Ukrainian officials have been posting dozens of videos and photos online parading captured bloodied Russian soldiers, including some fighters who claimed they didn’t know they were being sent to invade.

Footage posted on the  Ukrainian Security Service’s Facebook  page over the weekend showed several Russian soldiers insisting they thought they were only taking part in military exercises before they were forced over their country’s border into Ukraine last week.

Other videos included several of the Russians calling their relatives to inform them they had been detained.

A number of the captured Russian soldiers were injured, including some filmed lying in hospital beds as they spoke.

One of those videos showed an injured commander of a sniper unit who identified himself as Leonid Paktishev,  the Guardian  reported.

Paktishev’s shocked relatives told the outlet they didn’t even know he was fighting in Ukraine until they saw the footage of him.

“I was sent the video of my brother captured at 2 a.m. last night,” said his sister, Yelena Polivtseva. “I was completely shocked. I had no idea that he was fighting in there.

“I knew Leonid was in the military, but I had no idea that he was sent to Ukraine,” she said. “I don’t think he would have been aware of it, either.”

Ukraine has been pushing relatives of the captured Russian soldiers to reach out to them and voice opposition to the war.

Moscow on Monday  refused to disclose how many Russian soldiers had been killed  — or captured — since President Vladimir Putin gave the orders to invade Ukraine.

Yes.

I've been reading several articles about this. And one of the things I've seen in many of these cases is that, first of all-- many of them said they were lied to-- they weren't told they were being sent off to murder Ukrainians, but rather that this was merely a routine "training exercise". And not only were they lied to-- but many were surprised by the ferocity of the (supposedly 'inferior") Ukrainians! So they feared for their lives.

And a number of captured Russian soldiers were injured:

I've heard some things about that as well. I have to wonder if the stalled advance isn't just supply problems but also the dissatisfaction of the troops with what they are doing. Sort of sounds like the lower ranks, and maybe even the mid ranks, didn't know this would happen, either.

I don't know for sure.

But from everything I've seen, its seems there are several reasons why this is happening.

One of the major ones seems to be that many of these soldiers were lied to-- they were told they were merely going on a "routine training exercise"..and then they found that Putin had ordered them into a dangerous combat zone instead. In addition, not only were they in a combat in a foreign country-- but their opponents (the Ukrainians) were often highly motivated and highly effective fighters as well. So they feared for their lives!!!

They are also pissed off about not being fed

or running out of petrol as they advanced in vehicles

that were desperately old and not fit for combat

Shameful video of one group looting a grocery store of all the food they could carry.

Another video of Russians robbing ATMs and carrying a small safe out of a bank.

Apparently The Russian military sent in their least effect troops first.

Yes, Cannon fodder.

From everything I've seen, the first soldiers they sent in, those leading the invasion, were either very old-- or extremely young and inexperienced.

Well, many people had us believing that Putin was some sort of genius, and praised him highly. (Not the least of which was the former President and Liar-in-chief, Putin's BFF Donald Trump).

So, basically, rather than a quick victory and Putin and his worshoppers would have us believe-- Putin miscalculated.

In fact, not only came the surprise that Russian forces generally performed poorly (despite their superior numbers and both the superior quantity and quality of arms)-- but there was another, "unintended consequence" of Putin's poor judgement.

For some time there were efforts of the two "very stabile geniuses" to weaken NATO. And they succeeded to some degree. But now the effetc of all this is that NATO has been strengthened significantly!

One of the main reasons Putin started this war was his fear that Ukraine might join NATO.

But so far the only sentiments re: desire to join NATO that resulted from this war has been that apparently both Finland as well as Sweden are considering joining NATO.

(One news source described Putin's actions as "showing  bad judgement"-- if anything that's quite an understatement!)

have not seen anything about is Spain and Portugal.

From NATO Allies send more ships, jets to enhance deterrence and defence in eastern Europe

In the past days, a number of Allies have made announcements regarding current or upcoming deployments. Denmark is sending a frigate to the Baltic Sea and is set to deploy four F-16 fighter jets to Lithuania in support of NATO’s long-standing air-policing mission in the region. Spain is sending ships to join NATO naval forces and is considering sending fighter jets to Bulgaria. France has expressed its readiness to send troops to Romania under NATO command. The Netherlands is sending two F-35 fighter aircraft to Bulgaria from April to support NATO’s air-policing activities in the region, and is putting a ship and land-based units on standby for NATO’s Response Force. The United States has also made clear that it is considering increasing its military presence in the eastern part of the Alliance.

From Portugal, Romania to send military equipment to Ukraine

Lisbon is to dispatch "vests, helmets, night-vision goggles, grenades and ammunition of various calibers," the ministry said in a statement in the early hours on Twitter.

