President walks bullied girl with Down’s syndrome to school
The President of North Macedonia walked a girl with Down’s syndrome to school this week after hearing she was being bullied.
Stevo Pendarovski visited Embla Adema and her family on Monday in Gostivar, about 65 kilometres south-west of the capital Skopje.
Together they talked about the challenges 11-year-old Embla and her family face every day. He then walked Embla to school.
“The president stressed that the behaviour of those who in any way endanger the rights of children is unacceptable, especially when it comes to children with atypical development,” a statement from the president’s office said .
“They should not only enjoy the rights they deserve, but also feel equal and welcome at the school desks and schoolyards. It is our obligation, as a state, but also as individuals, and the key element in this common mission is empathy,” it added.
“We are all equal in this society,” Pendarovski said. “I came to give my support and to raise awareness that inclusion is a basic principle.”
The statement added that the president welcomed the decision by the country’s ombudsman and Commission for Protection against Discrimination to open a probe into Embla’s case.
Now THERE is a President a nation can respect.
Kudos Prez.
Good article Buzz. Thank you for posting it.
Unfortunately it only had two comments and one vote up since the membership here isn't interested in something GOOD that a President does.
I've been spending more time on "select accounts" on Twitter lately.
I'm quite happy to have no access to Twitter or Facebook, and have no idea what "select accounts" are.
Same here Buzz...
Only have face book and put nothing on it...
Far as I am concerned less is best...
Poor choice of words on my part-- that's not a Facebook or Twitter term.
Rather I meant to imply that while both of them are full of trolling and nasty personal attacks, I have discovered that there's some really good content there. In fact a few brilliant people are constantly posting and discussing things on Twitter. So I am very selective as to whose Twitter feed I read (or even look at!)
You can read the posts without joining the site (well, some people only allow ther freinds to see what's they post).
One of the main differences from NT is that here , while you can put trolls on "ignore"-- they can still post on your discussions. IMO a few of the worst offenders here should've been permanently banned from NT, but are still here, lowering the quality of the site. (Although I have my opinions, I never argue with site owners ..or even moderators...about their actions.).
However on Twitter, someone can actually totally block someone from posting on their feed. (As a result there are some excellent discussions-- completely free of trolls, MAGA-cultists, etc).
Just saw the article, hope President Pendarovski's action helped the girl
I wouldn't read to much into this, it's a good PR move nothing more
What would YOU have done?
Hey Buzz long time no talk, I hope you are well.
Lol in reality I'd have done nothing as I'm thousands of kms away from North Macedonia with no intention of visiting, however even if I was there I don't speak the language or have any influence or power I'd still have done nothing as running up and grabbing some little girls hand would likely have gotten me arrested and beaten (not necessarily in that order)
Were I the North Macedonian president I'd have done the exact same thing this one did, as a politician you don't turn down an opportunity to get some good heart string tugging PR. That sort of stuff is political gold
Good to hear from you as well, Freefaller, and I trust that you're weathering the health storms. I didn't mean for you to go to North Macedonia, but rather if the situation were to happen where you are. Suppose you had a kid in her class who came home and told you that there is a little girl in their class who acts strange sometimes. And if you determined that little girl had Down's Syndrome, what you say to your kid?
Hmm now that I know where the goalposts are I'd like to think that I'd contact the little girls parents find out what's what and from there if necessary have a discussion with my kid. However I was never confronted with that situation so cannot say for sure how I would have reacted
Where did you develop your psychic skills-- how do you know what's going on inside his head (and heart!)
???
Psychic abilities are bunk, there's no such thing
Because he's a politician and that's how they view opportunities such as this
And your measure of politicians is America, right? Some might be more sensitive and empathetic of people with disabilities than others. For example, I would have considered FDR to be a lot more sensitive and empathetic than this man....
Nope all politicians everywhere throughout all time. Trump, FDR, PET, Xi, Pol Pot, Churchill, Hitler, Caesar Augustus, Ramses I etc all politicians and all lying self serving scum (imo)
Well, there's always HOPE that one day....
Lol hope is a good thing
Yes, Andrew "Andy" Dufresne thought so too. “Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies.”
It reminds me of another good PR move-- another young girl (Ruby Bridges) who had to be escorted to and from school for her own protection.
(She also had problems).
Anyone recognize the subject?
Hint: The men accompanying her weren't politicians, and they weren't school teachers-- they are three of the four U.S. Marshalls accompanying her to school and back.
More
Apples to oranges
Dragon Fruit to Cherimoya!
Had to look that up, thanks
It is much more. The little girl has gained confidence and self esteem.
Paula my comment was only reference to the politician not the girl
I think that what Paula is saying is that not all politicians would have done a kind thing for a child, no matter how nefarious they might be, and even if it were for political points, it still had a beneficial effect on the girl.
Likely true, however nothing in my statement says all would do this just that any who do are doing so for PR reasons
I realize that. Just pointing out a plus to the entire thing.
Morning..rather a sad reflection on the human race this sort of crap still goes on in this day and age...
Respect and compassion costs nothing and no amount of advertising on tv and $$$ thrown at these situations seems to change it..
Would like to know what sort of parents and home lives these kids who pick on others come from... the parents may have a lot to answer too....
In a more thorough article I read that because she caused some disturbances in class her classmates told their parents (most likely with some exaggeration) and instead of compassion and empathy the parents were furious and demanded she be separated from their kids, so she and her desk were moved into the hall with a small heater. It would have been a great lifetime lesson for the classmates to learn to help her rather than bully her.
