the forced labor of African slaves — they've inherited it. Mitch McConnell is the descendent of slave owners, and his family's wealth is a testament to the back-breaking work of my ancestors. And while this stings, this is not all about feelings. White people, whose families owned slaves, have the audacity to say they do not want to talk about critical race theory. I do not know who they think they are fooling with this "in the past" time nonsense. There is a direct link between his family owning slaves and the position he holds today. He is the embodiment of the policies they attempted to maintain. When a white man says we should not discuss critical race theory in schools, tell him, " I think thee doth protest too much ."
Where do we go from here?
"Critical race theorists hold that the law and legal institutions in the United States are inherently racist insofar as they function to create, and maintain social, economic, and political inequalities between whites and nonwhites, especially African Americans." (Britannica, 2021).
If someone disagrees with critical race theory, respectfully ask them what in particular they take issue with. For example, do they deny that slavery occurred, that the subsequent Jim Crow laws maintained a racial hierarchy, that racial disparities continue to exist in the modern era? Or do they feel that injustices should persist or that we should never discuss inequities in American society? Then, ask them what evidence they have for these claims.
Many white people have chosen ignorance over enlightenment and want to demonize a theory they do not understand. Talking about America's original sin is not unAmerican and white men wouldn't be running from a conversation about race if they were truly proud of all American history. Burying undesirable aspects of this nation's history create sycophants, not patriots. Critical race theory buts heads with American exceptionalism. It asks us to evaluate the racial, social hierarchy and to dismantle systems and beliefs that maintain inequalities. That's the grand scheme. And if that vision of a diverse, inclusive, honest America frightens you, what does that say about your loyalty to democracy?

I dont entirely approve of the approach of Critical Race Theory, but I dont usually entirely approve of any one approach. They all have their missteps.
CRT is a way of looking at the issue of racism and has it's place. It shouldn't scare anyone.
There are only a handful of countries that teach hatred of America. Most notable would be China, Russia and the US.

I tend to agree with all of those points. It could be said that a lack of understanding (based on incomplete information), or perhaps the reliance on misinformation, is what leads us to distrust and fear most of the time. Skepticism can be a good thing, but it should lead to a rational quest for more knowledge and a better understanding, not simply linger as an irrational fear.
First of all, Critical Race Theory is not about the Black population or the history of the Black population. CRT is all about the white population. CRT provides a forum for telling a highly selective and distorted history of the white population.
Secondly, it's not white privilege; [deleted] The Black population has played a prominent role in the Democratic Party since its inception in 1829. The Black population is still prominent in the politics of the Democratic Party for the same reasons. [deleted]
The League of Nations was created by segregationist Woodrow Wilson, leader of the Democratic Party at that time.
Thirdly, condemning the white population for slave owners in their past also condemns the Black population for slaves in their past. Once and always a slave owner can't be decoupled from once and always a slave. There can't be slave owners without slaves. The political expediency to revive the past also condemns both the white population and Black population to perpetuating that past. And we already know which sides each of those populations represent.
Nonsense and the US never became a member.
It's about studying the effects of racism in laws and society, it just so happens that the white populations are almost always the beneficiaries of any inequality found, or at least rarely the ones being discriminated against or marginalized.

Southern white Christian conservative ideology bears a very great deal of responsibility for slavery, Jim Crow, segregation, and, today, institutional racism, they just happened to share a common name that many party's throughout American history have used. There was the Democratic-Republican Party, the Christian Democratic Party, The Democratic Labour Party, The Conservative Democrat Party, The Democratic Peoples Party, The Progressive Democratic Party, The Civic Democratic Party, The United Democratic Party, The Democratic Socialist Party, The States Rights Democratic Party and half a dozen more.
In fact, in 1828 supporters of Andrew Jackson had begun calling themselves Democrats. They wanted small government, and they opposed trade protection, national banks, and paper money.
The different parties are not defined by the use of a word that's root is "Democracy" in their names, they are defined by their ideology.
The States Rights Democratic Party arose due to a Southern regional split in opposition to the Democratic Party. After President Harry S. Truman, a member of the Democratic Party, ordered integration of the military in 1948 and other actions to address civil rights of African Americans, many Southern conservative white politicians who objected to this course organized themselves as a breakaway faction. Their ideology was firmly established in their own party platform which was ideologically opposed to the democratic Party platform at the time, their Southern conservative platform stated "We stand for the segregation of the races and the racial integrity of each race; the constitutional right to choose one's associates; to accept private employment without governmental interference, and to earn one's living in any lawful way. We oppose the elimination of segregation, the repeal of miscegenation statutes, the control of private employment by Federal bureaucrats called for by the misnamed civil rights program. We favor home-rule, local self-government and a minimum interference with individual rights."
Not even the Democratic Party of the 1940's and 50's was ideologically in line with the Southern conservative States Rights Democratic party, that's why there was a schism. And they are even more diametrically opposed today. Anyone who is still desperately trying to link the two is either woefully ignorant, intentionally obtuse or trying to hide their own complicity and agreement with the old States Rights Democratic party platform which has essentially been picked up and adopted by modern day conservative Republicans. The white Christian conservatives who used to belong to the Southern Democratic party or the States Rights Democratic party didn't leave the south, they didn't all die off as some have tried to claim, they still control the South, they still defend the monuments to the confederacy their ancestors erected, they still fly confederate flags, they still honor their confederate ancestry, they just don't vote for Democrats anymore because they are ideologically opposed to what the modern progressive Democratic Party has become, a party that protects minority rights and is proactive in righting the wrongs of the past and accept the facts found when examining the racial inequalities that still exist in our laws and society.
But the Black population isn't racist. Only the white population is racist. Therefore, CRT is only about the white population.
And white Democrats really do receive preferential treatment in all aspects of society. Democrat privilege is quite real.
Only in the minds of the perpetually persecuted.
I would bet that if you spoke to all three of those men in that photo they would tell you that they have all experienced discrimination, that they all had to struggle to make it in a society built for and run by white Christians who seem oblivious to their plight. Just because many are able to overcome those roadblocks and hate and are able to achieve something more than perhaps their parents and peers were able to doesn't mean everything is fine and we can stop worrying about the effects of race in our laws and society. That black lawyer no doubt knows very well how his client will likely get a longer sentence if convicted, be less likely to be offered early parole, will likely have a higher bail amount and was more likely to end up where he is now than a young white man even though white do and deal drugs at the same or higher rates. I'm sure both the officer and attorney have had the "talk" with their own children, preparing them for being pulled over and profiled, being followed by security in department stores, something white parents often don't even know exists. So while some ignorant calloused white bigots may use their photo in an attempt to deflect any responsibility, I've no doubt all three would vehemently disagree with the flawed message it presents. Color may not define their future, but it certainly presents hurdles and difficulties they've had to overcome that white Americans did not.