"Portugal supports Ukraine, which is defending itself against an unjustified, illegal and unacceptable invasion," Defense Minister Joao Cravinho said in another tweet.

Foreign Minister Augusto Santos Silva on Saturday told CNN Portugal that Lisbon was "totally open" to welcoming "thousands of Ukrainians" forced to flee their country.

So far, it's a United NATO, EVERYONE is chipping in something...

I've also heard on CBS radio today that almost all the international sports organizations and federations, (including FIFA) have booted, suspended or banned Russian participation, just waiting on two more, the international tennis federations and the international Ice Hockey League...

Um, apparently, I misspoke, sort of. It seems both Sweden and Switzerland are doing unprecedented things but the article I found seems a little vague on exact details.

'A new Europe' united against Russia — even neutral Switzerland (nbcnews.com)

Sweden, which is not part of NATO and has maintained a policy of neutrality through both World Wars and the Cold War, announced Monday it will send 5,000 anti-tank weapons to Ukraine.

The Swedish government said it is the first time the Scandinavian country has sent arms to a country at war since 1939, when it aided its neighbor Finland against a Soviet invasion.

Even Switzerland joined the fray.

Neutrality has been a survival tactic for Switzerland that kept the alpine nation independent since Napoleon. It is not part of the European Union nor NATO.

But bowing to public pressure from its citizens and every party in its parliament but the far-right, the Swiss government announced Monday it will join the EU’s sanction against Russia, bar entry to some high-level Russians with Swiss connections and close Swiss airspace to Russian flights.

The move is significant not only symbolically, but because Switzerland’s infamously secretive banks are a favorite of Russian oligarchs.

I'm not sure this specifically confirms Maddow's claims but it's what I found.

Found this, too. Switzerland adopts wholesale EU sanctions against Russia | Switzerland | The Guardian

Yeah, was thinking about that as well. Not sure about how to feel about it being done now. If the Russian troops had been lied to, though, I'm not sure I'd be against them telling their story. Problem is, how does anyone know whether they weren't coerced to say these things? I personally don't think they were because of reporting in Russia about the family members of these soldiers being completely taken by surprise and that the government isn't telling them anything. In the end, I don't know if this is a good thing or a bad one.

Also it may be significant to you that while officially Moscow is still a signatory to the GC protocols.

Thanks for proving my point.  You can lay off all performative hand waiving and just admit I'm correct.

A typo.

Given your apparent obsession with litigation,  I suggest you sue him for explaining the Geneva Convention.

He’s covering his ass in case this shit goes sideways for him and he ends up on trial for war crimes. “But we never declared war.” Yeah, right.

You really think Putin will be alive to face war crimes?

First Russia would have to lose; and I don't mean just lose- but lose in such a way that the US and NATO were literally knocking at his front doorstep militarily. We will all be glowing in the dark forever before that happens.

Second, he will be dead long before that by one of his inner circle. That is the real person everyone needs to watch out for- the person that can rest control of Russia from Putin.

Our great allies the Ukrainians violating the Geneva convention? That can't be! They would never do such a thing./S

I am sure every Putin will make sure that every last Russian soldier sees this to show how they will be treated should they be captured.

Among the complaints are that Iraq humiliated prisoners of war by allowing their questioning to be broadcast and that its forces used the white flag of surrender to lure American soldiers into ambushes.

Legal experts said the complaints were grounded in well-established international law. The fact that Iraq was attacked, the experts continued, does not alter its legal obligations.

''Who is right and who is wrong in a war, including who started it, does not matter,'' Ruth Wedgwood, a professor of international law at the Johns Hopkins University, said in a telephone interview from Geneva. ''Even if you think the war is illegal, the rules of war still apply.''

Doubt we will see any calls for the Ukrainians doing this to be sentenced in the Hague. I will give whomever is in charge of the Ukrainian PR campaign full credit, they have most of the world bent over for the Ukrainians.

Up until recently I've been totally amazed at how well the Ukrainians have been doing!

But sadly, as of yesterday and today, IMO things are starting to look pretty grim.

Russia had only used part of their potential firepower.. and the poorly armed & tiny numbers  (by comparison) defenders of Ukraine have put up some very successful resistance.

But now the Russians  are sending in a huge amount of weapons and soldiers, and have been quickly escalating attacks on Ukrainian fighters...and have started to ramp up their numerous war crimes against Ukrainian civilians.

Its not pleasant to face the facts, but IMO we are going to see a bloodbath very shortly...many innocent Ukrainian civilians will be dying shortly jrSmiley_5_smiley_image.png