Jim would have to show me where any curriculum teaches white kids they SHOULD be ashamed, for me to believe him. That said any teacher that tells children to be ashamed of things beyond their control should be relieved of duties and removed from ever working with children. It's not ethical. There is a difference between teaching children history in context and how it applies to a modern or future society and telling them they are responsible for what their ancestors may, or may not, have done 2 and 3 generations ago.
I don't condone it nor support slavery and don't have any problems with a historically accurate teaching of it, but no I'm not ashamed. I had no part in it, therefore I have no need to feel ashamed.

Well that's certainly not true, there are many racist black Americans who harbor hate towards whites due to the treatment they and their ancestors have received for generations.
The systemic racism found in our laws and society were put there by the white populations who have been running things for centuries, so of course when CRT examines the racial inequities.
White Democrats and white Republicans receive the same preferential treatment in society but both receive grief for their actions if they are active bigots or pushing bigoted ideologies that discriminate against other marginalized segments of society like the lgtbq community or women wanting equal pay for equal work.

Using an Eastwood line from a movie to somehow try to connect it to CRT is a real stretch at best. CRT does not teach a white kid to be ashamed of their race at all. Take a good, hard look at the Great Society programs of the 60s. The claimed democratic intent was to eliminate poverty, but the exact opposite happened. Welfare programs were designed to take the male out of the family. Women were told they can receive government assistance and housing, but to do so, there cannot be a male living with them.
That is why today you have government run housing with mostly single mothers. Many black children look at their grand mothers as their mothers, as their real mothers decided on a life of drugs or prostitution. Many Black fathers are inmates in your local prison .
Take a good look at most black families. Most do not have males involved. Drugs are rampant in the black communities. There are white families the same, but to compare, over 70 percent of black mothers are single parent, when white mothers are about 30. Blacks are 13 percent of the population, whites are about 65 percent.
All this is thanks to democratic policies implemented to purposely tear apart the black family, in hopes that those policies will one day eradicate them.
Systemic racism does not exist, therefore, there is no problem except what is the left is trying to do to poison the minds of kids and cause further division among whites and blacks.

There are just some things (in discussion) that rise above basic denial!
I think the justice system should be reformed to where the judge and jury never get to see the defendant or even know the name of the defendant. Their race, age (after they turn 18 they should just be referred to as "adult defendant") gender, none of it should have any bearing in a trial. They should just present the evidence referring to defendant A being accused of such and such crime, weigh the evidence without knowing what race or even gender and apply the law fairly. I believe that would fix a lot of the inequities in the justice system, though minorities would still be pulled over and searched more often than whites even though white people do and sell drugs at the same or higher rates than minorities. But at least the inequities in sentence length, bail amounts, parole eligibility and more that happen once they are accused of a crime would be more fair.
Obviously white people who rarely get pulled over because they don't fit some "profile" in a police officers mind don't know that they didn't get stopped and searched for no other reason than their skin color. They don't know they weren't followed around by store security watching their every move. They don't know they might not have been approved for a loan or weren't denied as a tenant when applying for a place to live because of their skin color. They are oblivious to white privilege because they've never had to deal with discrimination so they often don't know how good they actually have it.

Apples and oranges. Discussing those figures, their views, actions, and motivations is perfectly fine. I have no problem with that in the slightest. Erecting monuments or flying their battle flag is another matter entirely. I don’t think it is appropriate for the US to be honoring those who sought to tear the country apart in order to preserve and expand slavery.
